ONE OF SEVEN STRIPED MARLIN, RELEASED BY THE RAMBIN PARTY FROM HOUSTON, TEXAS ABOARD TRACY ANN
BILLFISH: Cabo shows no signs of slowing down on the fishing front, despite being plagued with weather issues this past few weeks, anglers in the know are aware that summer is one of the best times to be in Cabo due to the sheer numbers of fish around. Pisces Tracy Ann has a superb week, turning out to be top boat on several days. On September 10th, Harry Schwartz and friends were aboard, fishing outside the 95 spot, when they were fortunate to catch & release seven striped marlin, ranging from 90 to 120 lbs. on a combination of bait and lures, as well as a dorado.  Next day out they headed out to the same location this time with Danny Rambin & friends from Houston, Texas on board who did very well to release seven striped marlin up to 120 lbs. and land a 28 lb. tuna for the table. Pisces Ruthless had a super day too, fishing five miles beyond the 95 spot, catching four sailfish, seven tuna & a dorado for William & Patricia Nopper from Oklahoma. Friday the 13th, proved lucky for Ruthless as she caught the only blue marlin of the week for Clarence Mitchell from Virginia, who with friends, also released a sailfish at the 11.50 spot.  Tracy Ann continued their roll, with five striped marlin, a sailfish & a dorado for David & Terry Harrison, fishing outside the 95 spot, with all catches on live caballito. September 9th, saw Pisces Listo have a jaw dropping day, fishing 39 miles out from the Cerros de Arena, they released a 200 lb. thresher shark, three sailfish, a striped marlin and boated ten tuna up to 40 lbs. for a group from Indiana, consisting of Brian & Angela Barhart, Terry Sayre & Charley Weber. This was not the only big shark this day; Bill Collector released a 150 lb. pilot shark forty miles out for Dan Herrington from San Antonio, Texas.  Eighty four percent of our boats caught billfish this week, breaking down into 98 striped marlin, 25 sailfish & 1 blue marlin.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches were good but dropped quite a bit compared to last week with fifty percent of the boats catching between one and ten dorado up to 40 lbs., exceptional days were had by the panga Gloria & Ruthless who had 15 in a day but could they could not surpass the 18 caught aboard Tracy Ann (7 released) by Donna Shrock & party at Los Arcos.  Our total dorado count this week was 92 fish. Yellow fin tuna catches were steady but not great, with twenty one percent of boats catching between one and ten fish in the football class, with not many over the 30 lb. mark. Just a couple of 40 lb. wahoo this week aboard Ruthless & Tracy Ann respectively. Inshore a few white & black skipjack were caught.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Port was closed one day, but boats had already left, so they got to fish a half day in that instance. Seas average to calm.
LOCATION: 95 spot, 11.50 spot, Cabeza de Ballena, Destiladeras, 6 miles off of El Faro, 30 miles off of Cerros de Arena.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 84 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, cedar plugs, tigrillo, pink.

Fishing Back on Track After Storms

Fishing is back on track in a big way. Now that we could actually get in a few decent fishing days, without the port being closed, we have had some spectacular catches. CATCH OF THEY DAY, goes to Pisces 35 ft Cabo Listo, who on Sept 9th - caught & released a 200 lb thresher shark, three sailfish, a striped marlin and then caught ten tuna between 10 and 40 lbs for Brian Barhart and friends from Indiana. Now that's insane fishing!

VIEW FROM THE PISCES OFFICE TOWARDS A RAINY LAND'S END
BILLFISH: Cabo seems to have been a target for tropical weather over the past couple of weeks with visits from tropical storms Ivo, Juliette, Kiko & Lorena which left a lot of rain, but not much damage. The fish don’t seem to mind though; neither do the anglers, who despite some bumpy seas and several port closures stuck it out and did really well. The fabulous fishing we have been enjoying all year continues and though billfish catches slowed a little after the rains, they were still the number one catch in Cabo with mostly striped marlin being hooked, as well as a good number of sailfish and the occasional blue marlin. The only blue marlin of this past week for us was caught by Mike Vise from Sacramento, California on September 2nd, aboard Pisces Ruthless. The fish was not large at just under 200 lbs. and was caught on the Pacific at Golden Gate. The fish took a live caballito and four dorado were also boated.  On September 5th Pisces Rebecca had an outstanding day with two striped marlin and two sailfish released at San Jaime for Art Heavener, longtime Pisces angler from Houston; he also got six dorados to the boat Ruthless had a notable catch this day too for some other Houston anglers, Todd McIntosh & Jeff Dewease, who were kept busy with a sailfish, striped marlin, wahoo and thirteen dorado. Pisces Tracy Ann & Rebecca both had triple marlin days, plus dorado again for Texas anglers. Eighty eight percent of our boats caught billfish this week giving us a total of 46 striped marlin, 18 sailfish & 1 blue marlin. If the port had been open more the figures could have been at least double this.
KAY HAWKEE, SKYLER & CHELSEA STEVENS FROM ALPINE, CO.
HAD NO WORRIES ABOUT TH E RAIN - LOOK AT THOSE SMILES, THEY RELEASED A STRIPED MARLIN & CAUGHT 4 DORADO & A 55 LB TUNA - GO GIRLS!
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado could not be beat this week for sheer numbers, even though you were more likely to encounter billfish, if you found dorado the amount you could catch was generally higher. It is well known that storms help boost the dorado catches, as after the rains a lot of debris washes down into the sea and dorado love to hang out under floating objects, making them much easier to find.  Catches of fish in the 15 to 40 lb. class, ranged from one to sixteen fish per boat giving us a total catch of 192 fish – many were released. Dorado are taking just about anything; live bait, lures, and feathers – found mostly on the Pacific. Yellow fin tuna were few and far between with just fourteen percent of boats finding a few schools size fish here and there.  We had a couple of wahoo up to 45 lbs. and a few skipjacks. Surf fishing produced jack crevalle.
WEATHER: Seas up and down, rainy and stormy several days.
LOCATION: Pacific - Los Arcos to Golden Gate – two to twenty miles offshore.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 85 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, ballyhoo, feathers, green/yellow color lures.

Hot Weather = Hot Fishing

AUGUST 10TH TO 16TH, 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate 100% All Species Combined
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 81%, Dorado 64%, Tuna 41%

REBECCA, ELEVEN MARLIN, TWO DORADO, NOT TOO SHABBY
BILLFISH: It’s hard to explain but Cabo feels different, the weather & fishing feel like times past, maybe ten to fifteen years ago. Hard to put into words but something you can feel when you have been here a long time. Fishing is off the charts; boats return to port every day with outriggers maxed out with flags and not an inch to spare. Billfish were the number one fish you were most likely to encounter this week with a mix dominated by striped marlin, then blues and sails. Blue marlin are less common and much prized by anglers we often hear from fishermen “I’ve got lots of striped marlin, but never a blue” so it was great to see several anglers achieve this goal. First of the week was Michelle Wood from Houston, Texas who along with friends caught a 190 lb. blue, a striped marlin, eight tuna & a dorado. They fished twelve miles off of Lands End and the blue was hooked on a black & orange lure. Next up was an approximate 200 lb. blue aboard Pisces Ruthless that took a green & yellow lure at the Herradura for Robert & Darla McFall from Cordova, TN who also got three dorados. Pisces Rebecca got a blue marlin slightly larger at 250 lbs., another lure fish, this time a green & white color at the 95 spot for William Harrison & William Smith from Minneapolis, MN who were also fortunate to release two striped marlin & boat a dorado. Great Escape Jr. also had a 200 lb. blue marlin just six miles off of Hotel Finisterra on a black & orange lure, for Thomas Lewis, from Darlington S.C. This same day the largest blue of the week was caught & released aboard Pisces Petrolero by Allen Chan from Norwalk, Connecticut; this was the only blue caught on bait and it was estimated at 320 lbs. Without a doubt Pisces Rebecca was our top marlin boat this week, not only for her blue marlin but for two superb striped marlin days on August 14th, they had Chris & Evelyn Curtis from Beeville, TX who were fishing with the Langbein family, when they caught & released nine striped marlin and landed a nice wahoo for the table. August 16th was a good day for Rebecca too, as they rounded up and fought eleven striped marlin & a couple of dorado for Chad Stachowicz, Paul Grass, Josh Ofatz & Erin Buchanan from San Francisco, Ca. There were many other great catches of four to eight marlin in day, just not enough room to include them all here. Eighty one percent of our boats caught billfish this week resulting in a total catch of 156, breaking down into 147 striped marlin, 6 blue marlin & 3 sailfish.
143 LB TUNA ON ADRIANA!
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches were up to sixty four percent this week & should continue to climb over the next couple of weeks. Boats usually caught between one and five; Speedwell was the exception with eight for Cedric Lewis & family from Maryland. Weights on the dorado were 10 to 40 lbs. with assorted lures working over a wide area.  Our total dorado count was 77 fish.  Yellow fin tuna catches were fantastic when they were found with boats easily loading up on twenty plus football size fish. One exception was Pisces Adriana who had Tye & Camber Bohlen aboard from Afghanistan, when they landed a 141 lb. large tuna as well as twenty other smaller fish, at the 11.50 spot. Most of the tuna this week though was caught in the San Jaime area, with trusty cedar plus the most effective way to get a hook up.  Forty one percent of our charters caught tuna giving us a total of 385 fish. We had several wahoo up to 40 lb. caught in diverse areas and the only other fish we caught were skipjacks both black & white closer to shore.
LOCATION: 95 spot on the Cortez to San Jaime.
WEATHER: We had some light rain on Monday morning which was local and not associated with tropical weather, and then skies turned blue with sunny hot weather all week; calm seas.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 84 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, orange & black, green & yellow, cedar plugs

Fish Report - It's GRrrrrreat!

AUGUST 3RD TO 10TH 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 100%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 91%, Dorado 73%, Tuna 35%, Small Game 20%

BILLFISH: We just want the whole world to know how fantastic fishing is in Baja California Sur right now, not just Cabo, but the East Cape and La Paz too. Surely this is the best fishery in the world; year round catches incredible numbers of game fish, perfect weather and some of the best crews on the planet. We would be hard pressed to remember a slow week in 2013. This period was no exception with a perfect score; every boat out caught fish.  This week we had a great catches of striped marlin and quite a few sailfish, but as well as releasing a billfish or two, or more, boats loaded up on dorado and tuna, so had plenty of eating fish to bring back. We had some exceptional catches such as those aboard Pisces Tracy Ann on August 6th for the Arriazola family from Houston, Texas. They had amazing day fishing over a wide area starting out three miles off of Land’s End and ending up twenty five miles out. The day started off well when they caught an approximately 250 lb. blue marlin, followed by a striped marlin & sailfish, before heading out to the tuna where they managed to land five football size fish. The blue marlin took a petrolero lure.  On August 3rd Pisces 70 ft. Queenship, Petrolero had a fabulous day for Steve Poe & friends from Dublin, California, releasing six striped marlin up to 120 lbs. & landing five dorados & six white skipjacks (the kind you can eat). Another hot boat this week was Pisces Adriana with six marlin nine miles off of the lighthouse for David Howie, from Lincoln, California.  A nice mixed day was had by Pisces La Brisa August 7th with two striped marlin & a sailfish released, two tuna, three dorado & a wahoo for Richard Fair and family from Oklahoma City. Ninety one percent of our boats caught billfish this week giving us a total of 110 fish, breaking down into 100 striped marlin, 8 sailfish & 2 blue marlin.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches are definitely starting to climb, with seventy three percent of our charters catching between one and eight fish. Pisces Ruthless seemed to have a knack for finding this species, with several days of half a dozen or more caught. One of the better days for this boat was with James Davis from Brington, MI aboard who caught eight and released one striped marlin as well. Our total catch was of 157 fish. Yellow fin tuna started to show up in numbers towards the end of the week, with big schools found at San Jaime on the Pacific & at the Herradura.  Again Ruthless was one of the top boats; on August 9th they had Dan Steren & friends aboard from California, they caught twenty five tuna up to 25 lbs., plus a 40 lb. wahoo, a small dorado and also released a striped marlin  - how about that for a fun day? Thirty five percent of our boats caught tuna with catches of one to twenty plus fish in the 15 to 30 lb. class. Our total tuna count was 173 fish. Nice to see some consistency on wahoo this week though when caught it was always a single fish and no bigger than 50 lbs. – a prized catch, always make sure you take this fish with you, even if you don’t want to take it home have some cooked during your stay in Cabo. This is one if not the best eating fish there is. Inshore and from the surf, roosterfish could be caught in the 20 to 40 lb. category as well as some cubera snapper, jack crevalle and both black and white skipjack. Remember the white on is the good eating kind, the black should be released.

WEATHER: August 4th we had an early morning squall come through Cabo, causing the Port Captain to close the port, but boats has already left and were conveniently out of radio range... basically it was some thunder & lightening, a much needed light rain and choppy seas for about an hour. The rest of this period we had pretty smooth seas and clear skies, with hardly any humidity.
LOCATION:  We fished almost the full gamut of our day range this week, from Destiladeras on the Cortez to San Jaime on the Pacific with boats three to twenty five miles offshore.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 83 F
BEST LURES; Live bait for striped marlin & sailfish, petrolero for blue marlin, cedar plugs for tuna, green colored lures for dorado

Amazing!

Amazing days - fishing has been red hot all year, but yesterday was particularly good for a couple of the boats - this must be a hat trick for TRACY ANN, 1 blue marlin, 1 striped marlin, 1 sailfish & 5 tuna for the Arriazola family from Houston. LA BRISA 2 striped marlin, 1 sailfish, 1 dorado, 15 tuna for Brad Smith & friends from Highland California - if this is not good fishing I don't know what is. GOOD JOB PISCES CREWS.

South African Anglers Fish in Cabo

We recently met a group from South Africa, two couples, with one couple that have relocated to Vancouver Island, Canada and the other couple still living in South Africa. They came into the Pisces office and seeing as we were fully booked we recommend them to fish with Yoyo on Fish On, (we use this captain as overflow when we are full) they had a fantastic time & caught three marlin and three dorado. We suggested they have their catch prepared at Captain Tony's next to our office and this is what they wrote " We have also had the best time at Capt. Tony's - been there pretty much every day this week!  The food and atmosphere are amazing and we will miss our daily excursion for sure when we go back to Canada tomorrow. Thanks again for your hospitality. Cabo really is a bit of heaven on earth!"
Adri Pretorius, shown below, was so enamored of Cabo she said she wants to move here.

GIRLS FISHING TRIP!

The crew look happy and why not, they hosted this group of lovely ladies aboard Tracy Ann on August 1st -  Michelle Pavlik, Kelly Jones, Sarah Mayer and Kala Brendon are from Houston and Katy, Texas caught and released three striped marlin and boated these three dorado ranging from 15 to 40 lbs. Well done girls!

Weekly Round Up

July 27th to August 2nd, 2013

Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 99%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 97%, Dorado 54%, Tuna 24%

BILLFISH: We are having a fantastic summer with billfish thick off of the Cabo coast. Once the moon waned we saw high marlin numbers come back for many boats. Best one day today was for Pisces Tracy Ann with twelve striped marlin released at Punta Gorda for Frank & Joseph Ianno from Staten Island, New York – that’s a lot of fish for two guys. This same day, July 27th, Pisces La Brisa managed to release eight marlin in the 100 to 130 lb. range for Paul Stoakes, Jay Moroso & Brent Crifton from Orange, California. Cabolero equaled this catch with eight marlin too for a group from Caldwell, Texas headed up by Gene Chemelari. One of the most spectacular catches was aboard Great Escape Jr by Doug Schwindt, Robert Coleman & Joseph Vlatner; they caught and released two blue marlin in the 300-400 lb. class at the Carbrillo sea mount as well as landing eight tuna and a dorado – now that’s a great day…To add to the mix of blue & striped marlin, sailfish catches increased. Pisces Valerie released three up to 70 lbs. as well as a striped marlin and a dorado for William & Lisa Molfetto from Sugarland, Texas. Pisces C Rod also had three sailfish & a striped marlin, but did even better by adding a dorado, two tuna & a jack crevalle for Kevin Sihey & Charlie Gillerang from Los Angeles. Pisces Ruthless was top boat on August 1st for Kevin Chiles from Natalia, Texas with three sailfish, two striped marlin and two dorado. Practically every boat out this week caught billfish giving us a catch rate of ninety seven percent. Pisces anglers caught 152 striped marlin, 15 sailfish and 2 blue marlin, all but two fish were released.

OTHER SPECIES: You know summer is here when you start to see the dorado numbers creep up and that’s what they did this week as fifty four percent of charters caught fish up to 50 lbs. Instead of the usual one or two fish, we saw boats catching four and five in a day, giving anglers some great fish to have cooked here or to take home.  Our total dorado count was 69 fish. Tuna catches dropped slightly but then most boats weren’t risking a long ride out for an unsure result and preferred to go for the more sure billfish. When tuna were caught it was when they were a little closer. La Brisa took a 35 mile ride out on August 1st and caught eleven tuna up to 25 lbs., a 30 lb. dorado and released a striped marlin for Nate Pugh from Pasadena, Ca. Twenty four percent of our boats caught tuna giving us a total of 54 fish. Listo was the only boat to catch a wahoo for us, actually on a half day charter, with the weight at just above 40 lbs.  Inshore roosterfish could be found, along with a few jack crevalle, white skipjacks and the odd stray marlin.
WEATHER: Great, mostly clear skies, days are hot but nights bearable even without a.c – seas moderate to calm.
LOCATION: Mixed –Punta Gorda. 95 spot, Chileno, 3 miles off of Land’s End, San Jaime, Santa Maria, Old Lighthouse – Pacific and Sea of Cortez.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 83 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, green/yellow lures, cedar plugs
