Bisbee East Cape Results & Fish Report

July 20th to 26th, 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate 95% All Species Combine
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 77%, Dorado 34%, Tuna 53%

JOHN POREMBA FROM JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA RELEASED THREE MARLIN & BOATED TWO DORADO ABOARFD REBECCA
BILLFISH: This last week saw the East Cape Bisbee Tournament take place, which is no longer a warm up for the Black and Blue but rather a well-attended and popular event.  A total of 70 teams took place, including a sailboat rigged to fish. The three day event produced a total of 214 billfish, but it was down to a nail biting conclusion as no fish were weighed in on day one or day two, the third day sped by and though lots of hook up’s and captures were reported they all ended up being releases, as none of the fish fought would make the 300 lb. minimum mark. In 2012 no qualifying fish were weighed so tournament organizers were on the edge of their seats hoping this year some big fish would make it back to the scale. Late in the day team Hayseeds from Oregon fishing aboard 29 ft. local boat “Eclipse” pulled in with a 337 lb. blue marlin and won the event – their total winnings were $44,100.00. Another big payout was for local angler Chucky Van Wormer aboard “La Hielera” with a 192 lb. yellow fin tuna that earned him $63,150.00. Meanwhile in Cabo we enjoyed fantastic fishing with the highlight of the week a 420 lb. blue marlin, bigger than anything in the tournament , caught by Pisces Adriana by angler Trey Carlile from Bullard, Texas; the fish took an orange and black lure 23 miles out from Land’s End. Trey also caught seven tuna and a dorado with wife Jennifer. We had full moon this week and unlike the last couple of months, during this phase we did see a slow down on striped marlin catches, where averages per boat dropped to one and two marlin, plus a dorado & some tuna. However, directly after the full moon the catches began to creep up and we saw catches like Great Escape Jr. with seven released for Doug Miller & Doug Miller III from San Antonio, Texas, at Punta Gorda. Your odds of catching fish of any type this week with Pisces were ninety five percent with seventy seven percent catching billfish. Our total count was 92 striped marlin, 1 blue marlin and 3 sailfish – two marlin were kept, the rest were released.
PORTER GROUP FROM TEXAS HAD LOTS OF FUN, JUST ONE OF THE DORADO THEY CAUGHT
OTHER SPECIES: After marlin, yellow fin tuna was the next fish you were most likely to encounter this week. As in previous reports, when found in schools anglers could have a field day, loading up on football size tuna perfect for eating. Fifty three percent of our boats caught this species with catches ranging from one to thirty plus fish in a day. Pisces La Brisa had a super busy day for Ola Steimoen & Stig Torudi, visiting all the way from Norway. They caught 35 tuna, 2 dorado and released a striped marlin.  Our total tuna count for the week was 297. Dorado catches percentage wise, weren’t far behind with thirty four percent of our boats finding fish in the 20 to 50 lb. class, however the catches were usually of a single fish, whilst trolling for marlin and occasionally up to three per boat.  Great Escape got a nice 40 lb. wahoo for Chad Gaudet from L.A as well as a tuna and striped marlin.
LOCATION: San Jaime, off of Land’s End, Chileno, 11.50, Punta Gorda
WEATHER: Moderate seas, some days partly cloudy, hot.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 82 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, green/black, orange/black, cedar plugs.

420 LB BLUE MARLIN CAUGHT ABOARD ADRIANA

420 LB blue marlin caught aboard Pisces 28 ft cruiser Adriana, one day before the East Cape Bisbee, which got underway today with a line up of 70 boats - shame that this boat is not in the tournament. This impressive fish was caught by Trey & Jennifer Carlile from Bullard, Texas who also caught a 45 lb dorado and 7 tuna, 23 miles off of Lands End. The blue marlin took an orange/black lure.

NEW FISH REPORT

JULY 23th to 19th, 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 98%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 93%, Dorado 36%, Tuna 26%, Wahoo 8%

BILLFISH: Another fantastic week in Cabo; surely we have the best sports fishery in the world.  We had a landmark day July 18th, when two of our boats showed up at the dock with swordfish, as well as releasing a striped marlin each. First up was a nice 215 lb. fish, taken aboard Great Escape Jr. by  Harrison Stern from Laguna Hills Ca. followed by a 94 lb. for a young lady angler, Krista Bava from Hughson, Ca. – both fish took live bait in the San Jaime area, both were caught on 40 lb. test, taking a little over an hour to land. It was a bit strange this week that the fishing switched abruptly from Punta Gorda to San Jaime on the Pacific for a couple of days, before settling in between the two points at the 95 and11.50 spots. Marlin fishing continues to be outstanding with not as many double digit, per boat days, but plenty of two to five fish days for a good number of boats. Pisces Tracy Ann was our top marlin boat with six, eight and nine marlin on three consecutive days – the nine marlin day had 12 year old Kyle Sofhauser from Philipsburg, New Jersey thrilled as they also caught a 55 lb. roosterfish and 30 lb. snapper – what a day!  Patrick Neville from Bradenton Florida along with wife Jean, released eight striped marlin aboard Tracy Ann, a fabulous day, but then Patrick once caught practically the combined weight of these eight fish in one day, back in 2011, when on this same boat, he caught a 746 lb. blue marlin, one day before the Bisbee Black & Blue. Not only were there striped marlin, we are beginning to see more sailfish between 50 and 80 lbs.; Great Escape Jr released two for Jon McNulty and caught 8 tuna and 1 dorado at the 95 spot. Ninety three percent of our anglers caught billfish this week, breaking down into 146 striped marlin, 6 sailfish and 2 swordfish. The swordfish were boated as well as two marlin, the rest were released.

OTHER SPECIES: The yellow fin tuna, so abundant last week began to move further out so we did not have the record catches of school size fish this week but boats could land two to nine in day as they found smaller outer schools, when looking for marlin – the exception was Pisces Rebecca who caught 23 ranging from 20 to 40 lbs. for Andrew Enos and Andrew Allen from Santa Fe Springs, Ca. on July 14th, who also released a striped marlin and boated a dorado. Twenty six percent of our charters found tuna giving us a total catch of 103 fish. Dorado catches were a bit higher at thirty six percent, with catches of one and two fish when found. A couple of boats such as Pisces Valerie, caught four up to 40 lbs. for Mark & Garrett Benson with friends from Grapevine, Texas – they also released four marlin, so a great day for this group. It was nice to see more wahoo this week, in fact eight percent of boats caught fish up to 45 lbs.; the meat of this fish is so delicious that it rivals swordfish.  A great mixed day was had Sandy & Scott Logan from Springfield, VA, when they released three striped marlin and a 60 lb. mako shark, before boating 2 dorado up to 40 lbs. and a 40 lb. wahoo. Roosterfish were taken further offshore than normal and we had several in the 40 to 50 lb. class.
WEATHER: Looking at the news and the scorching temperatures around the world, we have enviable weather right now. Sunny though not overly hot, especially on the Pacific, air temperatures were mostly in the 80’s seas was moderate to calm.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 80 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, ballyhoo, blue/white, orange/yellow, guacamaya

LANDMARK FOR PISCES, TWO SWORDFISH SAME DAY

Yesterday boats did an abrupt about face and headed up to the Pacific after months of fishing the Sea of Cortez. The area around San Jaime produced not only striped marlin, dorado and roo...sterfish but also TWO swordfish. Our first one of the day was aboard Pisces Great Escape Jr. caught by Harrison Stern from Laguna Hills, Ca, a nice 215 lb specimen which took him an hour and 15 minutes to boat on 40 lb test; they also released a striped marlin. The second swordfish of the day, was taken by a young lady aboard Pisces Rebecca, Krista Bava from Hughson, California, reeled in the 90 lb swordfish, while fishing with her dad, who released a striped marlin.

Is This a Good Day of Fishing, or What?

Is this a good day of fishing of what? Pisces Tracy Ann caught and released NINE striped marlin as well a 55 LB rooster fish and a 30 LB snapper; yes top boat for July 16th. Can you imagine the memories that 12 year old Kyle Sofhauser from ...Phillipsburg, New Jersey, will have for the rest of his life, as he relates the story in years to come, of how he pulled in a 55 lb roosterfish, 30 lb snapper and how between the family released NINE marlin. Listeners will think he is making up a fish story......

LATEST FISH REPORT

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
JULY 6TH TO 12TH, 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate 93%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 77%, Tuna 47%, Dorado 26%

The Hart Group From Porter, Texas Fished Aboard CRod and Great Escape Jr and Snapped this Great Shot
BILLFISH: We again experienced superb catches in Los Cabos this week, despite the port being closed one day due to an approaching storm, which turned out to be nothing more than a day of rain and choppy seas. At this time of year, practically every week there will be some kind of tropical weather off of Mexico, the thing is not to be daunted but to go ahead with fishing plans. Thankfully most of the storms skirt us and this time of year is actually produces some of the best catches. This time our cooler water and air temperatures took the wind right out of the sails of Hurricane Erick and it was downgraded to a tropical storm. One of the nicest catches this week was a 172 lb. swordfish; hard to say which is a more elusive catch, the swordfish or spearfish. Anyhow this swordfish was captured aboard Pisces Rebecca by Eddie Penn from Houston, Texas after it took the second live caballito cast to it whilst on the surface 20 miles outside the 120 spot.  This was not the only fish caught on this boat, for Eddie Penn who along with Ashley Corrales, released a striped marlin and caught seven tuna. Other notable catches were had mostly before the port was closed on Monday such as seven striped marlin and a dorado aboard Pisces Rebecca on July 7th for Robert Plugis and friends from Sewell, New Jersey. This same day Gerald, Matthew & Ronald Levy, from Winter Park, West Palm Beach & Jupiter, Florida, respectively had a fabulous day aboard Pisces Great Escape Jr. with eight striped marlin and a sailfish released outside the 11.50 spot; all fish were caught with live caballito. Pisces C Rod a 38 ft. Blackfin had a fabulous day for Dusty & Bailee Hammock from Birmingham, Alabama who, along with friends, released five striped marlin and boated a nice wahoo. These mentioned were the most outstanding catches, though most boats caught one to three marlin as the norm. Catches were not as prolific as last week, perhaps due to the rain and small storm which mixed things up, meaning fish could not be found in one set location as in previous days, we also felt a distinct cooling on the Pacific; nevertheless seventy seven percent of Pisces charters caught billfish, breaking down to 94 striped marlin, 3 sailfish and 1 swordfish.
These cute girls from Cabo caught this 30 lb dorado aboard Pisces Rebecca
OTHER SPECIES: For sheer numbers nothing could beat the yellow fin tuna this period; our boats hauled in or released a total of 409 with double digit catches common. The weights on the tuna were smallish at 15 to 20 lbs., though we did hear of some 150 lb’ers taken.  Pisces Andrea had a total of 32 tuna outside the Herradura, plus a dorado for Yusuro Asaba & Yukihko Ozawa from Kamakura, Japan and Tracy Ann totaled 31 tuna between the Herradura and 95 spot for Doug, Ben & Josh Russel from Las Vegas. Most days the tuna were 25 to 30 miles offshore and took cedar plugs. Although the total count was high for this species, you were more likely to hook up to a marlin; for tuna your odds of catching were forty seven percent. Dorado catches were similar to last week with twenty six percent of our boats catching one or two fish and occasionally up to four with sizes from 15 to 40 lbs. John and Luke Minter from Austin, Texas caught three lovely black sea bass that weighed from 25 to 40 lbs. aboard the panga Gloria, whilst other pangas caught the odd large rooster fish, needlefish and a few snapper.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Port closed July 8th, due to rain and choppy seas, skies then cleared but we had seas on the choppy side most of the week.
LOCATION: Herradura, 95 spot, 11.50 spot, 120 spot, 180, 18 miles from Lands End.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 78-80 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, cedar plugs, green/yellow.

SWORDFISH

SWORDFISH- this prized catch was taken by Eddie Penn from Houston, Texas aboard Pisces Rebecca, one of the most sought after catches of fisherman. Unlike other locations where night fishing is the only way to find this elusive billfish, we catch swordfish during the daytime, when they are up sunning themselves on the surface. The fish weighed 172 lbs (on our new certified scale) and took the second live caballito cast to it 30 miles outside the 120 spot. As if this wasn't enough Ashley Corrales who was on board with Eddie, released a striped marlin and they caught 7 tuna. Let us know if you have every caught a broadbill swordfish, it would be interesting to know how many of our fans have every fought or landed one.

EDDIE YOU ARE KILLING US, HOW ABOUT A SMILE?

Best Fishing Report of the Year!

June 29th to July 5th, 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 99%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 95%, Dorado 28%, Tuna 28%, Small Game 8%

BILLFISH: This has been the best week of the year so far for fishing; “wow!” is all we can say and even we, used to the great Cabo fishery, are astounded at how good the catches have been. Our total marlin catch this week was 344 fish – all but two were released. Not only that Pisces Speedwell fought a 500 lb. blue marlin for four hours before it finally broke off. As we close out our week, Pisces Rebecca has a swordfish hooked up also. Usually a catch of three marlin would be worthy of mention in the weekly report, but this period the fishing was so good that it took a catch of eight marlin or more to get a special mention – not taking away from all the other great catches. The big plus this week was the appearance of schools of yellow fin tuna, so a catch of two or three marlin, plus several tuna was a distinct possibility. Top marlin day was after the threat of Hurricane Cosme, when the port was fully re-opened, June 29th. This day saw Pisces Listo release 16 marlin and catch 1 dorado for Keith Rhodes, participating in the Stars & Stripes Tournament. This same day Pisces Bill Collector and released 10 marlin for John Manzi, whilst Great Escape had 9, Great Escape Jr and Ruthless had 8 stripers each. Pisces Rebecca did very well this week releasing 9 striped marlin and catching 3 tuna and 1 doardo for Travis Prudhomme & Kyle Boultinghouse from Texas on July 1st, before going on to release 8 marlin for David Lavern from Houston, on July 5th, who also caught 5 tuna at the 11.50 spot.  Pisces Valerie had an 8 marlin day for Rob & Laurie Hohos Brad & Patricia Summer & Kevin & Audrey Hall, all from Texas – with the marlin taking live caballito. Fishing was from the 95 spot to Destiladeras, with live bait and frozen ballyhoo accounting for the majority of catches. Ninety five percent of our boats caught billfish this week, breaking down into 344 striped marlin, 1 sailfish and 1 blue marlin lost.

OTHER SPECIES: July 4th was when the yellow fin tuna put in an appearance for few days when boats regularly caught between 8 and 25 footballs size fish outside the 11.50 spot. Top tuna boat was Pisces Rebecca with a total of 30 at the 120 spot, plus two striped marlin for Iman Dolatshahi & friends from Columbia, Maryland. The bite was hot for a couple of days, before the schools moved on and out of range, but that doesn’t mean there are more right behind them. Pisces boats caught a total of 212 yellow fin tuna, for twenty eight percent of our charters – showing the catches per boat were high in quantity. The same percentage of boats caught dorado, the difference being that when found the catches were seldom more than one or two fish, but they were generally good size fish in the 20 to 50 lb. class. Pisces Tracy Ann had a very nice 55 lb. dorado for Devon, who is from San Antonio, Texas. Because our boats were concentrating offshore, we sent just a few pangas inshore, though there was not much action as the surf was stirred up after the big swells. They did catch a few sierra, bonita, jack crevalle & released baby hammerhead and roosterfish.
LOCATION: Sea of Cortez, 95 spot to Destiladeras.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Skies clear, seas on the rough side close to port but smoother once you got offshore.
AVERAGE WATE TEMP: 75 F
BEST LURES: Live caballito or mackerel, frozen ballyhoo, cedar plugs for tuna, caballito & green/yellow lures for dorado.

Here's the Fish Report

JUNE 22ND to 27th, 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 84%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 61%, Dorado 20%, Tuna 14%, Small Game 5%

PASCAL ROMMELAERE & CHRISTIAN DOORNAERT, CERTAINY TRAVELLED A LONG WAY TO CATCH THEIR MARLIN BUT WORTH IT , AS SHOWN BY THE FLAGS FLOWN ABOARD LA BRISA. THESE GUYS ARE FROM BELGIUM

BILLFISH: This week was bit on the up and down side, but that was due to the seas rather than the fishing. With hurricane Cosme to the south of us, there was no immediate threat to the Los Cabos area as it spun westward into the Pacific, but it did cause some very big seas, which led to the port being closed partially for a couple of days. The large swells continued for several days causing a number of anglers to get sea-sick and asking to return to port. Those that persevered though usually had a successful day and at the close of this report, fishing was as good if not better as it was a few weeks ago with boats releasing record numbers of striped marlin. The Stars and Stripes Charity tournament which is the classiest and most philanthropic tournament held in Cabo, took place this Friday and Saturday and despite bumpy seas the first day, turned in record numbers of marlin caught and released, 299 in fact the best in the history of the 17 year old tournament.  Some of the better catches this week were aboard Pisces C Rod with five striped marlin released for Phong & Lisa Voung from Texas who were fishing with Oli & Carlos Vicente on June 27th. This same day both La Brisa and Tracy Ann released four marlin each between the Herradura and 11.50 spot – with the boats using live mackerel, live caballito, frozen ballyhoo and guacamayo lures.  Pisces Tracy Ann had experienced a quadruple marlin catch the day before at the 95 spot, closer to Cabo, for Sawley, Kristi and Sawley Jr Wilde form Gillette, Wyoming.  Frank & Chris Fabiani from Anaheim California fished aboard Pisces Rebecca and were our top anglers on June 22nd, with four marlin released. Pisces anglers caught a total of 55 striped marlin this week, all but one released.

SARAH FALCONA & MARTIN SUMMERFORD, FROM BENOWA, OLD AUSTRALIA, CAUGHT THIS LARGE MALE DORADO ABOARD GREAT ESCAPE JR.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches are beginning to become more regular, with twenty percent of boats hooking up to fish in the 15 to 48 lb. class, however, it was rare to catch more than one and all were hooked whilst trolling for marlin. After the two month absence of yellowfin tuna, Pisces Cabolero found them outside the 95 spot and managed to catch eighteen football size fish plus a dorado for Mark Baziak and friends. Cabolero however, was the only boat to have any success for this species, except for single small one aboard Ruthless. Inshore there were a few jack crevalles and rooster fish, but otherwise the shoreline was too rough to fish.
LOCATION: Punta Gorda, Destiladeras, 11.50 spot, 95 spot, Herradura, Cabrillo sea mount.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Skies mostly clear, humid and hot due to hurricane to the south, rough seas up until the end of the week.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73-76F
BEST LURES: Live mackerel, caballito, ballyhoo, green/orange/yellow lures.
Based on the catches of Pisces by Tracy Ehrenberg
