SWORDFISH

SWORDFISH- this prized catch was taken by Eddie Penn from Houston, Texas aboard Pisces Rebecca, one of the most sought after catches of fisherman. Unlike other locations where night fishing is the only way to find this elusive billfish, we catch swordfish during the daytime, when they are up sunning themselves on the surface. The fish weighed 172 lbs (on our new certified scale) and took the second live caballito cast to it 30 miles outside the 120 spot. As if this wasn't enough Ashley Corrales who was on board with Eddie, released a striped marlin and they caught 7 tuna. Let us know if you have every caught a broadbill swordfish, it would be interesting to know how many of our fans have every fought or landed one.

EDDIE YOU ARE KILLING US, HOW ABOUT A SMILE?

Best Fishing Report of the Year!

June 29th to July 5th, 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 99%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 95%, Dorado 28%, Tuna 28%, Small Game 8%

BILLFISH: This has been the best week of the year so far for fishing; “wow!” is all we can say and even we, used to the great Cabo fishery, are astounded at how good the catches have been. Our total marlin catch this week was 344 fish – all but two were released. Not only that Pisces Speedwell fought a 500 lb. blue marlin for four hours before it finally broke off. As we close out our week, Pisces Rebecca has a swordfish hooked up also. Usually a catch of three marlin would be worthy of mention in the weekly report, but this period the fishing was so good that it took a catch of eight marlin or more to get a special mention – not taking away from all the other great catches. The big plus this week was the appearance of schools of yellow fin tuna, so a catch of two or three marlin, plus several tuna was a distinct possibility. Top marlin day was after the threat of Hurricane Cosme, when the port was fully re-opened, June 29th. This day saw Pisces Listo release 16 marlin and catch 1 dorado for Keith Rhodes, participating in the Stars & Stripes Tournament. This same day Pisces Bill Collector and released 10 marlin for John Manzi, whilst Great Escape had 9, Great Escape Jr and Ruthless had 8 stripers each. Pisces Rebecca did very well this week releasing 9 striped marlin and catching 3 tuna and 1 doardo for Travis Prudhomme & Kyle Boultinghouse from Texas on July 1st, before going on to release 8 marlin for David Lavern from Houston, on July 5th, who also caught 5 tuna at the 11.50 spot.  Pisces Valerie had an 8 marlin day for Rob & Laurie Hohos Brad & Patricia Summer & Kevin & Audrey Hall, all from Texas – with the marlin taking live caballito. Fishing was from the 95 spot to Destiladeras, with live bait and frozen ballyhoo accounting for the majority of catches. Ninety five percent of our boats caught billfish this week, breaking down into 344 striped marlin, 1 sailfish and 1 blue marlin lost.

OTHER SPECIES: July 4th was when the yellow fin tuna put in an appearance for few days when boats regularly caught between 8 and 25 footballs size fish outside the 11.50 spot. Top tuna boat was Pisces Rebecca with a total of 30 at the 120 spot, plus two striped marlin for Iman Dolatshahi & friends from Columbia, Maryland. The bite was hot for a couple of days, before the schools moved on and out of range, but that doesn’t mean there are more right behind them. Pisces boats caught a total of 212 yellow fin tuna, for twenty eight percent of our charters – showing the catches per boat were high in quantity. The same percentage of boats caught dorado, the difference being that when found the catches were seldom more than one or two fish, but they were generally good size fish in the 20 to 50 lb. class. Pisces Tracy Ann had a very nice 55 lb. dorado for Devon, who is from San Antonio, Texas. Because our boats were concentrating offshore, we sent just a few pangas inshore, though there was not much action as the surf was stirred up after the big swells. They did catch a few sierra, bonita, jack crevalle & released baby hammerhead and roosterfish.
LOCATION: Sea of Cortez, 95 spot to Destiladeras.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Skies clear, seas on the rough side close to port but smoother once you got offshore.
AVERAGE WATE TEMP: 75 F
BEST LURES: Live caballito or mackerel, frozen ballyhoo, cedar plugs for tuna, caballito & green/yellow lures for dorado.

INCREDIBLE FISHING IN CABO SAN LUCAS

We have often said it and we will say it again, the hottest fishing is at the hottest time of year.....SUMMER. Where do we begin, well how about one of the best catches from today. Patrick Steele from Brea California out on our new addition "Speedwell" fought a 500 lb marlin for four hours, before the hefty fish broke off and got away. Just as we predicted last week - that we would be seeing our first blue marlin around this time.  We are seeing amazing catches of striped marlin - some boats such as Pisces Valerie, releasing up to 8 in a day and HUGE dorado too, plus football size tuna. It's out of control  here!

Here's the Fish Report

JUNE 22ND to 27th, 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 84%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 61%, Dorado 20%, Tuna 14%, Small Game 5%

PASCAL ROMMELAERE & CHRISTIAN DOORNAERT, CERTAINY TRAVELLED A LONG WAY TO CATCH THEIR MARLIN BUT WORTH IT , AS SHOWN BY THE FLAGS FLOWN ABOARD LA BRISA. THESE GUYS ARE FROM BELGIUM

BILLFISH: This week was bit on the up and down side, but that was due to the seas rather than the fishing. With hurricane Cosme to the south of us, there was no immediate threat to the Los Cabos area as it spun westward into the Pacific, but it did cause some very big seas, which led to the port being closed partially for a couple of days. The large swells continued for several days causing a number of anglers to get sea-sick and asking to return to port. Those that persevered though usually had a successful day and at the close of this report, fishing was as good if not better as it was a few weeks ago with boats releasing record numbers of striped marlin. The Stars and Stripes Charity tournament which is the classiest and most philanthropic tournament held in Cabo, took place this Friday and Saturday and despite bumpy seas the first day, turned in record numbers of marlin caught and released, 299 in fact the best in the history of the 17 year old tournament.  Some of the better catches this week were aboard Pisces C Rod with five striped marlin released for Phong & Lisa Voung from Texas who were fishing with Oli & Carlos Vicente on June 27th. This same day both La Brisa and Tracy Ann released four marlin each between the Herradura and 11.50 spot – with the boats using live mackerel, live caballito, frozen ballyhoo and guacamayo lures.  Pisces Tracy Ann had experienced a quadruple marlin catch the day before at the 95 spot, closer to Cabo, for Sawley, Kristi and Sawley Jr Wilde form Gillette, Wyoming.  Frank & Chris Fabiani from Anaheim California fished aboard Pisces Rebecca and were our top anglers on June 22nd, with four marlin released. Pisces anglers caught a total of 55 striped marlin this week, all but one released.

SARAH FALCONA & MARTIN SUMMERFORD, FROM BENOWA, OLD AUSTRALIA, CAUGHT THIS LARGE MALE DORADO ABOARD GREAT ESCAPE JR.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches are beginning to become more regular, with twenty percent of boats hooking up to fish in the 15 to 48 lb. class, however, it was rare to catch more than one and all were hooked whilst trolling for marlin. After the two month absence of yellowfin tuna, Pisces Cabolero found them outside the 95 spot and managed to catch eighteen football size fish plus a dorado for Mark Baziak and friends. Cabolero however, was the only boat to have any success for this species, except for single small one aboard Ruthless. Inshore there were a few jack crevalles and rooster fish, but otherwise the shoreline was too rough to fish.
LOCATION: Punta Gorda, Destiladeras, 11.50 spot, 95 spot, Herradura, Cabrillo sea mount.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Skies mostly clear, humid and hot due to hurricane to the south, rough seas up until the end of the week.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73-76F
BEST LURES: Live mackerel, caballito, ballyhoo, green/orange/yellow lures.

We Love This Photo

Why do we love  it? The looks on the anglers faces, happy, really happy and who wouldn't be happy with those two huge, beautiful dorado - one of the best eating fish in the ocean.
Shown here are Andrew Tetlew & Jason Furrow, from Phoenix, Arizona along with Brent Skonick & Bill Iverson from Issaquah, Washington and of course famous captain Julio Castro (far left) and his son Abram who went out a...s deckhand. These guys released four striped marlin and caught four dorado, with the two largest ones shown here. What a fantastic day! You know summer is actually one of the best times to be fishing in Cabo, there is such a variety of fish available.

Great Numbers This Week

JUNE 15th to 21st, 2013

Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 98%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 97%, Dorado 11%, Small Game 11%
TEXANS JUST SEEM TO HAVE WHAT IT TAKES, HERE A GROUP ABOARD FROM SAN ANTONIO HAD THREE STRIPED MARLIN, TWO SAILFISH AND TWO DORADO
BILLFISH: The Cabo legend continues, at this moment in time we are living up to our name of Marlin Capital of the World – with a near perfect catch rate on striped marlin for every boat. The reason it was not perfect was not due to the fish or crews, but rather on some anglers that got sea-sick and asked to come back and to another group that opted to fish a half day against our recommendation. At one stage this week, we had boats routinely releasing four or more marlin, plus sailfish and dorado. Top on day total was for Jens Laub and Michelle Saitiro from Germany, who released eleven striped marlin on June 16th aboard Pisces Tracy An at Punta Gorda – this couple ended up with a total of twenty three marlin for three days fishing with us – pretty impressive.  Next day out we had two high scoring boats lead by Pisces Valerie with ten marlin released  by Lori Jaffe, Michael Young and Jameson Eckhardt, a little close at the 11.50 spot aboard Pisces Valerie. Not far behind this day was Pisces Rebecca with nine marlin between 100 and 140 lbs released plus a dorado in the Punta Gorda area for Christian Sprich, Todd Matousheik and Sung Han from St. Louis Missouri. This same day saw Great Escape Jr release six on live caballito for Bill & Lisa Hart, Ernest & Michelle Valle, from Texas who also boated a nice 45 lb dorado that took a red and black lure. On June 20th Pisces Bill Collector was the top marlin boat with eight released up to 130 lbs for Roland Boney, Sr. and Jr. from Jacksonville Florida who fished with live bait at Chileno and off of San Jose.  We had several notable catches this same day such as Pisces Valerie with six marlin plus five dorado for the Mills family from McKinney, Texas. Pisces La Brisa had a fabulous day with three striped marlin, two sailfish and two dorado, the larger of which weighed 50 lbs, for Randolph & Linda Marceau fishing with John & Christie Hinkebeinfrom San Antonio, Texas. This same day Rebecca caught five striped marlin and two sailfish at Destialderas for Duane Davis who is from you guessed it…..Texas (Dallas). Pisces Cabolero is worthy of mention, for releasing six marlin for Bryan Humphrey and friends from Orange County, California. As we close this report we have a big moon which may slow fishing  little, however, the last two full moons did not show a negative effect on fishing. Pisces anglers caught a total of 194 striped marlin and 10 sailfish this week – all but four marlin were released.
STARTING TO SEE SOME BIGGER DORADO, THIS WAS 28 LBS, BUT SOME WERE UP TO 50 LBS THIS WEEK.
OTHER SPECIES:  With the marlin fishing so good boats concentrated on getting anglers hooked up to big game and other catches were not that common. That said we did see an increase on dorado catches with some boats managing to boat five in the 20 to 50 lb class. The dorado were found when looking for marlin, trolling the grounds  where marlin were with lures.  Eleven percent of our vessels caught dorado this week. Roosterfish catches remained steady but we caught more inshore at Punta Gorda, as bonus catches for boats that ran that way looking for marlin, than on the Pacific which remains considerably cooler. Just one small stray yellow fin tuna was caught as well as a few sierra and jack crevalle along with some nice sized yellow tail. Two nice wahoo were taken in the 30 to 50 lb class.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear skies, sunny, seas were up and down, calm some days and on the rough side others, when wind came down from the Pacific.
LOCATION:  Cortez side, fishing was as close as Chileno on some days and as far away as Destiladeras on others. Punta Gorda overall was the best spot.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 76- 82 F
BEST LURES: Live caballito, frozen ballyhoo, red and black, green lures.

Yellow Tail in June?

So does anybody have any idea of why we are still catching yellow tail so late in the year? Who knows, but no complaints here - look at these two beauties caught aboard Pisces Attitude Adjustment. These are one of the best eating fish around. Congratulation Captain Edgar (shown on right).

Probably Our Most Loyal Client

Probably our most loyal client.....Creighton Lawhead has been fishing with Pisces almost since we began - since we were all young and had no gray hair and since many of the crews were skinny and single. This is what Creighton had to say after his last trip about fishing with us “I have been blessed to have had the opportunity over the past 30 years to fish the waters off of Cabo (both the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez) and have caught and released 2 sailfish, one black marlin, one blue marlin and 87 striped marlin, and have caught numerous dorado, tuna and a couple wahoo. I have fished exclusively with Pisces and will continue to do so for as long as I can hold a rod and bring a fish to leader. I have fished with Capt. Julio Castro for the past 28 years and consider him a friend. I marvel at his demonstrated ability to consistently, time after time, find fish. On May 29th of this year, while aboard the Tracy Ann, I caught and released 4 striped marlin and caught a dorado (which family and friends enjoyed that evening for dinner), and my brother Kimber (from Wheeling, WV) also caught and released 4 striped marlin and caught a large bull dorado. Eight striped marlin and two dorado – this was the best day I have ever experienced sportfishing! Thanks Pisces and Julio (and Martin Sr. and Jr.) for making May 29th a day my brother and I will always remember.” THANK YOU CREIGHTON - we will be awarding you two days free fishing next time you come down, as a small thank you for all the years.

Are We Having a Repeat of November 2008?

Are we having a repeat of November 2008? Maybe too early to tell but the marlin fishing is red hot. Yesterday Pisces caught 46 striped marlin, with the top boat Pisces Valerie with ten caught. Not only that but there are other large gamefish out there. Pisces Listo released four striped marlin but also got a 48 lb dorado and 30 lb wahoo for Matthew & Monica Demonte from New York.
FOUR MARLIN RELEASED, PLUS A 48 LB DORADO AND A 30 LB WAHOO FOR THESE NEW YORK ANGLERS
