Latest Fish Report

May 27th to June 2nd, 2010

Overall Catch Success Rate 98%

BILLFISH: We had a huge improvement on fishing in Cabo this week, as the El Niño current winds down. But Cabo was not the only news, once again Loreto surprised us all, with two swordfish being caught again, by Robert Ross aboard “Bad Company”, on the same day, May 31st. Robert and his crew were fishing 6 miles east of Isla Catalina when they hooked the first fish, estimated at 160 lbs. They then went on to boat another which they estimated at 400 to 500 lbs. Our thanks to the deckhand Jorge Luis Hernandez for keeping us updated, texting us the info, as it happened and then sending photos for the skeptics. This is quite an achievement anywhere for an angler to catch three swordfish in one month. Marlin catches improved substantially and at the close of the week most boats were catching at least one per day each, with catches of two not uncommon, plus some smaller game fish as well. We had a couple of boats with three marlin days…first was “Rebecca” with three striped marlin and a dorado off of Medanos Blancos for Pat Volpe fishing on her birthday with son John & daughter Lisa from New York City on June 1st. On June 2nd, “La Brisa” fishing the same area, the next day out also released three marlin and boated a 38 lb wahoo for Neal O’Russa and Ryan Cushing from Illinois and Kevin Merta from North Carolina. Other notable catches were again for “Rebecca” on May 31st, with two striped marlin, two dorados and one yellowfin tuna for Megan Weakly from Denver and Chris Potts from Memphis. “Andrea” and “Fearless” also had double billfish days. Live bait was the most effective method for catching marlin. Forty four percent of charters caught marlin, with catches of one to three fish per boat. Twenty five striped marlin were caught overall with all but two released; those brought in weighed 100 and 170 lbs respectively

OTHER SPECIES: At the start of this report yellowfin tuna was the top catch, but this species started to decline as the week progressed. Fifty six percent of boats caught between one and ten tuna from 15 to 30 lbs. “Tracy Ann” was one of the top tuna boats, catching nine up to 20 lbs and releasing a striped marlin for Matt Lewis and friends from Los Angeles. “Bill Collector” also did well to catch eight, plus four roosterfish and a marlin which was released, fishing 12 miles from Cerro Blanco for Kelli & Linda Bullin, Anthony Woods and Christian Smith from Fort Worth, Texas. The total tuna count was eighty six. Dorado catches were average at twenty eight percent, with catches usually of a single fish and occasionally two. There were quite a lot of roosterfish caught inshore as well as a few jack crevalle. Wahoo catches slowed down, with just two 30 lb fish for us. “Ruthless” released two hammerhead sharks 13 miles out from Cerro Blanco and also boated a tuna for Daniel Pacheco and John Knox from San Antonio, Texas.

LOCATION: Three to eleven miles out from Chileno, Cabeza de Ballena, four to 12 miles from Cerro Blanco, Medanos Blancos, Destiladeres.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Quite cool for June….seas on Cortez calm to moderate, windy with whitecaps on the Pacific.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 75 F

BEST LURES: live caballito, ballyhoo, petroleros, guacamaya.

Rooster fish in Cabo

Characterized by its spectacular "rooster comb," is one of the world's most exotic fish species. Roosterfish identification is about as easy as it gets. No other fish looks anything like this true oddball.

The Roosterfish is a member of the Carangidae or Jack Family but it looks like no other jack.

They are widely distributed throughout all waters of Mexico, including all offshore islands. It is viewed as a prized game fish that can generate an adrenaline rush as it chases live bait on the surface. Once hooked it is one of the strongest hombres in the sea.

The Roosterfish is normally a “catch and release” species, as its food value is poor.

It has been reported to reach over four feet in length and up to 114 pounds (the current I.G.F.A. Roosterfish world record, with the fish caught in Mexican waters), and is found along the beach, predominately during warm seasons with water temperatures in excess of 80 degrees, and at depths of up to 100 feet.

The Roosterfish is a true visual phenomenon. It feeds on sardines and other small silvery fishes and travels in packs chasing food onto the shore.

It is usually caught with slowly trolled mullet, ladyfish, or sardines just outside the surf line, outwards from shore to about a quarter-mile. It has also been caught with good regularity from shore using Ranger Plugs and Klassen Poppers, and can also be caught by fly casting

We received a couple of pictures from our friend Butch Bustamante of his fishing trip from a couple of weeks ago.

They released three nice roosterfish aboard Andrea.

Walking around the marina..

We couldn't resist this cutie.....this little jack russel was hanging out at the marina having a cold beer with his owner. He was really friendly and willingly posed for the camera.

Latest Fish Report

May 16th to 26th, 2010

Overall Catch Success Rate 86%

BILLFISH: A lot of marlin were seen in Cabo these past few days, but that doesn’t necessarily meant that a lot were caught. In fact the start of the week was very slow for billfish, though Matt Rainwater from Fort Worth, Texas, did pretty well aboard “Bill Collector”. Matt released his first striped marlin of the week, three and a half miles out from Cerro Colorado on a live caballito and then went on to boat a 50 lb wahoo which took a petrolero lure and three tunas between 30 and 40 lbs that took cedar plugs on May 20th. This same day “Tracy Ann” reported that they had seen seven striped marlin but could not get them to bite. Next day out Matt Rainwater released another striped marlin just two miles off of Cerro Colorado again on a live caballito and on this same day “Great Escape Junior” fishing four miles out from Cabeza de Ballena and Santa Maria saw fifteen marlin that they threw bait too, but just couldn’t get them interested. Matt wasn’t finished though; he went onto release one more striped marlin, this time on May 23rd, just two miles from shore and also got two tunas. It is a good sign that more marlin are being spotted as it means catches will start to increase and we know that they are in the area. As the week progressed we began to see more marlin catches. “Tracy Ann” had two up to 140 lbs plus one tuna for Sean Bohannon & Carrie Grimes from Washington D.C on May 26th two miles from Cerro Blanco and “Andrea” released one this day for a group from Salt Lake City. “Andrea” did well to hook up two striped marlin at Cabeza de Ballena for the Mac Colby family from Atlanta, Ga...one released and the other one 140 lbs died. “Great Escape Jr” released a striped marlin in the same area and also caught an 86 lb hammerhead shark for Erol Onyuru and the McLean’s from Dallas, Texas. Twenty-eight percent of Pisces charters caught marlin this week all on live bait, generally close to shore on the Cortez side. Our total marlin count was thirteen with eleven released.

OTHER SPECIES: OTHER SPECIES: The top catch again this week was yellowfin tuna with fifty one percent of boats catching between one and fifteen fish up to 40 lbs. Cedar plugs and feathers worked well with tuna found both on the Pacific and Cortez side. “C Rod” was the top tuna boat with fifteen and one dorado caught off of Gaspareño for James Little and friends from Folsom California. “La Brisa” had a very nice wahoo weighing in at 65 lbs for Mark Hendrix from Houston, Texas, caught on an orange rapala just one mile out from Santa Maria; he also caught two football size tuna in the same area. Charlie and Sidney Wilhite, Westmonroe, Louisiana caught a 65 lb hammerhead shark aboard “Andrea” three miles off of the Old Lighthouse plus the slightly larger one, mentioned above. Dorado catches were slow with just five taken by our boats. Rooster fish action was fair and there were a few amberjacks and jack crevalles too.

LOCATION: Cerro blanco, two miles, Santa Maria, Chileno, Cabeza de Ballena, off of the Old Lighthouse.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Quite windy, with whitecaps on the Pacific all week, forcing the boats to concentrate on the Cortez side. Skies sunny.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 74 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, cedar plugs, petroleros.

Jim and Cheryl Sedoris from Eagan Minnesota had a great time with sister, Cindy Tovsen aboard “La Brisa” on Saturday.

Despite rough seas they toughed it out and came back with three beautiful tuna which made a delicious dinner and there are still plenty of fillets to take home.

They found the fish eleven miles out from Cerro Blanco.
