It's raining!!!...yes, rain in Cabo

Hi guys,

For the anglers that are new in Cabo, you need to know that we only get rain maybe 10 days a year, and today, was one of those days.

There is a tropical depression "Douglas" passing by, about 203 nautical miles from La Paz, and going north west at a speed of 07 knots. Winds of 20 knots with gusts of 35 knots, which according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center's website will be the strongest winds of this depression and that will be on July 3rd midnight.

Adriana's first Panga Trip

Hi there anglers,

I want to share my fishing experience in the new marina Puerto Los Cabos in San Jose.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning and we meet our dock master Mario in Puerto Los Cabos, our captain Modesto was already waiting for us, we had arranged some drinks, snacks and of course a bunch of live bait. We had at least 50 sardines in the bait well!! when you walk through the marina slips you can see live bait swimming all over the place just waiting to be caught it is incredible.. We went out only for two hours early in the morning, the water conditions were perfect, flat as a lake. Captain started to throw the live bait behind us "chimiando la carnada" he said it's called in Spanish, to attract the fish, the rods and lines set up and ready to catch fish..The action started with baby roosters, one after another, Pepe (my nephew) and I had double hook ups many times...we even had to work out the lines as the sierras (Spanish mackerel) and rooster were so many they were getting tangled moving all the time in the water.

We caught and release about 10 roosters and we kept the sierras for a good fried fillet, we did good! we enjoyed the time wit captain Modesto with his clean, new and fast panga, a Josefino captain (local captain) who knows all kind of all stories. After arriving to the marina the fillet guy is ready to do a fantastic job with our fish.

Happy anglers enjoying their catch...

Small game vs billfish

Hola anglers,

The last couple of days we had some up and downs on the marlin catch, however, it has been awesome for small game, we have a lot of yellow tail, bonita and rooster fish.

Just yesterday La Brisa caught 16 bonitas ranging between 10 to 18 lbs, Tracy Ann and Mucho Bueno caught 20 bonitas each.

Bonita is not the most tasty fish, but it is great for sashimi...

Father & Son day on the water...

Hi guys,

Yesterday we had Bernie Flather and his son JP who caught his very first marlin aboard the Mextime.

We had a very nice increase on the marlin catch this past week and we also caught a few yellow fin tunas and Dorado.

Inshore fishing is still hot at La Playita in San Jose del Cabo.

Quick note...

As you can see in our weekly fish report http://www.piscessportfishing.com/fishreport.html we had a pretty windy week, however, starting yesterday, the sun was shining, the wind calmed down a bit, and the catch was awesome, Yahoo released 5 striped marlin, and total we released 15 marlin between 6 boats.

So will you come and get maybe 5 marlins in one day, or will you stay at home and watch the game?

Now in San Jose...

Hello Anglers,

For all of you who are staying in San Jose, we have an office there too, it's right next to the Tropicana Restaurant and across the street from the Municipal Hall.

At the moment we have not send any boats to dock there, however, when the fishing is on that side, our boats can pick you up from La Playita Dock at Puerto Los Cabos, please keep in mind, when the fishing is close to Cabo, we can't send the boats to pick you up from San Jose, you will loose a lot of fishing time.

Here are a couple of shots to give you an idea of where the office and the dock are.

Quick note...

We had a couple of days with clouds and strong winds, but today the sun is shining and the wind has calmed a bit.

Fishing has been on the Pacific side for marlin, we have heard of many rooster, red snapper, yellow tail and sierritas (spanish mackerel) very close to shore in San Jose del Cabo.

Here is a picture of a very nice Sierrita (spanish mackerel) caught on La Playita at San Jose.

NO BANANAS ON THE BOAT!!!!!

But why?

There are many stories about the reason not to bring bananas on the boat, there is one that says that there was a deckhand who slipped on one left on deck and made the captain lose a giant fish, another says the oil that a banana leaves on the hands can scare the fish away, that bananas can give you "the runs" and you spend the day on the head wasting fishing time, but doing some research I found the next, which seems the most logical version...

Back in the 17th and 18th century, all ships making their way around the continents, often had to stop in tropical islands to re-supply food and water, and many times, crew members loaded boats with banana crates, which came packed with bugs, spiders, scorpions and even snakes, all of these creatures crawled their way into the crew bunks, storage rooms and eventually, the Captain's quarters, making life miserable aboard his ship, so the captains started a rumor just before every trip that bananas were bad luck, remember that we are talking about the 17th century, so superstitions were taken very seriously.

Please leave us your comments and let us know of any other superstitions that you know of regarding fishing.
