MARLIN: We are so pleased that fishing has stayed on track and continues to improve after a season of scarcity during the last few months. Even with a big moon the fish were not deterred and gave a good showing all week. To give you an idea of how great it’s been let’s look at the aptly named Brett and Melissa Fisher from Texas; they managed to hook, fight and release SIX striped marlin, ranging in size from 100 to 160 LBS aboard Tracy Ann at the 11.50 spot. Hot Rod had a hot day on May 16th, when they released five striped marlin up to 160 LBS as well as landing a tasty wahoo for the table with a group from Washington D.C. aboard headed up by Richard Battaglia. A couple of days later they again were able to catch five marlin with Wes and Susan Sellew on board. Another boat that did well was Bill Collector with four marlin released, also at the 11.50 spot for the McLaurin and Smith families from Livingston, Texas. Not to be left out were the Rebecca and Ruthless each with four marlin apiece released on May 20th. Other boats released between one and three marlin with those not catching generally people that got seasick and who wanted to come back early. Live bait was absolutely the way to go and the best location was the 11.50 spot on the Cortez side. Marlin was the top catch this week, with seventy percent of our boats catching, giving us a total of 109 fish of which 107 were released – several fish tagged.

OTHER SPECIES: We continue to see a variety of sharks being caught in the same area as the marlin all of them are being released. Andrea a 28 ft Uniflite released two thresher sharks up to 100 LBS, a 70 LB pilot shark and also released a striped marlin for Glen McLaughlin and Sara Madsen. The varieties of shark caught this week were pilot, hammerhead, thresher, mako and lemon and twenty percent of our charters hooked them. Dorado catches were a little better this week at thirteen percent and this should increase as we approach summer. Bill Collector caught five small dorado, two small tuna and released a pilot shark and a striped marlin for Art Muff and Nicole Scarduzio. Tuna catches were slow with just a few fish caught around the 10 LB mark. Inshore the fishing has slowed down somewhat with the pangas being hit or miss, nevertheless twenty percent of the boats caught a trigger fish, skipjacks, grouper, sierra, jack crevalle and small roosters. Mid week there was a flurry of wahoo activity for boats fishing a bit closer to Cabo with some fish up to 60 LBS. George from Cleveland out on the panga Tres Amigos caught a 40 LB wahoo, two tuna and thee jack crevalles.

LOCATION: 11.50 for marlin and shark, Cabeza de Ballena and Lighthouse for smaller game. Difficult to fish the Pacific as the wind blew hard all week.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, windy on Pacific, seas calm to moderate.

AVERAGE WATER TEMPERATURE: 78-80 F

BEST LURES: Live caballito, rapalas & cuchis.
MARLIN: We are sooooo happy to finally have some stable striped marlin catches and in fact they were our top catch this week. Pisces Rebecca lead the way with four marlin up to 140 LBS and a pilot shark released on May 7th for Michael Francesconi and party from Georgia at the 11.50 spot. Michael’s friends were out on Tracy Ann the same day and managed to release three marlin in the same area. It’s easy to see why Rebecca is one of our top boats, as they again released four marlin up to 170 LBS on May 9th for anglers Charlie Piermarini, Jack Piermarini and Bob James – all on live bait at the 11.50 spot. Tracy Ann had another triple header day on May 11th for Jason and Christy White from Colorado, once again the 11.50 spot was the place and caballito the bait. Back to the 31 ft. Bertram Rebecca they had an amazing day for Trey Simon, Kristi Istre Ricky & Angie Chavez from Texas, with three striped marlin up to 160 LBS and FIVE pilot sharks up to 120 LBS, all released – thank you. The Engel families, fellow Texans, were out on Valerie the same day and were pleased to release three marlin up to 140 LBS. Fifty two percent of our charters caught marlin this week with many have more than one fish, giving us a total catch of 54 fish, with all but two released. Our overall catch rate was 80% for all species, though we noted that those anglers that opted for a half day had significantly lower catch rates – moral of the story; take a full day.

OTHER SPECIES: So plentiful are sharks right now that they almost need a dedicated section, of course the shark ban is in place until July 31st, but that doesn’t stop you from catching and releasing them. This week we had pilot sharks – local name but probably silky or bronze whalers, a blue shark and threshers. Shambala our 60 FT Hatteras caught three thresher sharks up to 180 LBS as well as a pilot shark for Maarten Durent and friends from New Zealand. Overall thirty nine percent of our charters caught sharks with a total of 30 caught and released. It was nice to actually see some dorado this week, not many, but at least a start. Ruthless out on a half day managed to catch six up to 18 LBS eight miles out from the Lighthouse. Just five percent of charters found dorado. Tuna catches began to show this week as well with seven percent of boats managing to hook a few, most were school size fish, though Bill Collector was the exception with a 75 LB tuna caught by Art Muff from New Jersey, who was also very fortunate to release two striped marlin and a jack crevalle. There is still small stuff available in shore but with the big game catches vastly improved not many boats tried for these species unless they were on half days, as there wasn’t enough time on these shorter trips to get to the marlin grounds and back. Nine percent of our boats caught a mix of skipjacks, sheephead, triggerfish, lady fish and grouper.

LOCATION: 11.50 spot
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Sunny, seas moderate, still windy on the Pacific.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 78 F
BEST LURES: Live Caballito

Based on the catches of Pisces Sportfishing by Tracy Ehrenberg.Pisces Sportfishinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17098923473039230913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3981755221144853744.post-14998421661752316722016-05-09T09:26:00.000-06:002016-05-09T09:26:21.997-06:00Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report April 30th to May 6th, 2016Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 99%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 49%, Sharks 73%, Other 46%

BILLFISH: We’re back! Finally after months of small game fishing we saw a return this week to the big stuff. We were pleased to see more consistent billfish catches and even multiple marlin catches for some boats. At the start of the week the hot boat was the Hot Rod as they released three striped marlin up to 150 LBS and SIX pilot sharks up to 130 LBS all caught at the 11.50 spot by Kevin Bremer, James Snyder, Pamela Snyder, Jesse Jernigan & Sam Jernigan – a pretty busy days for these lucky anglers. Our 35 ft. Cabo Listo celebrated 5 de Mayo in style as they also released three striped marlin and released a large pilot shark for a group of Mexican anglers from Monterey, mainland Mexico. Another boat with more than one marlin was Pisces 31ft Bertram La Brisa; they released two striped marlin at the 11.50 spot for the Collins and Lancers from Maryland, who also did well to release an 180 LB pilot shark and a 110 LB thresher shark. Forty nine percent of our charters caught marlin this week, not fantastic, but definitely on the road to recovery with a total of 23 marlin released this week.

OTHER SPECIES: The killing of sharks’ ban that runs from May 1st to July 31st went into to effect this week and it’s like somebody told them they were safe as they showed up by the dozen. Anglers are allowed to catch and release them during this period but cannot kill them or bring a dead shark back to the dock. Pisces Tracy Ann released a total of SIX pilot sharks, a large 180 LB thresher shark and a striped marlin for 10 year old Bentley Willcott who was on a special birthday trip to Cabo with his dad Matthew from Texas. Henry & Kaitlin Troutner from Virginia had a great time battling three thresher sharks up to 180 LBS and a pilot shark, all caught on live caballito. Hot Rod made the fishing report a second time for having the most variety of sharks with a thresher, a pilot and mako shark, as well as a striped marlin released for the Sutton family from California. Seventy three percent of our charters caught sharks this week giving a total of 49 sharks released. Just a couple of boats caught dorado and tuna catches were on a par – all small fish. Small game catches continued throughout the week but to a lesser degree with forty six percent of boats catching grouper, ladyfish, triggerfish, babosas, sheephead, skipjacks, roosterfish and one solitary wahoo that was around 40 LBS.

LOCATION: Marlin and shark were caught in the Sea of Cortez between Santa Maria and the 11.50 spot. Smaller game were on the Pacific at Migrino.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy, windy on the Pacific, lighter winds on the Cortez side.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 76 F

BILLFISH: Marlin catches increased this week, but not by much. Almost all marlin caught this week were caught this Friday, April 29th, and all out at the 11:50 Spot. Almost every boat that headed out that way caught at least one marlin, with the Ruthless and Hot Rod catching 3 each. David Sandoval and friends from Austin, Texas, the anglers aboard the Ruthless, also landed two Pilot sharks that averaged around 120lbs, which they released along with their marlins.

Keith Johnson from Georgia had a busy day out on the Bill Collector on Wednesday. The crew headed out to Punta Gorda and hit the jackpot, catching 1 small striped marlin, 1 pilot shark, 7 skipjacks and 1 amberjack. All fish were caught on caballito bait. The Knot Workin was also one of the lucky few to not only catch the marlin they were looking for, but also land the only yellowfin tuna caught this week. They caught the 25 lb. tuna along with a small grouper a few miles out from Las Viudas. Pisces boats caught a total of 20 striped marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES: Shark and small game fish have remained the majority caught this week once again. The Howards and Mr. Dailey, anglers from Washington who fished aboard the Andrea got their daily work out with their catch, a total of 37 fish, mostly triggerfish and ladyfish, as well as a small grouper. All their catches were found out of Migriño, on caballito and ballyhoo bait.
Another busy day was for the Ruthless on Monday, with anglers Michael and Jill Steinbacher reeling in 12 triggerfish, 8 groupers and 5 ladyfish, also out of Migriño.

The panga 3 Amigos decided to stay close to shore and found themselves catching 2 sierras, 1 roosterfish and 1 jack crevelle, all out from the Old Lighthouse.

We have also been hearing about rising tuna and wahoo bite out from Medanos in San Jose. Fisherman from over that way have been starting to see and catch wahoo and see schools of tuna, so we are hoping to see more catches of both of these next week. For now, only two wahoo were caught this week, one aboard the Rebecca, caught on green/black lure at Medanos and the other caught aboard the Flora T on caballito bait, both weighed around 20-25 lbs.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Mostly clear skies, with seas a little choppy and wind coming up in the afternoons.
LOCATION: Migriño, 11:50 spot, Destiladeras, Cerro Colorado, Las Margaritas, Medano, Old Lighthouse.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 76 F
BEST LURES: Caballito, ballyhoo, jurelito, green/black.

BILLFISH: This week was another slow one for marlin with a gorgeous full moon not helping either. Pisces Rebecca was one of the few boats that had a good day on April 19th off of Punta Gorda. Jon Svendsen and Jean Hubler, repeat Pisces anglers, did very well to release two striped marlin, one a baby 60 lb’er and its bigger brother at 130 LBS with ballyhoo and a blue and white lure doing the trick. The day before this, Rebecca was again one of the few boats to find marlin, on this occasion at Medano Blanco, a nice fish over 180 LBS that took a live caballito. Not only did they catch this large striper they also caught a wahoo for the Feasler family from Michigan. Nobody could say that the crew on Tracy Ann doesn’t try; they headed out forty two miles with the Desmarais family from Connecticut on board and were rewarded with the release of a striped marlin. They were also kind enough to fish out a 30 LB turtle that was wrapped in a plastic bag and return it alive and well to the water. Pisces Valerie had an active day for Dennis and Tracy Bohrer from Wisconsin; first off they caught a 130 LB striped marlin at Los Arcos, and then had fun at Migrino catching nine triggerfish, three ladyfish and three mulejinos. Several other boats did see marlin and even hooked them, but getting them to the boat was another question. Pisces anglers caught a total of fifteen striped marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES: Just a few yellowfin tuna were caught this week and were not anything to write home about at 5 to 10 LBS. A couple of sharks were caught this week, one was a 60 LB pilot shark aboard Valerie and a 150 LB hammerhead shark was released from the panga Poseidon by French angler Luc Trasleglise. We remind anglers that a ban on catching sharks will go into effect on May 1st; all sharks have to be released between May and July. More than half of the boats caught good quantities of smaller game this week. The most numerous fish to be caught were ladyfish, followed by grouper, triggerfish, babosas, mujelinos, then sheephead, skipjacks, amberjack and red snapper.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, seas a little choppy with wind coming up in the afternoons.
LOCATION: Migrino, Margaritas, Los Arcos, Punta Gorda, Medano Blanco, Destiladeras, Pozo de Cota, 11.50.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 76 F
BEST LURES: Caballito, white/blue, ballyhoo, jurelito, green/white.

Based on the catches of Pisces Sportfishing by Tracy Ehrenberg.Pisces Sportfishinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17098923473039230913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3981755221144853744.post-56211967152768780372016-04-18T12:02:00.000-06:002016-04-18T12:02:30.565-06:00Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report April 9th to 15th 2016
BILLFISH: Marlin numbers were up slightly from last week, but are still nowhere as good as we would like them to be. We checked last years’ fish report and saw that it was pretty much the same as this year. The weather is still pretty cold for this time of year and it has been rather windy on the Pacific side, which could be a contributing factor. Captain Orlando out on his 28 ft. Andrea started out the week well, as he heading to the 11.50 spot and Punta Gorda with Andres Villafante and friends from Mexico on board; they were very fortunate to release two striped marlin, one a baby at 40 LBS and the other perhaps it’s daddy at 140 LBS. They also caught and released a 90 LB pilot shark on live caballito. This same day Bill Collector had an action packed day, fishing a little further up in the Sea of Cortez at Destiladeras with our very own Melissa Espino and friends on board. They were able to release a striped marlin, hammerhead shark snapper and couple of triggerfish. We were surprised to see a couple of early season sailfish, but then again water is warmer than normal. Adam Padgett released a nice 75 LB sailfish twenty five mile out from San Jose aboard Pisces Listo. On April 11th the crew of the Tracy Ann were able to show off their marlin skills and were able to release a couple of striped marlin that were estimated at 130 & 160 LBS at the 11.50 spot from New Jersey anglers the Moore family. Another boat that had a two marlin day was Andrea for David Mays, who got both of his fish also at the 11.50 spot on live bait. There were plenty of boats that spotted marlin but just could not get a hook up. Pisces anglers caught a total of 19 billfish this week; all but one released.

OTHER SPECIES: Where the marlin lacked, the smaller game took up the slack with multiple catches possible of a variety of fish in a day. Let’s take the Andrea with the Zelms from Arizona aboard: they released a large 220 LB hammerhead shark, and caught a sheephead, 6 ladyfish, 2 grouper, 3 triggerfish and 2 pintos. Or Tracy Ann fishing at Migrino on the Pacific for the Murray party; they caught 12 grouper, 10 babosas, 2 sheephead, 6 red snapper, 1 ladyfish, 2 mulejinos and 1 sea bass in other words a total of 35 fish on a day trip. One of the most enviable catches was aboard Hot Rod who caught two wahoo for John Pritchard. There were some tuna catches this week but the fish tended to be small at no more than 15 LBS and catches of up to eight fish, usually at San Jaime. A couple of small dorado were also caught. To summarize plentiful catches of grouper, triggerfish, ladyfish, some snappers, sierra, skipjacks, yellowtail and sharks.

WEATHER: Partly overcast, windy, seas average.
LOCATION: Punta Gorda and 11.50 for marlin, lighthouse to Migrino for smaller game.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 74 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, petrolero.

BILLFISH: Marlin have been conspicuously absent from Cabo the past couple of months with just a few caught each week and though many more were sighted, getting them on a hook was a real challenge. Nevertheless towards the end of this report we began to see more of them and more anglers were rewarded with hooks ups and some even had multiple marlin days. It looks like things are about to change! Pisces Bill Collector had an outstanding day for Todd Huerkamp and Laney Dobbs from Texas, fishing of Punta Gorda, where they manage to release THREE striped marlin on live bait, in the 100 to 130 LB class. Yahoo had given up on the day and was heading back in when they were able to hook two striped marlin just three miles off of Lands’ End for Scott and Jim from Chicago. Andrea was the only other boat to have more than one marlin in a day, with a double header for Dane & Blake Wilson from Montana. Our boats caught a total of twenty six marlin this week, with many others spotted but not tempted. However, Pisces anglers caught plenty of fish this report easily adding up to over 1,000 fish, between all the different smaller species. In a way it’s been good that the marlin have been slow, as captains have been forced to try new techniques and fish for other species, developing skills that may have rusted a bit when the marlin is so plentiful. Some of the best catches were the mixed bag days that was perfect for families fishing over Easter as everybody on board got to catch something. A group visiting from New Jersey, fishing aboard Bill Collector and managed to release a striped marlin as well as a 150 LB pilot shark for the group headed up by Don Michael. Lake Schiefelbein and family had a great time on Ruthless released a striped marlin at Migrino then caught eight groupers, six ladyfish and a yellow tail. The Staver family from Chicago must have been tired after their outing on Valerie with a 160 LB striped marlin released as well as twenty one triggerfish, two groupers and a roosterfish to boot.

OTHER SPECIES: Eighty percent of our charters caught small game fish this week, though a few boats did get “skunked”, mainly those that opted for a half day. Those that took the full day had a bonanza on triggerfish – fun on ultra-light tackle- roosterfish, snappers, lady fish, Barbosas (slimeys), jack crevalle, sheephead, skipjacks, jack crevalle, sierra and various types and sizes of grouper. One of our pangas released a 150 LB hammerhead shark for Tom Kledzinski from Chicago, who also caught three skipjacks. Twenty eight foot Andrea had a busy day with anglers from Reno, Nevada on board, with a pilot shark released, fifteen ladyfish, three babosas and a grouper. Pisces Tiburon (which means shark) aptly released a large hammerhead shark for Mark Shmiedl from Ohio as well as good numbers of trigger and lady fish. The Saline’s and Bienkowskis from California fished together on Andrea and released a 100 LB thresher shark, eleven ladyfish, a grouper, yellowtail, ten triggerfish and two babosas. Tracy Ann had a nice day catching eight groupers, two of the unusual and beautiful sheephead, plus trigger and ladyfish. Yellowfin tuna catches were slow with just five percent of boats finding this species. Bill Collector was able to catch fourteen up to 25 LBs at San Jaime for Sam Sheriden and friends from Canada. The Richter party from Fayetteville, North Carolina were out with the crew on Knot Workin’ who are tuna aficionados – they got the anglers into the tuna and managed to land eight up to 40 LBS. Pisces Adriana caught a really nice 56 LB grouper for the Stephenson’s from Colorado who also caught another grouper, two sheephead, three red snapper, eight ladyfish and a couple of triggerfish.

WEATHER: Quite windy and overcast some days on Pacific, now clear and flat. Calmer seas on the Cortez.
LOCATION: Pacific for smaller game and tuna, Migrino, Margaritas, San Jaime, marlin starting to show up on Cortez side between Santa Maria and Punta Gorda.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F
BEST LURES: live caballito, ballyhoo, bait chunks, cedar plugs.
BILLFISH: We have had slow fishing for marlin and as we approach the March “doldrums”, they are certainly living up to their name. A big moon did not help either, but that said the marlin were hard to locate anyhow. Nevertheless our crews came through for some anglers that were in the right place at the right time with a hungry fish in vicinity. First striped marlin of the week was aboard Pisces Valerie Mike McCoy & Dickson Ganstra from Iowa. They were fishing in front of Margaritas on the Pacific and hooked a small 70 LB striped marlin which they released, followed by a 25 LB dorado which they kept. To keep the anglers busy the crew set them up on light tackle & they spent the afternoon reeling triggerfish to the boat; the majority released. Utah anglers Michael & Sandy Kelly, along with friends, were some of the lucky anglers to catch a marlin this week too; out on Pisces La Brisa on February 23rd, theirs was a huge striped marlin, estimated at 200 LBS, but thankfully released - they also got one yellowfin and eight skipjacks fishing at Los Arcos. Adriana released a striped marlin for the Chilivetis family from Texas, which was estimated at 120 LBS as did Bill Collector, though theirs was a little larger at around 140 LBS. Last marlin for us of the week was aboard C Rod, caught off of the Old Lighthouse with an approximate weight of 120 LBS, also released; angler was James Resendez from Texas. Just 5 marlin for us this week, but thankfully all were released. Smaller game took up the slack on most days and Pisces boats achieved an overall catch rate of 70% for all species combined, dominating the marina when most other fleets came back “skunked”. Our boys worked harder and went further.

OTHER SPECIES: Yellowfin tuna were our saving grace this week with thirty percent of our charters catching fish in the 10 to 20 LB class, though some boats found fish up to 40 LBS. Thomas & Brenda Reed from Louisiana headed out 30 miles aboard Pisces Andrea but were glad they did when they ended up catching twenty two tuna. La Brisa had a good tuna day on February 24th, for Jeffery Pries and party from Michigan with seventeen tuna in the area. Tuna champs of the week were a group of anglers headed up by Rory Anderson from Utah, with thirty tuna caught 25 miles from the Herradura. We never thought we would see a week where triggerfish were the top catch but it happened; we had almost 200 this week- not exactly big game, but fun if you gear down to light tackle. Small game accounted for the majority of our catches this week, dominated by the triggerfish but also with lesser numbers of skipjack, roosterfish, ladyfish, grouper, yellowtail, snapper, sierra and pompano.
BILLFISH: We had anglers strictly interested in targeting the Striped Marlin this week, did not care the tuna season is good! Some of them were successful in reeling such a magnificent fish, other anglers unfortunately were not that lucky, however they tried and promised to return to Cabo and give a shot again! The fishing stills at least 30 miles out and more, over the Pacific Ocean. The Pisces “Andrea” 28ft boat released a Striped Marlin, weight estimated 110lbs. and six tunas for Tom Stein, Steve Magner, Phil Healey and Kevin Salts from Lafayette, Indiana. The other Pisces 28ft “Andrea” did its magic as well reeling in 120 lbs. Striped Marlin almost reaching Todos Santos town at Elias Calles, for William Chapel's group visiting from beautiful New Orleans, Louisiana. On February 08th “Ruthless” 31ft Pisces Bertram got tight lines with a Striped Marlin released and brought six tunas as well (18-20 lbs.) twenty five miles out of the Herradura for Brad Hall, Holly Meyer, Kevin Smets, Jane Riehl and Chinyere Abosi from Los Angeles, California. Marlin and two dorados in Punta Lobos for Cory Pardon, Lana Nogosek, Dan and Robin Sedevie visiting from cold Minot, in North Dakota for sure enjoying our mild winter. BILLFISH: Marlin catches were painfully slow this week, as the moon waxed beautiful, illuminating the night sky and giving the fish an opportunity to feed at night and not bother with the bait offered by fishermen in the daylight hours. In fact very few were spotted. Highlight of the week was when the King of Sweden, on an unofficial visit to meet with scientists and fishery experts, did extremely well to release a nice striped marlin and a mako shark from a panga, on what was a tough day. Pisces crews worked hard and did manage to find a few marlin for our anglers though with live bait, either caballito or mackerel doing the trick. Just one marlin was caught on a Petrolero lure (brown/gray/orange) aboard Pisces Valerie on January 23rd at Las Margaritas-Los Arcos for Mike Lenz, Bob Downport, Bill Muller and Will Rigsby visiting from Idaho. Pisces 31ft Bertram “Tiburon” released another Striped Marlin twenty six miles out from the Old Lighthouse for Sean Caroline´s group visiting from Savage, Minnesota. Anglers Jessica & Brian Cyphers from Folsom, California opted for a 25ft panga, Pichurro which was within their budget a good decision as they were able to catch a striped marlin at the Old Lighthouse. “Andrea” a 28ft Uniflite released a 110 lbs. Marlin just outside of the Golden Gate on the Pacific for Bud & Karen Cross from Fort Collins, Colorado and finally Pisces “Rebecca” 31ft Bertram released another one yesterday, the complete opposite direction off of San Jose del Cabo for Clayton, Robert Greathouse & James and Christopher Cornelius from Metairie, Louisiana. The outlook is for the marlin bite to increase as the moon gets smaller and we will probably start seeing fish show up on the Cortez side also. Pisces anglers released a total of five Striped Marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES: The main catch this week is the unstoppable yellow fin tuna being, happy anglers with fresh sashimi food! Football sizes from 10, 15, 20 and 25 lbs. and vessels going from twenty to thirty miles off over the Pacific side - long days on less than smooth seas. Pisces “Andrea” 28ft caught eight tunas and one Dorado for Michael and Leah Keller from Mandan, North Dakota. Pisces “Rebecca” 31ft brought twenty one tunas outside the Golden Gate for Dale, Tim, Matt & Brandon Quirk, Dean Newman, Charlie Hand visiting all from North Carolina. Pisces 31ft “Tracy Ann" caught thirty one tunas, released ten outside on Jaime bank. Pisces 35ft “Valerie” did great for Brian Nixon group our local friend and reeled twenty two tunas at the Golden as well. Pisces 31ft “La Brisa” on January 27th put reel action with ten tunas and a Dorado outside of Cerritos for Sean Miles, Scott Key, John Miller, Seth & Natalia Sanford and Reece Finlayson visiting from Miami, Florida and Australia. Bill Collector 32ft Pisces brought six tunas from 20 to 45 lbs. outside of La Herradura for Kari Lehtonen and Cody Eakin from Dallas, Texas and “Shambala” 60ft Pisces got thirty tunas outside of Punta Lobos for Frank Adler, Gary McArdell, Ken Gould, Travis Haining, Matt Kinley and Kevin Thomas from California. Pisces 31ft “Tiburon” got a 25 pounder dorado outside of the old light house for Darrel Kvasager, David & Mark Hoiland from Minnetonka, Minnesota. Seventy three percent of our charters brought yellow fin tunas and fourteen percent of our charters caught dorado, which consisted of 490 tunas and 9 dorados. Limits were kept on all fish with the remainder released.

BILLFISH: Marlin fishing
this week was not an easy thing, with a big moon and fussy eaters it was
hard to get a hook up. Fish were seen but both the marlin and bait
were hard to hook up. We heard reports of marlin activity before the
sun came up but once it was daylight their activity slowed down, giving
credence to the belief that when there is a big moon they feed at night
and are not hungry during the day. Nevertheless thirty seven percent of
our charters were able to find and fight striped marlin. We also heard
of a 400 LB blue marlin caught this week; an exception on a slow day. Pisces Rebecca
had one of the best catches of the week on January 18th, when they
released three striped marlin between 100 and 130 LBS between Pozo de
Cota and Margaritas for Justin Tidwell and friends from Arizona.
Equaling the Rebecca was latest edition to the fleet Hot Rod
who released three marlin up to 150 LBS a little further up the coast
at Golden Gate for Kirk Kindred and party from California. Other catches
were of one or two marlin per boat, when found, giving us a total of 31
striped marlin.

OTHER SPECIES:
What kept anglers busy this week, if the anglers didn’t mind a long
ride out offshore was the yellowfin tuna. Boats could load up on huge
numbers of small tuna with the occasional larger fish mixed in. Pisces Ruthless
for example caught forty eight tuna (many released) thirty miles out
from Land’s End for Scott Lindsey and friends from Illinois. Randy Wolf
and buddies from California had perhaps one of the best days of the
week aboard Pisces Valerie,
they released a striped marlin and then went on to muscle in forty two
forty two tuna on January 22nd at San Jaime. Others catches were of
five to twenty five fish, with plenty of double digit catches – our
total tuna catch was of 316 fish with forty three percent of charters
finding this species. Dorado catches continue to slow with just ten
boats finding one or two fish, which is normal for this time of year.
We had a nice size wahoo again this week, this time aboard Knot Workin
which weighed in at 62 LBS caught by Bradley Lukkasson from San
Francisco. Inshore the boats had varied catches with triggerfish by the
dozen, some ladyfish, skipjacks, yellowtail, sheep heads, grouper and
snappers.

BILLFISH: This week Cabo
enjoyed beautiful weather with sunny skies, cool nights and mostly calm
seas which produced some great catches for our anglers – nearly every
boat out caught fish this week. Pisces anglers enjoyed a successful day
fishing ninety five percent of the time this period. Catch of the week
was that of Ed Purcell from Milwaukee, Wisconsin – a lake angler who
had the thrill of his life when he hooked up an out of season black
marlin aboard Pisces Ruthless.
The fish took dead bait at San Jaime and took about forty minutes to
bring to the boat – weight was just under 300 LBS, well done Ed!
Striped marlin were the species anglers were most likely to encounter
this past week with steady catches of up to three fish between and 100
and 140 LBS. Pisces Ruthless
was having a good week not only did they get the black marlin, but they
also released three striped marlin at La Antena, two on live bait and
one on a petrolero lure for a group from California headed up by David
Moore. The Brown family from Austin, Texas fished a little further at
Golden Gate, aboard Pisces Andrea and were also able to release three marlin and boat a dorado. Tracy Ann
always seems to make the fish report and this week is no exception;
they had a triple marlin day on January 15th for David Bales and friends
from San Diego also fishing at Golden Gate on the Pacific. The Gibsons
from Texas had a fabulous day aboard Pisces Valerie
with three striped marlin ranging in size from 80 to 140 LBS off of Las
Margaritas. Pisces anglers caught a total of 70 striped marlin and 1
black marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES: Although
dorado was pretty steady this week, we can see that they are starting to
wind down. Catches were seldom of more than one to three fish with
weights up to 20 LBS. Twenty four percent of our boats caught dorado
for a total catch of 28 fish. Yellow fin tuna catches were on the slow
side and you had to go to San Jaime to find them – Pisces Bill Collector
had one of the best days when they caught a dozen for the Haith family
from Boise, Idaho – the fish were football size and took cedar plugs and
feathers. Other catches were of between one and ten fish. Just a
couple of small wahoo were caught this week. Sharks seem to be moving
back into the area – we had the first pilot shark that we have seen in
weeks. Inshore we are starting to get some small mako sharks. Pangas
are starting to see great inshore action with multiple catches of
ladyfish, skipjacks, small snappers and groupers.

LOCATION: Pacific, lighthouse to Golden Gate.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, mostly calm seas.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 75 F
Based on the catches of Pisces Sportfishing by Tracy Ehrenberg.
Pisces Sportfishinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17098923473039230913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3981755221144853744.post-70657698452797993842016-01-11T08:31:00.000-07:002016-01-11T08:31:42.572-07:00Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report January 2 - 8, 2016

Weather seems to be back on track and we have been experiencing cool evenings and brisk early mornings which the fish seem to like. The marlin bite is not in super strong swing but is totally acceptable with sixty five percent of the boats catching between one and three striped marlin in a day, with the odd sailfish here and there along with some late season blue marlin. Water temperature is still a little warmer than normal - it should be 70 F but is right around 74 F, which may explain why we haven’t seen the mass migration from further north that usually takes place around this time. On January 2nd, Pisces Tracy Ann released three striped marlin, all on the small side, just before San Jaime, for good friend Rick Walsh, who also boated a small tuna. This same day, new addition to the fleet Hot Rod released two striped marlin and caught two dorado and a wahoo; a very satisfactory day for a group of Tennessee anglers. Next day out 28 ft. Andrea fished a different area between one and seven miles off of Land’s End and managed to catch three striped marlin, bigger at 120 to 140 LBS for Isaac and May visiting from Denver. Another boat with a triple marlin day was La Brisa with the Levine family from Austin on board. Their marlin ranged from 100 to 140 LBS and were caught on live caballito at Pozo de Cota on the Pacific side – the two dorado they landed took lures. This same boat repeated their success with three marlin on January 8th for Matt and Hunter Robinson from Texas as they fished at Los Arcos. The fish released were from 80 to 140 LBS and all took live bait. Pisces anglers caught a total of 77 billfish this week, consisting of 74 striped marlin and 3 sailfish. Marlin was the top sportfish catch this week for Pisces anglers.
OTHER SPECIES:
After marlin, dorado was the most likely catch, the difference here was
that multiple catches were more likely with catches of up to nine fish
per day as large as 25 LBS. West Bend, Wisconsin anglers James, Jason,
Sam & Steve were pleased to catch nine dorado near La Antena as well
as release a striped marlin aboard Pisces Andrea. La Brisa,
fishing a little closer at Migrino managed eighty dorado this same day
for Simendinger family, all on live bait. Our total dorado count this
week was 140 fish. Yellowfin tuna showed up at one of their favorite
haunts, San Jaime, but were not a sure thing. Ruthless released one of the smallest yellowfin tunas we have ever seen at around 2 LBS. One of the top tuna producers was C Rod
who had twenty tunas up to 20 LBS at San Jaime for the Bradley family
from Texas, who used both cedar plugs and kite to get hooked up. It was
interesting to see a different species of tuna close to the yellowfin,
skipjacks; usually found closer to shore. Thirteen percent of our
charters found yellowfin and when encountered catches of up to twenty
fish could be had, resulting in a total tuna catch of 97fish. The
skipjacks weren’t found by so many boats, but when you hit the school
you could load up, in fact our anglers caught 88 of these little guys,
with many released; they are strong on light tackle. The BIG STORY this week is the largest wahoo we have seen in 15 years
– the monster fish hit a Chiwillie lure off of Margaritas with such
ferocity that the crew thought it was a sea lion at first. Dean Reed
from Cape Canaveral reeled in this beauty on Tracy Ann,
which when weighed on a certified scale was 87 LBS! Several other
smaller wahoo were caught this week but none came close to this one.
Pangas inshore were able to catch stray marlin plus a few sierra and
pompano.

BILLFISH: This week saw steady
catches of striped marlin for a little more than half of the boats, with
a few sudden spikes of multiple catches per single boat. Weather has
been colder and windier, which meant boats couldn’t always fish the
Pacific where more marlin were believed to be. One of the top catches
in a single day goes to Pisces Yahoo
for six stripers up to 140 LBS at Pozo de Cota for the Hattners from
Keller, Texas on December 20th; they also caught two dorado. Tracy Ann
had the only sailfish of the week, a big one, estimated at 110 LBS,
plus two striped marlin released for Swedish anglers Ola Eklund, Peter
Mucander and Johan Ingenmanusson; all three fish took live caballito at
the Herradura. Next day out it was Greg & Jack Sullivan who had the
best day, this time aboard La Brisa
as they released four striped marlin up to 120 LBS at Los Arcos. They
also managed to land two dorado for the dinner table. It’s no wonder Tracy Ann
won top marlin boat for Pisces this year; they seem to have a knack for
it and proved it by releasing six marlin up to 100 LBS on December 21st
for McCullough family from Fayetteville, Georgia – well done! One of
the most enviable days was aboard Flora T
for a group from Dallas headed up by Darrell Overcash – they released
three striped marlin and caught six dorado and two wahoo, fishing at Los
Arcos. The marlin were spread out this week, with no one set location.
Boats started out fishing on the Cortez side then moved up the Pacific
as far as Golden Gate. Fifty one percent of our charters caught between
one and six marlin giving us a total catch of 61 billfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado
catches were steady for most boats and could be caught over a wide area.
When found, catches ranged from one to nine fish in the 15 to 25 LB
class. Pisces Valerie
had an active day on dorado on the Pacific at Migrino where they caught
nine dorado on a combination of ballyhoo and ballyhoo for Brad Lassila
and family from Colorado. Adriana,
one of our 28 ft. boats, had some good dorado action too, with eight
caught up to 25 LBS at Los Arcos and Margaritas for a group of anglers
from Kansas. Fifty three percent of our anglers caught dorado this week
giving us a total catch of 129 fish. Tuna catches were very slow this
week with just a few boats even finding them. The exception was Bill Collector
who headed to Jaime Bank on the Pacific and managed to land fifteen up
to 20 LBS for Ross Benson and Steve Buckley and friends from New Jersey
and Massachusetts respectively. Several boats caught wahoo this week
but they are by no means plentiful and tended to be small at 15 to 20
LBS. There was not much inshore action except for an odd triggerfish,
rooster or sierra.

BILLFISH: The flurry of marlin
activity we saw a couple of weeks ago, when boats reported multiple
hook-ups did not last and we saw a substantial drop on billfish catches,
however, we know fish are in the area, they are just not super hungry.
Besides, the majority of boats are concentrating on the sure thing
which was dorado. Nevertheless, we had some great catches and we were
pleased to encounter a few late season blue marlin, still in the area
due to warmer water temperatures. Attitude Adjustment,
a 46 ft. Bertram, had a double marlin day at San Jaime for anglers
Philip Davis and Richard Ward – releasing a large striped marlin each,
around 160 LBS as well as a pilot shark and six skipjacks. This same
day, December 9th it was our panga Poseidon
fishing the other direction, on the edge of the 95 spot that released a
small blue marlin, after it took a purple colored lure for long time
Pisces friend Bob Sallis from Canada. Next day out Pisces Ruthless
had a blue marlin, this time on the Pacific, with this fish also taking
a lure for Barry Reddick from Texas. Not to be outdone, Tracy Ann went
the opposite direction to the other boats and headed to Punta Gorda
where they released three striped marlin on live bait, for Stephen
Oppenheim and friends from California. Top catch of the week though has
to go to Pisces Bill Collector;
they fished at San Jaime on December 11th and released an approximate
200 LB blue marlin, a striped marlin, a pilot shark and boated seven
yellowfin tuna; for Paul Linden, Brandon Long and Joe Janovich from
Nebraska. Basically the billfish were spread out this week being found
on both the Cortez and Pacific sides with more boats fishing the Pacific
due to the strong dorado bite. A few sailfish were also caught. Blue
marlin tended to take lures whereas striped marlin and sailfish
preferred live bait. Twenty five percent of Pisces anglers caught a
total of 24 billfish consisting of 19 striped marlin, 3 blue marlin and 2
sailfish, all released.

OTHER SPECIES: Anglers had
fun this week with double and triple hook ups on dorado up to 25 LBS,
which is great as they had been conspicuously absent from our shores for
months. Catches concentrated on the Pacific from La Lobera up to
Golden Gate, with areas like Elias Calles, Pozo de Cota and Migrino
seeing most action. Tracy Ann
had a busy day for Bob Sallis and party at Cerritos as they caught
seventeen dorado in the 15 to 22 LB class, six released with a
combination of bait and lures working. Ruthless
also had seventeen dorado, caught on December 8th at Gaspareno; five
were released for William Hanner and Donovan Smith and friends. Catches
per boat ranged from one to fourteen with some exceptions; the average
catch was around seven fish per boat. Dorado was the most common catch
this week with eighty three percent of our charters catching a total of
425 fish. Some yellowfin tuna were caught this week, mostly at one of
the spots famous for them, San Jaime. The catches were of football size
fish, no more than 15 LBS and catches of up to seven fish resulting in a
total catch of 39 fish for ten percent of the boats. A couple of boats
had great mixed catches starting with Bill Collector on
December 5th with Boston, Mass. Anglers Seth & Chris Frattasio on
board; they did very well to release a 170 LB striped marlin, a pilot
shark, boat four dorado and catch seven yellowfin tuna and thirteen
skipjacks. The Kilburg party from Scottsdale, Arizona had an
outstanding day on Valerie
with a sailfish released, four yellowfin tuna, two dorado and ten
skipjacks (eight released). Other catches were closer to shore and
consisted of mainly skipjack and the odd sierra here and there.

BILLFISH: Another great
week for late season blue marlin catches in Cabo! We are not used to
seeing all these blues so late in the year and surely this is the result
of the “El Niño” current which has brought consistent warm water
throughout the year and therefore steady, good catches. Let's start
with the Pisces 28ft “Adriana”

Sweden. Pisces 38ft “C Rod”
released another 200 lb. blue outside of el Cerro for William Gluckman

forty miles out from Land’s End for Richard & Grey Simoncic and

Pisces Sportfishing crews and anglers are
showing theirs skills again – during the last fishing tournament of 2015
in Los Cabos! On Day 2 of The Los Cabos Big Game Charter Boat Classic Pisces Speedwell
crew led by James Stewart from Andrews, Texas, reeled in 307-pound blue
marlin, which got plenty of attention at the docks, and made the team
very happy with $2,500 USD earned for the catch. This is the first ever
qualifying blue marlin to be weighed in the history of the tournament.
James and his group from Texas have fished every year in the Charter
Classic since it began and it seems Speedwell was their lucky charm.

We need to mention Top Junior Angler honours, which went to 8-year-old Luca Chiavetta from San Jose, California who caught a 19.8-pound dorado aboard Pisces Bill Collector. Congrats Luca!

BILLFISH: Another great and
busy week in Cabo for billfish with an increase of thirty one percent
over last week. We are still seeing a late run of Blue Marlin in the
area coming in general from different fishing grounds spread over the
Pacific side and the Cortez side. Art Hevener, Sean Ziconi and the rest
of the Hevener´s gang Arthur and William, released a 350 lbs. blue
marlin on November 16th aboard the 31ft Halcon. The group of Anders
Lundgren from Sweden on their yearly visit to Cabo managed to release a
blue marlin on Pisces “Tiburon” outside of the 11.50 spot. Twenty eight foot Pisces “Andrea”
went all the way to the Golden Gate making a memorable trip for father
and son Jim and Brandon Boyd, from Bal Harbor, FL. Released a 200 lb.
blue; good job guys! On the other hand Stefan Trumstedt, Kjell
Ljunggren and Jens Bergstrom had a great fight on the Pisces “Rebecca”
releasing another blue marlin and four striped marlin on November 18th.
But we have more! Another group visiting from England, headed up by
Bob Challis, Peter Gurd and Paul Smith did well on the 35ft Valerie releasing a 250 lbs. blue marlin at Cabeza de Ballena in the Sea of Cortez. Pisces 32 ft. “Bill Collector”
with Brian & Lori Swift, James and Wendy Yale from Texas aboard did
well releasing a 210 lbs. blue marlin and dorados over at San Jaime
Bank. Pisces 38ft “C Rod” our most recent winner from the Tuna Tournament
battled another blue marlin for William Gluckman and Sonia Schaefer
from New Jersey. More Swedish anglers in town! Ulf Christiansen and
Lennart Arrenius, first timers are huge billfish fans and decided to
visit our areas, which paid off as they released a blue marlin and a
sailfish aboard the 28ft Pisces “Adriana”; they are promising to return next year! Loads of striped marlin released as well! Pisces 35ft “Listo”
released three striped marlin at San Jaime, with the Alexis Hodges
group, Cecile, Angie and James visiting from Woodrock, Georgia and
Phoenix, Arizona. Pisces “Shambala”
our 60 ft. Hatteras had one of the rarest of billfish catches, a
Shortbill Pacific Spearfish, a fish few anglers can claim to have caught
in the Los Cabos area. Captain Nayo mentioned this is his first one
in over 40 years fishing! The crew also managed to release a Striped
Marlin at the Herradura for the John Pappanastos group visiting from
Houston, Dallas. That’s what we call lucky! The fish was kept for local
scientists to study. Pisces 31ft “Ruthless”
was hot on November 18th releasing four Striped Marlin and two dorados
for Bruce Tysor and friends visiting from Sidney, Iowa at Punta Lobos.
Our good friend Bob Stewart and friends aboard the 38ft Pisces “Speedwell” released a 307 lbs. blue marlin, one Striped Marlin, two dorados and one rooster at Migriño putting them in top spot at the Los Cabos Charter Boat Classic Tournament. “Flora T”

Seattle, Washington were very happy! Pisces 31 ft. “Cabolero” released
