Comments on large marlin

We have received several aggressive emails from anglers berating us for the dead, almost 900 lb marlin – which we didn’t kill. This fish was caught at the East Cape aboard a boat called Rude Baby. Yes, we are still pro-conservation, yes we still actively promote catch and release. Our release rate is 98.5% and we release thousands of marlin a year. However, the law in Mexico allows each angler holding a fishing license to kill one marlin per day. In Cabo we have a self imposed agreement, which lowers this to one marlin per boat per day, between local fleet owners. We talk to anglers ahead of time and suggest that they release their billfish, but, if they decide to keep one, they are within their rights. Nearly all anglers prefer to release. Some fish die, some anglers want the meat. The tiny percentage of what is kept by sportsfishing is not even a drop in a bucket to what commercial boats take. It’s funny but during big money tournaments like Bisbee, nobody says a word about the fish being killed. Even pro conservationists participate in these tournaments and that is their decision. You can be a conservationist, but it does not mean that you never kill a fish.

Birthday toast aboard Bill Collector

Our good friend Johnny Mack Powers fished recently and celebrated his wife birthday aboard Bill Collector, as you can see he had a great time, caught fish and went home happy. Thanks Johnny for continuing to fish with Pisces we appreciate your loyalty.

Pisces,
Just thought I would drop you a note to let you know what a great time we had, caught a lot of tuna 17, 30 to 40 pounds, 3 large dorado up to 40 pounds, and one sailfish, a pequeno one, but our friend Eric had never caught one so, it was worth the trip to watch him. As you know the Pisces crew was great ( Juan / Adriana / both Jorge's ) They helped me have a surprise birthday party on the boat 8/8/08 with cake and champagne. We really got her and all of us and the crew had a toast, she will never forget this birthday. Captain Julio and mate Esteban are the best, we really enjoy their company they can make a dull day of fishing fun and a great day of fishing the BEST. So far no dull days or skunks, after seven trips, knock on wood. Each morning the boat smells of pine soil. Can't wait till December, and the Finger Banks. For the money Bill Collector the best crew / boat going in Cabo, and we have been coming down since 1995.

Pisces is not just Sportfishing...

Everybody associates Pisces with sport fishing, but did you know that we have a whole yacht division? It was a natural to put our years of expertise, local knowledge and contacts together to be able to meet all of our clients boating needs. We have a selection of larger yachts for those who like more comfort or for a those wanting something extra special. For those who need to put together an impressive corporate fishing trip we have state of the art sport fishers in the 50 to 70 ft class. For those wanting a special event, such as a wedding, romantic or family sunset cruise we have some outstanding yachts, with lots of “wow” factor. The sunset cruises especially, are very affordable, when compared what local “booze cruises” or party vessels offer for a private tour. The difference on the larger yachts, many of which you can also fish from, is the feeling of elegance and luxury. We can cater to your every whim down to private chef’s, entertainment whatever you need. Some of these vessels even have Jacuzzi’s on deck. We have expert crews that can take you for trips where you can stay aboard from one to seven nights, into the Sea of Cortez, to discover a side of Los Cabos and Baja, that many think is long past. Once clear of the resorts, there are incredible sights, fishing, beaches and islands to visit, where time has seemed to standstill as they are absolutely unspoiled. A week trip for up to six guests on an elegant vessel such as “Panache” 110 feet, costs $32,500.00* and comes complete with a staff of five. Or how about a trip to Mag Bay to experience a fishing trip of a lifetime, but in comfort…..with your own chef and great surroundings, with long range fishing captains with proven experience.

Though we like to protect our clients privacy here are the names of some of our V.I.P clients that have been aboard our luxury yachts:
Beyonce
Jay Z
Jessica Simpson
Ashley Simpson
Guy Ritchie
Rascal Flatts
Luis Miguel
Salma Hayek
Roger Clemmins
Tom Cruise (who was so thrilled at the sight of whales, promptly jumped overboard to swim with them!)
Keanu Reeves – he fished on one of our 31 ft Bertram's
Timothy Dalton – fished on a 28 ft boat.

Monster marlin caught...

Hi anglers,

We had rumors of a 900 lbs blue marlin caught at the East Cape, now, we can confirm that.

The fish was caught on July 3rd and weighted 898 lbs 25 miles off of the East Cape. Angler
was Jim Schubert from Clovis, California. Believe it or not this fish was caught from a PANGA…..the tackle was 60 lb test spooled on a Senator 112H and the monster fish took a Zuker blood orange lure with some brown.

The fight lasted three and half hours, during which Jim had to contend with a couple of monsoon type downpours and 25 foot swells, though he told me the rain sure felt good to cool him off.

Captain Chuy did a good job whilst motoring the “Rude Baby” and called his brother on a larger boat once the fish was gaffed to try and help them get the fish to shore, however the task proved impossible and they ended up tying the huge fish to the side of the panga and motoring in slowly, taking over three hours to get back.

This is the largest marlin caught in Baja to our knowledge for at least fifteen years.

Well done Jim, you are some angler!

Here you can appreciate the length of this magnificent creature, though it’s sad to see it dragged thru the sand.

A testimonial from our friends, the Levensons

Dear Oscar,

We wanted to write to express our most sincere thanks for providing us a "once in a lifetime" experience aboard the Ruthless on Tues. July 15, 2008! Our Captain, Leon, and Mate, Beto were absolutely outstanding in every respect in making it possible for our family to experience the thrill of catching a spectacular 425 pound blue marlin! Not even in our wildest of dreams did we believe we would experience such a jaw dropping adventure!! We all highly recommended Pisces Fishing Fleet to anyone willing to take on the challenges & joys of deep-sea fishing. We not only caught a fabulous fish we also enjoyed seeing dolphins and sea turtles on our excursion! Oscar, we can't thank you enough for everything you did for us i.e., arranging to take pictures of us with our blue marlin when our own camera failed us, promptly delivering the fillets to our restaurant for our celebration dinner, and providing us with a CD to take home for our memory book. Everything about our fishing experience, thanks to Pisces Fishing Fleet was nothing less than first rate!! I wish you and your fishing crew continued success in Cabo!!

Warm Regards,

The Levenson Family

How to rig a mackerel, circle hook...

This is the way they rig live bait with circle hooks in Australia, of course their bait and hook sizes are bigger than ours, but it's interesting to see different techniques.

Currently we are testing "Quick Rig", a tool that allows for record fast rigging with the circle hook, watch for it on your next trip to Cabo.

We will have a video showing this technique shortly.
