MARLIN: We are sooooo happy to finally have some stable striped marlin catches and in fact they were our top catch this week.  Pisces Rebecca lead the way with four marlin up to 140 LBS and a pilot shark released on May 7th for Michael Francesconi and party from Georgia at the 11.50 spot.  Michael’s friends were out on Tracy Ann the same day and managed to release three marlin in the same area.  It’s easy to see why Rebecca is one of our top boats, as they again released four marlin up to 170 LBS on May 9th for anglers Charlie Piermarini, Jack Piermarini and Bob James – all on live bait at the 11.50 spot.  Tracy Ann had another triple header day on May 11th for Jason and Christy White from Colorado, once again the 11.50 spot was the place and caballito the bait.  Back to the 31 ft. Bertram Rebecca they had an amazing day for Trey Simon, Kristi Istre Ricky & Angie Chavez from Texas, with three striped marlin up to 160 LBS and FIVE pilot sharks up to 120 LBS, all released – thank you.  The Engel families, fellow Texans, were out on Valerie the same day and were pleased to release three marlin up to 140 LBS.  Fifty two percent of our charters caught marlin this week with many have more than one fish, giving us a total catch of 54 fish, with all but two released.  Our overall catch rate was 80% for all species, though we noted that those anglers that opted for a half day had significantly lower catch rates – moral of the story; take a full day.

OTHER SPECIES:  So plentiful are sharks right now that they almost need a dedicated section, of course the shark ban is in place until July 31st, but that doesn’t stop you from catching and releasing them.  This week we had pilot sharks – local name but probably silky or bronze whalers, a blue shark and threshers. Shambala our 60 FT Hatteras caught three thresher sharks up to 180 LBS as well as a pilot shark for Maarten Durent and friends from New Zealand.  Overall thirty nine percent of our charters caught sharks with a total of 30 caught and released.  It was nice to actually see some dorado this week, not many, but at least a start. Ruthless out on a half day managed to catch six up to 18 LBS eight miles out from the Lighthouse.  Just five percent of charters found dorado.  Tuna catches began to show this week as well with seven percent of boats managing to hook a few, most were school size fish, though Bill Collector was the exception with a 75 LB tuna caught by Art Muff from New Jersey, who was also very fortunate to release two striped marlin and a jack crevalle.  There is still small stuff available in shore but with the big game catches vastly improved not many boats tried for these species unless they were on half days, as there wasn’t enough time on these shorter trips to get to the marlin grounds and back.  Nine percent of our boats caught a mix of skipjacks, sheephead, triggerfish, lady fish and grouper.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report April 30th to May 6th, 2016

BILLFISH:  We’re back!  Finally after months of small game fishing we saw a return this week to the big stuff.  We were pleased to see more consistent billfish catches and even multiple marlin catches for some boats.  At the start of the week the hot boat was the Hot Rod as they released three striped marlin up to 150 LBS and SIX pilot sharks up to 130 LBS all caught at the 11.50 spot by Kevin Bremer, James Snyder, Pamela Snyder, Jesse Jernigan & Sam Jernigan – a pretty busy days for these lucky anglers.  Our 35 ft. Cabo Listo celebrated 5 de Mayo in style as they also released three striped marlin and released a large pilot shark for a group of Mexican anglers from Monterey, mainland Mexico.  Another boat with more than one marlin was Pisces 31ft Bertram La Brisa; they released two striped marlin at the 11.50 spot for the Collins and Lancers from Maryland, who also did well to release an 180 LB pilot shark and a 110 LB thresher shark.  Forty nine percent of our charters caught marlin this week, not fantastic, but definitely on the road to recovery with a total of 23 marlin released this week.

OTHER SPECIES:  The killing of sharks’ ban that runs from May 1st to July 31st went into to effect this week and it’s like somebody told them they were safe as they showed up by the dozen.  Anglers are allowed to catch and release them during this period but cannot kill them or bring a dead shark back to the dock.  Pisces Tracy Ann released a total of SIX pilot sharks, a large 180 LB thresher shark and a striped marlin for 10 year old Bentley Willcott who was on a special birthday trip to Cabo with his dad Matthew from Texas. Henry & Kaitlin Troutner from Virginia had a great time battling three thresher sharks up to 180 LBS and a pilot shark, all caught on live caballito.  Hot Rod made the fishing report a second time for having the most variety of sharks with a thresher, a pilot and mako shark, as well as a striped marlin released for the Sutton family from California.  Seventy three percent of our charters caught sharks this week giving a total of 49 sharks released.  Just a couple of boats caught dorado and tuna catches were on a par – all small fish.  Small game catches continued throughout the week but to a lesser degree with forty six percent of boats catching grouper, ladyfish, triggerfish, babosas, sheephead, skipjacks, roosterfish and one solitary wahoo that was around 40 LBS.

LOCATION: Marlin and shark were caught in the Sea of Cortez between Santa Maria and the 11.50 spot.  Smaller game were on the Pacific at Migrino.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy, windy on the Pacific, lighter winds on the Cortez side.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report April 23rd to 29th 2016

Bentley caught his 1st Marlin ever aboard our Tracy Ann. In 2 fishing trips our little friend and his dad Matthew released 1 striped marlin and 9 sharks (Pilot & Thresher shark)!

 
BILLFISH: Marlin catches increased this week, but not by much. Almost all marlin caught this week were caught this Friday, April 29th, and all out at the 11:50 Spot.  Almost every boat that headed out that way caught at least one marlin, with the Ruthless and Hot Rod catching 3 each.  David Sandoval and friends from Austin, Texas, the anglers aboard the Ruthless, also landed two Pilot sharks that averaged around 120lbs, which they released along with their marlins.
 
Keith Johnson from Georgia had a busy day out on the Bill Collector on Wednesday. The crew headed out to Punta Gorda and hit the jackpot, catching 1 small striped marlin, 1 pilot shark, 7 skipjacks and 1 amberjack.  All fish were caught on caballito bait. The Knot Workin was also one of the lucky few to not only catch the marlin they were looking for, but also land the only yellowfin tuna caught this week.  They caught the 25 lb. tuna along with a small grouper a few miles out from Las Viudas.  Pisces boats caught a total of 20 striped marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES: Shark and small game fish have remained the majority caught this week once again.  The Howards and Mr. Dailey, anglers from Washington who fished aboard the Andrea got their daily work out with their catch, a total of 37 fish, mostly triggerfish and ladyfish, as well as a small grouper.  All their catches were found out of Migriño, on caballito and ballyhoo bait. 
Another busy day was for the Ruthless on Monday, with anglers Michael and Jill Steinbacher reeling in 12 triggerfish, 8 groupers and 5 ladyfish, also out of Migriño.
 
The panga 3 Amigos decided to stay close to shore and found themselves catching 2 sierras, 1 roosterfish and 1 jack crevelle, all out from the Old Lighthouse.
 
We have also been hearing about rising tuna and wahoo bite out from Medanos in San Jose.  Fisherman from over that way have been starting to see and catch wahoo and see schools of tuna, so we are hoping to see more catches of both of these next week.  For now, only two wahoo were caught this week, one aboard the Rebecca, caught on green/black lure at Medanos and the other caught aboard the Flora T on caballito bait, both weighed around 20-25 lbs.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Mostly clear skies, with seas a little choppy and wind coming up in the afternoons.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report April 9th to 15th 2016

BILLFISH:  Marlin numbers were up slightly from last week, but are still nowhere as good as we would like them to be.  We checked last years’ fish report and saw that it was pretty much the same as this year.  The weather is still pretty cold for this time of year and it has been rather windy on the Pacific side, which could be a contributing factor.  Captain Orlando out on his 28 ft. Andrea started out the week well, as he heading to the 11.50 spot and Punta Gorda with Andres Villafante and friends from Mexico on board; they were very fortunate to release two striped marlin, one a baby at 40 LBS and the other perhaps it’s daddy at 140 LBS.  They also caught and released a 90 LB pilot shark on live caballito.  This same day Bill Collector had an action packed day, fishing a little further up in the Sea of Cortez at Destiladeras with our very own Melissa Espino and friends on board.  They were able to release a striped marlin, hammerhead shark snapper and couple of triggerfish.  We were surprised to see a couple of early season sailfish, but then again water is warmer than normal. Adam Padgett released a nice 75 LB sailfish twenty five mile out from San Jose aboard Pisces Listo.  On April 11th the crew of the Tracy Ann were able to show off their marlin skills and were able to release a couple of striped marlin that were estimated at 130 & 160 LBS at the 11.50 spot from New Jersey anglers the Moore family.  Another boat that had a two marlin day was Andrea for David Mays, who got both of his fish also at the 11.50 spot on live bait.  There were plenty of boats that spotted marlin but just could not get a hook up. Pisces anglers caught a total of 19 billfish this week; all but one released.

OTHER SPECIES:  Where the marlin lacked, the smaller game took up the slack with multiple catches possible of a variety of fish in a day.  Let’s take the Andrea with the Zelms from Arizona aboard: they released a large 220 LB hammerhead shark, and caught a sheephead, 6 ladyfish, 2 grouper, 3 triggerfish and 2 pintos.  Or Tracy Ann fishing at Migrino on the Pacific for the Murray party; they caught 12 grouper, 10 babosas, 2 sheephead, 6 red snapper, 1 ladyfish, 2 mulejinos and 1 sea bass in other words a total of 35 fish on a day trip.  One of the most enviable catches was aboard Hot Rod who caught two wahoo for John Pritchard.  There were some tuna catches this week but the fish tended to be small at no more than 15 LBS and catches of up to eight fish, usually at San Jaime.  A couple of small dorado were also caught.  To summarize plentiful catches of grouper, triggerfish, ladyfish, some snappers, sierra, skipjacks, yellowtail and sharks.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 19th to 25th 2016

We are seeing more Marlins as long as we are moving forward to April and Striped Marlin peak season; some of the Stripers are starting to be spotted over the Sea of Cortes such as Chileno and the 95 fishing spot, even though the moon waxed in the middle of the week we had good action. Pisces 42ft “Yahoo” released a Striped Marlin using mackerel as live bait, estimated weight 130 lb. at Pozo Cota  for John & Ryan Hurst, Julie Keller and Rachel Gunderson visiting from Reno, Nevada. Pisces 31ft “Tiburon” got tight lines with a Striped Marlin (130 lb.)  for Gary Muisuf's group  and  Pisces 35ft “Listo” commanded by Captain Benito made the day for the Smith's  Family from British Columbia, Ca. releasing a Striped Marlin (130 lb.) in the same spot Pozo Cota, Pacific side. With consisting numbers in previous reports “Hot Rod” 42ft vessel released three Striped Marlins more outside of La Bomba, estimated weight 100, 130, 150 lbs.  John III, James, and John Jr. Mattingly from Granite City, Illinois were excited!. “Yahoo” 42ft Pisces gave the fight with another Striped Marlin! (130lb.) and  twelve Trigger fish at Cerro de Arena and  Pozo Cota for Susan Reif and William Tomrose from Pen Valley, California. Pisces 35ft “Knot Workin”vessel got tight lines for a Striped Marlin and three Yellow Tails (10-25 lbs.) at San Cristobal and Margaritas for Eduardo Roldan's group visiting from Mexico City.  Pisces 35ft “Valerie” had a great day releasing a Striped Marlin at Migriño (140lb.) twelve Lady Fish, twelve Babosas and four Groupers (6- 8 lbs.)  Good action for Mark Holmes, Scott Selby, Kevin Thil, John Renner and Phillip Barbosa from Atlanta, Georgia. Pisces 42ft“Yahoo” one more time!, released another Striped Marlin (140 lb.), eleven Trigger Fish and Skip Jack at Faro Viejo from Jim Farr, Eileen Adams, Dan Morgan and Lynne Adams from San Antonio, Texas. Pisces 28ft “Andrea” released two Striped Marlins (130 lbs.) outside of Chileno and the 95 spot for Steve Lanser, Joe Lanser, Hong Nguyen, John Lanser. Pisces 31ft “Tracy Ann” got another Marlin at the 95 spot with live bait for Thomas, Thomas Jr. and Gregory Madsen from Minnesota. Twenty three percent of Pisces anglers released a total of 16 Striped Marlin all Marlin were successfully released.

Yellow Tails made the fun to young family Roldán Acosta and friends visiting from Mexico City, aboard the 35ft “Knot Working” with Captain Tito.

OTHER SPECIES: Yellow fin tuna and Dorado still in slow numbers however Pisces 32ft “Bill Collector” brought three Yellow Fin Tunas  (22lbs.) and released a Pilot shark at San Jaime for Derek, McKenzie Kline and Cameron Hutchnes from Reno, Nevada.  On March 19th “Bill Collector” ran again at San Jaime and got nine Tunas and another Pilot shark successfully released for Joe, Victoria Barnes from Alberta, Canada and on March 21s one Dorado and Yellow Fin Tuna (20lbs.) for Kirk and Graham Baker from Dallas, Tx. Pisces 31ft “La Brisa” reeled a 20 lb. Wahoo at La Antena for Ida  Gustavson's  group from Colorado. As to bottom fishing, this still booms in different fishing areas over the Pacific side:  Pisces 28ft “Adriana” got twelve Groupers (15 lbs.) three Estacudos, eight Lady Fish and one Scorpion fish for Gino & Nicolas Gerbasi from Chicago, Ilinois. Pisces 28ft “Andrea” got a 25lb. Yellow Tail, two Sheepheads (15 lbs.)  Red Snappers, four Babosas using bait chunks at Gaspareño for James Vaughan, William Carlisle and Samuel Gore visiting from Alaska. Pisces 31ft “Cabolero” did its magic  releasing two Jack Crevelles, two Roosters and one Spanish Mackerel estimated weight 15-20 lbs. Pisces 31ft “Ruthless”  got one Red Snapper, two Groupers (20 lbs.), good size Sea Bass (30 lb.)  and six Trigger fish for Randy Smith's family, visiting from Tennessee.
Ten percent of our Pisces Anglers brought 23 Yellow Fin Tunas and one Dorado, The 65% percent with an incredible variety of species: Triggerfish, Amber Jack, Yellow Tail, Ladyfish, Groupers, Spanish mackerel, Rooster, Red Snapper, Sea Bass, Jack Crevelle, Sheephead, Mojarra, Babosas and Scorpio fish.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report 27 February to 1 March 2016

We start this week with an off season Blue Marlin spotted 27 miles over on the Pacific side, guided by Captain Ricardo Escamilla on Pisces 42ft “Yahoo”,  Tony Foth from Iowa and his friends were in search of Yellow fin tuna, when they spotted on the horizon Marlin on the surface.  Thinking it was a Striped, the crew set up a 40 lbs. test line to get it cast.  What was their surprise when they hooked a 180 lb Blue Marlin!  Pisces 31ft “Ruthless” vessel released the first Striped Marlin of the week over the Pedregal area, estimated weight 120lbs, good fun for Todd, Cindy Fink and Tonda, Steve Devault visiting from Saginaw, Michigan.  Pisces “C Rod” 38ft with Captain Abel spotted a Striped Marlin, over the Pacific in the 180 spot for Rob Standley's group from Zionville, Indiana.  On February 28th again the “C Rod” got tight lines for Steve Olmsted, John Foss, Michael Sigel, and Michael Dutton visiting from Minnesota releasing two Striped Marlin, using Caballito as live bait.  Pisces “Adriana” 28ft ran to the Old Light House and spot Striped Marlin for Michael and Amanda Carter visiting from Osseo, Minnesota.  Our “Tracy Ann” 31ft Pisces adds one more to this week, using the small sardine as live bait for the Bermel & Fenske Group releasing a Striped Marlin and bringing some Trigger fish as well.  Pisces 35ft “Valerie” released a Striped Marlin at el Faro for Doc, Diane Gover & Stephen, Patsy Holdefer visiting from Tennessee.  “Speedwell” 38ft Pisces with Captain “Piranha” and guests from Mexico's State Gabriel and Magally Sordo ran fifteen miles to the 220 spot for a Striped Marlin lured with caballito, being successfully released and a Pilot shark estimated weight 70 lbs.  “Hot Rod” Pisces 42ft vessel got tight lines for three Striped marlin at Los Arcos for Norm, Debbie, Danielle Wolfe and Brandon Satchwell, visiting from Alberta, Canada.  Good Job! Finally “La Brisa” our 31ft Bertram with Ray Winkler captain released a 150lbs. Marlin at Los Arcos for Neil Corella and June Robbins visiting from Florida.  Lots of action for billfish this week, all Billfish were successfully released. Thirty percent of the Pisces Anglers released 16 billfish, consisting in 15 Striped and 1 Blue Marlin.

Mike McCoy from Iowa had a fun day in the water aboard the 35ft “Valerie” boat, inshore fun with groupers, mojarra fish, lady fish catch.

OTHER SPECIES: Pisces 46ft Bertram “Attitude Adjustment” released a 100 lbs thresher shark at the Faro for Gary Evans and Ted Williams from Dallas, Texas.  We had some Mahi-Mahi action this week, Pisces 28ft “Andrea” brought a 28 pounder, 25 miles over the 210 spot for Sang Park, Jeff Son and Jae Byun from Los Angeles, California.  Pisces “Bill Collector” 32ft got another 20lbs. Dorado for guests Robert Snyder & Paul Nielsen coming from Minnesota.  For all the lovers of inshore fishing, big Trigger fish week! (chopo week) excellent for fun and food.  We are just starting to see all great inshore variety for Ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, Amberjacks and Groupers, Pampano, Yellow tail, Red Snapper over Pozo Cota, Los Arcos & Margaritas and sizes from 5 to 25 lbs.  Our friends from Roofing Supplies commanded by Kelly Woods did their yearly inshore trip in pangas and enjoying their catch next door at Captain Tony's Restaurant.  You catch it we cook it!  Three boats  took the risk and ran over 40 miles out to look for Yellow fin tuna, Pisces 31ft “Ruthless”, “Tracy Ann", and 38ft “C Rod” bringing each a 15 lbs.  Very slow compared to the amazing numbers we had a few weeks ago!  Forty two percent of our Pisces anglers caught a huge variety of inshore fishing and the total of 14% combined Dorado and Yellow fin tuna.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report February 6 to 12, 2016

BILLFISH: We had anglers strictly interested in targeting the Striped Marlin this week, did not care the tuna season is good!  Some of them were successful in reeling such a magnificent fish, other anglers unfortunately were not that lucky, however they tried and promised to return to Cabo and give a shot again!  The fishing stills at least 30 miles out and more, over the Pacific Ocean.  The Pisces “Andrea” 28ft boat released a Striped Marlin, weight estimated 110lbs. and six tunas for Tom Stein, Steve Magner, Phil Healey and Kevin Salts from Lafayette, Indiana.  The other Pisces 28ft “Andrea” did its magic as well reeling in 120 lbs. Striped Marlin almost reaching Todos Santos town at Elias Calles, for William Chapel's group visiting from beautiful New Orleans, Louisiana.  On February 08th “Ruthless” 31ft Pisces Bertram got tight lines with a Striped Marlin released and brought six tunas as well (18-20 lbs.) twenty five miles out of the Herradura for Brad Hall, Holly Meyer, Kevin Smets, Jane Riehl and Chinyere Abosi from Los Angeles, California.  Pisces 35ft “Listo” got a good size 180 lbs. Striped Marlin which was successfully released for James Heller, Josh Karr, Randy Hughes, and Jason Jiongo from Redding, California at El Faro spot.  Of course “Tracy Ann” our 31ft vessel released a160 lbs. Marlin and two dorados in Punta Lobos for Cory Pardon, Lana Nogosek, Dan and Robin Sedevie visiting from cold Minot, in North Dakota for sure enjoying our mild winter. Twelve percent of our Pisces anglers released a total of 8 Striped Marlin.

OTHER SPECIES: Yellow fin tuna still being the primary catch with football sizes and still quite far out over on the Pacific;  Pisces “La Brisa” 31ft vessel caught sixteen tunas, between 10 to 20 lbs. twenty six miles out of the Cerro for Donald Frederick and Sue Johnson from Houston, Texas. “Rebecca” 31ft Pisces got tight lines for Duane Moyer's group from Gilberts Ville, PA reeling thirty five tunas (ten released) outside of Punta Lobos using feathers and cedar plugs.  “Valerie” 35ft Pisces brought thirty five tunas (ten released) in front of La Ballena, for Mike McCoy from Iowa.  “Adriana” 28ft Pisces vessel went outside of the Golden Gate with Peter Menge and Lisa Rudick from Manitoba, Canada and brought eleven yellow fin tunas, estimated weight 20 lbs.  On February 10th the “C Rod” 38ft vessel brought a Wahoo of 20 lbs. very lucky as being the only wahoo catch, indeed happy anglers Katherine and Hudson Swaffard, Harris English and Helen Marie Bowers visiting from Saint Simmons, Georgia.  “Shambala” 60ft Hatteras had a run to Punta Lobos and got tight lines for the persistent group from Florida, Clayton Hummel, Abby Figueroa, Carlos Vasquez, Dan Kirkpatrick and Jeffrey Stewart and brought fifteen yellow fin tunas and the “Tracy Ann” 31ft Pisces ran forty miles out of the Old Light House for Daniel Carpenter from Montgomery, New York and reeled fifteen tunas as well.  The Dorado catches are being spotted with live bait such as caballito and we are seeing the football sizes from 18 to 20 lbs. excellent for a good dinner time.  “La Brisa” 31ft Pisces boat brought one mahi- mahi from Todos Santos for Jonathan Colton and Natalie Kresich from San Francisco, California. “Ruthless” Pisces 31ft brought another one between the 95 spot and 11.50 spot for the Padalia family from Tallahassee, FL.  And Bill Collector 32ft vessel brought four tunas and one Dorado 36 miles at the 210 spot for Mark Chiavetta and friends.  Sixty one percent of the Pisces anglers brought 397 yellow fin tunas, the eleven percent brought 8 Dorado and the other species the twelve percent, consisted in one wahoo and small trigger fish and skip jacks that where released.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report January 30th to February 5th, 2016

31ft “Tracy Ann” got tight lines for with Corey Pardon and Lana Nogosek from Minot, ND with two good size Dorados!

BILLFISH: The Striped Marlin report increased by seven percent compared to last weekly report! Although the stronger, cooler winter winds coming from the North made fishing a little slower overall, it was still wonderful enough to come down to Cabo and spend a pleasant vacation reeling the fish of your dreams!

The "Andrea" vessel got tight lines for Billy and Michelle Kreft, Andy and Andrea Johnson visiting from Iowa releasing a Striped Marlin, one Dorado and five tunas outside of La Ballena over the Pacific side.  Pisces' vessel "Tracy Ann" had a great trip reeling a Striped Marlin at the Old light House for the group of Dustin Jackson from Jamestown, North Dakota.  Very Lucky guys!  "C Rod" released another Striped Marlin for Scott Fagen and Frank Bennett from Texas State in the same spot over the Pacific.  The Cabo "Hot Rod" a 42ft beauty released in the Pedregalito a Striped Marlin for Sean Lucas and Ryan Dyrbye from British Columbia, Canada.  On February 5th, Pisces' 28ft "Andrea" traveled 30 miles out of the hill and released a Striped Marlin and a tuna for Michael & Suzanne Laster and Heath and Michelle Martin from Oklahoma City.  Captain Ray Winkler's run on Pisces 31ft "La Brisa" to the Golden Gate got a Striped Marlin for David Metz and Dale Helsing from Elko, Nevada.  The only Marlin spotted over the Sea of Cortes was aboard the "Adriana" and its estimated weight was 120 lbs for David & Dale again!  Seventeen percent of our Pisces anglers released 10 Striped Marlin.

OTHER SPECIES: We have an increase for Dorado catches as well, the always ready "Listo" Pisces', 35ft boat, run's to El Molino passing the Old light house got a 25 lbs dorado with live bait for Joe Franz, Greg and Brenda McNew and Brian Mohr from Houston, Texas.  Our 31ft "Ruthless"caught two dorados between 15 to 18 lbs. outside of the Golden for Scott Weaver, Jim Parkin and Wes Smith from Southern Pines, North Carolina. "Tracy Ann", our 31ft boat got tight lines with two dorados and fourteen tunas, between 10 to 20 lbs for Marc Groen and Michael Lindermulder from Orland Park, Illinois.  And our 42ft "Yahoo" with Captain Ricardo went all the way outside of La Ballena, Pacific side and spotted fourteen tunas with cedar plugs and feathers, estimated to weigh ten to twenty pounds for Matt McCarthy's group visiting from Texas.  Our 32ft "Bill Collector" just never stops!  She reeled twenty four tunas, seven released, weighing an estimated 15 to 40 lbs for Bryan Johnson, Hugh Gannon, Matt Curry and Kevin Gleason and guests visiting from Atlanta, GA.  As we moved during the week the tuna pushed out further reaching almost the 40 miles, our 31ft boat "La Brisa" got 10 yellow fin tuna thirty seven miles outside of the Faro for Larry and Jacy Barnwell from Houston, Texas.  Our good friend Chic from Scotland brought sixteen tunas aboard the"Valerie" (a 35ft Pisces vessel), in a long ride to San Jaime Banks.  Forty seven percent of our Pisces customers brought 216 tunas, fifteen percent brought 11 dorados and the one percent reeled small trigger fish only, a bit quiet for smaller species.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report January 23 - 29, 2016

BILLFISH:  Marlin catches were painfully slow this week, as the moon waxed beautiful, illuminating the night sky and giving the fish an opportunity to feed at night and not bother with the bait offered by fishermen in the daylight hours.  In fact very few were spotted.  Highlight of the week was when the King of Sweden, on an unofficial visit to meet with scientists and fishery experts, did extremely well to release a nice striped marlin and a mako shark from a panga, on what was a tough day.  Pisces crews worked hard and did manage to find a few marlin for our anglers though with live bait, either caballito or mackerel doing the trick.  Just one marlin was caught on a Petrolero lure (brown/gray/orange) aboard Pisces Valerie on January 23rd  at Las Margaritas-Los Arcos for Mike Lenz, Bob Downport, Bill Muller and Will Rigsby visiting from Idaho.  Pisces 31ft  Bertram “Tiburon” released another Striped Marlin  twenty six miles out from the Old Lighthouse for Sean Caroline´s  group visiting from Savage, Minnesota.  Anglers Jessica & Brian Cyphers from Folsom, California opted for a 25ft panga, Pichurro which was within their budget a good decision as they were able to catch a striped marlin at the Old Lighthouse.  “Andrea” a 28ft Uniflite  released a 110 lbs. Marlin just outside of the Golden Gate on the Pacific for Bud & Karen Cross from Fort Collins, Colorado and finally Pisces “Rebecca” 31ft Bertram released another one  yesterday, the complete opposite direction off of San Jose del Cabo for Clayton, Robert Greathouse & James and Christopher Cornelius from Metairie, Louisiana.  The outlook is for the marlin bite to increase as the moon gets smaller and we will probably start seeing  fish show up on the Cortez side also.  Pisces anglers released a total of five Striped Marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES:  The main catch this week is the unstoppable yellow fin tuna being, happy anglers with fresh sashimi food!  Football sizes from 10, 15, 20 and 25 lbs. and vessels going from twenty to thirty miles off over the Pacific side - long days on less than smooth seas. Pisces “Andrea” 28ft caught eight tunas and one Dorado for Michael and Leah Keller from Mandan, North Dakota. Pisces “Rebecca” 31ft brought twenty one tunas outside the Golden Gate for Dale, Tim, Matt & Brandon Quirk, Dean Newman, Charlie Hand visiting all from North Carolina.  Pisces 31ft “Tracy Ann" caught thirty one tunas, released ten outside on Jaime bank.  Pisces 35ft “Valerie” did great for Brian Nixon group our local friend and reeled twenty two tunas at the Golden as well.  Pisces 31ft “La Brisa” on January 27th put reel action with ten tunas and a Dorado outside of Cerritos for Sean Miles, Scott Key, John Miller, Seth & Natalia Sanford and Reece Finlayson visiting from Miami, Florida and Australia.  Bill Collector 32ft Pisces brought six tunas from 20 to 45 lbs. outside of La Herradura for Kari Lehtonen and Cody Eakin from Dallas, Texas and “Shambala” 60ft Pisces got thirty tunas outside of Punta Lobos for Frank Adler, Gary McArdell, Ken Gould, Travis Haining, Matt Kinley and Kevin Thomas from California.  Pisces 31ft “Tiburon” got a 25 pounder dorado outside of the old light house for Darrel Kvasager, David & Mark Hoiland from Minnetonka, Minnesota.  Seventy three percent of our charters brought yellow fin tunas and fourteen percent of our charters caught dorado, which consisted of 490 tunas and 9 dorados.  Limits were kept on all fish with the remainder released.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report December 19 - 24, 2015

BILLFISH: This week saw steady catches of striped marlin for a little more than half of the boats, with a few sudden spikes of multiple catches per single boat.  Weather has been colder and windier, which meant boats couldn’t always fish the Pacific where more marlin were believed to be.  One of the top catches in a single day goes to Pisces Yahoo for six stripers up to 140 LBS at Pozo de Cota for the Hattners from Keller, Texas on December 20th; they also caught two dorado.  Tracy Ann had the only sailfish of the week, a big one, estimated at 110 LBS, plus two striped marlin released for Swedish anglers Ola Eklund, Peter Mucander and Johan Ingenmanusson; all three fish took live caballito at the Herradura.  Next day out it was Greg & Jack Sullivan who had the best day, this time aboard La Brisa as they released four striped marlin up to 120 LBS at Los Arcos.  They also managed to land two dorado for the dinner table.  It’s no wonder Tracy Ann won top marlin boat for Pisces this year; they seem to have a knack for it and proved it by releasing six marlin up to 100 LBS on December 21st for McCullough family from Fayetteville, Georgia – well done!  One of the most enviable days was aboard Flora T for a group from Dallas headed up by Darrell Overcash – they released three striped marlin and caught six dorado and two wahoo, fishing at Los Arcos. The marlin were spread out this week, with no one set location.  Boats started out fishing on the Cortez side then moved up the Pacific as far as Golden Gate.  Fifty one percent of our charters caught between one and six marlin giving us a total catch of 61 billfish.

 

 

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches were steady for most boats and could be caught over a wide area. When found, catches ranged from one to nine fish in the 15 to 25 LB class.  Pisces Valerie had an active day on dorado on the Pacific at Migrino where they caught nine dorado on a combination of ballyhoo and ballyhoo for Brad Lassila and family from Colorado.  Adriana, one of our 28 ft. boats, had some good dorado action too, with eight caught up to 25 LBS at Los Arcos and Margaritas for a group of anglers from Kansas.  Fifty three percent of our anglers caught dorado this week giving us a total catch of 129 fish.  Tuna catches were very slow this week with just a few boats even finding them.  The exception was Bill Collector who headed to Jaime Bank on the Pacific and managed to land fifteen up to 20 LBS for Ross Benson and Steve Buckley and friends from New Jersey and Massachusetts respectively.  Several boats caught wahoo this week but they are by no means plentiful and tended to be small at 15 to 20 LBS.  There was not much inshore action except for an odd triggerfish, rooster or sierra.

LOCATION: 95 spot on the Cortez side, then Los Arcos, Pedregal, Migrino, Margaritas and Golden Gate.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Windy and on the cold side, mostly overcast, seas moderate to choppy.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Nov 20-27, 2015

BILLFISH: Another great week for late season blue marlin catches in Cabo!  We are not used to seeing all these blues so late in the year and surely this is the result of the “El Niño” current which has brought consistent warm water throughout the year and therefore steady, good catches.  Let's start with the Pisces 28ft “Adriana” who released a blue marlin estimated at 200 lbs. outside of la Herradura for Ulf Cristiansson and Lennart Arrenius visiting from Sweden. Pisces 38ft “C Rod” released another 200 lb. blue outside of el Cerro for William Gluckman and Sonia Schaeffer from New Jersey along with one Dorado and two yellow fin tuna. Pisces “Andrea” headed up to the San Jaime Bank and released yet another blue marlin for Allyson, Sean, Chris and Lizzie Park from Nashville, Texas. “Bill Collector” our 32 ft. Cabo, worked really hard and got a 350 lbs. blue marlin, forty miles out from Land’s End for Richard & Grey Simoncic and Joseph Zucarello from Paradise, Az.  To round up the blue marlin catches Pisces 55 ft. “Flora T” released 250 lbs. blue some way up the Pacific coast at Migriño, for Wade & Forrest Threadgill from Austin, TX.  Pisces “Speedwell” a 38 ft. Mediterranean released one Striped Marlin, one sailfish and one dorado for Jason Allen, Brian Van Holland and Narciso Flores from Laguna Hills, Ca. at La Antena close to Migriño.  Brian Dodd and friends from Colorado and Montana fished aboard 31ft Pisces “Tiburon” and were really pleased releasing their first Striped Marlin!  “Cabolero” released two Striped marlin and one dorado at the Old light house for John Thompson & Diana Goettle from Helena, Montana. Pisces 31ft “Rebecca” and 31ft “Tracy Ann” with our good friends Anders Lundgren of Sweden released two Striped Marlin, one Sailfish at the 95 Spot and two Striped Marlin at the 11.50 spot during their last trip of this year”.   Pisces “Ruthless” did well too with one striped marlin released and ten dorados at Elias Gaspareño for Ken & Elizabeth Kerr, Kevin and Laura Atamamuk from San Clemente. Pisces “Valerie” released two Striped Marlin and boated two dorados, two sierras and released two rooster fish at the Golden Gate for Susan, Eddie and Katie Janecheck from Costa Mesa & Sacramento, Ca.  Panga Poseidon released a striped marlin at the Old Lighthouse for Mike & Erin Elgru from South Carolina.  Eighty five percent of Pisces Anglers released a total of 79 billfish, consisting in 69 Striped Marlin, 5 Blue and 5 sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado fishing was hot this week, with seventy of our clients catching a total of 341 dorado, ranging from 10 to 25 lbs. Tuna catches were on the slow side with just nine percent of our anglers bringing in a total of 35 yellow fin tuna, ranging in size from 10 to 15 lbs.  Four of our vessels brought in wahoo, whilst others caught rooster fish, needlefish and sierras which are excellent for making ceviche.  Pisces “Bill Collector” brought in eight dorados , with one released at La Ballena, on the Pacific side for the Stein Family visiting from Miami, Fl.  Pisces Shambala a  60 ft. Hatteras, caught five dorados at Elias Calles for Manuel Araujo and Stephanie & Matthew Mason from Houston, TX.  On November 25th the majority of boats had a great day for dorado fishing, such as Pisces “Tiburon”, “Ruthless”, “Tracy Ann” over at the Golden Gate. Pisces “Andrea” caught six tunas for Paul Smith and Tom Dufell from United Kingdom at San Jaime.  

LOCATION: Pacific Side -Golden Gate, La Ballena, San Jaime, El Faro, Elías Calles, Pescadero. Sea of Cortes: 11.50, 95 spot. 

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Rain on a couple of days which cause the port to be closed for two days due to tropical storm Sandra. Cool, nice, overcast, cloudy a little choppy. The outlook is for excellent fishing.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 82F- 85FT

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Nov 7 - 13, 2015

BILLFISH: Marlin fishing is in a transition stage right now, that is, the catches are still good, but we are waiting for an influx of striped marlin from further up the Pacific.  In the meantime we are still seeing catches of late season blue & black marlin as well as sailfish.  Weather is starting to change which means fishing can be less consistent on a daily basis.  Hot Rod, the latest addition to the fleet is already proving to be one of our best & this crew did not disappoint for Dave Bulthuis, Costa Del Mar tournament sponsor, when they were able to release his son Chet’s first ever blue marlin which was tagged & released, estimated at 220 LBS on November 7th.  This wasn’t the only great catch this day; Pisces Yahoo released a much sought after black marlin, not huge at around 160 LBS, but nevertheless a nice catch for Craig Bentham from Canada Dan Brendes & friends had a great day out aboard Pisces Listo on November 10th when they were able to release three striped marlin & boat four dorado up to 20 LBS at Pozo de Cota.  Out this same day was the Mercier group from Florida aboard Pisces Valerie who did even a little better with four striped marlin released & three dorado boated.  Not to be left out and with a respectable catch of three marlin released & eight dorado was Yahoo with Florida anglers Francesca & George Filafas. Pisces Tracy Ann always seems to make the fish report & this week was no exception; on November 12th, Corey Hopkins, Ron & Paige Simonson fished outside the Herradura & did very well to catch & release a blue marlin, two striped marlin & eight yellow fin tuna.  Pretty much all the catches were on the Pacific side.  Forty three percent of Pisces anglers caught a total of 66 billfish this week, consisting of 60 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin, 1 black marlin & 3 sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado was the most popular catch this week with a respectable 213 fish caught by sixty percent of our anglers.  Catches ranged from one to eleven fish with weights from 15 to 30 LBS.  Pisces La Brisa had one of the better dorado catches with eleven caught off of Elias Calles, plus a striped marlin released, a little further up at Golden Gate for George Fee & party from New Jersey.  Another boat to do well & keep their anglers busy all day was Pisces Rebecca with ten dorado, one roosterfish & one needlefish.  Another high dorado boat was Tracy Ann with not only eight dorado, but two striped marlin released & two roosterfish for British anglers Gary Morrison & Kevin Moreton.  Although lures did work, live caballito was definitely the way to get more hook ups.  Tuna catches were on a par with last week at sixteen percent, but when found the catches tended to be multiple & up to fourteen fish, though the norm was three to ten fish.  Our total tuna catch was of 92 fish.  Roosterfish increased slightly but were seldom bigger than 10 or 15 LBS. Inshore triggerfish, needlefish, bonitas, skipjacks & sierra were all caught but in conservative quantities.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Nov 1 - 6, 2015

BILLFISH:  The top story this week was the Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot, popular Tuna Tournament, a yearly two day fishing competition now in its 16th year.  This fun event drew 143 teams and over 500 anglers.  As tuna were the target species many teams opted to fish practice days so the marlin count went down somewhat this week.  Pisces Listo got off to a good start by releasing a smallish blue marlin and boating four dorado at Los Arcos for Robert & Laura Coffelt from Pennsylvania, while on this same day Valerie managed to release two striped marlin, a sailfish and boat a dorado for anglers from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.  Listo scored their second blue marlin of the week on November 3rd, at the Golden Gate as well as catching four dorado for John Amsler and friends from Austin, Texas.  The biggest fish of the week for us was aboard Pisces Tiburon, a blue marlin estimated at 310 LBS, which was released along with a striped marlin, at San Jaime by Mike Casey from Wareham, Massachusetts.  Robert and Lisa Lindquist from Sandy, Oregon had an off the charts day aboard the ever popular Tracy Ann when they released three striped marlin, two sailfish, a roosterfish and five dorado – it doesn’t get much better than that.  Even during the tuna tournament the blue marlin kept coming – Andrea had a blue released thirty eight miles out after it an orange and black lure for Keith Gelfand.  This same day La Brisa released a small blue marlin, around 200 LBS.  Pisces Cabolero a 31 ft. Cabo Express, released two blue marlin and a striped marlin during the tuna tournament for Canadian anglers headed up by Jim and Lane Hyslop. Attitude Adjustment was another boat to release a blue around the 200 lb. mark.  Overall a great week, with lots of anglers having fun and catching a ton of fish, even if they weren’t always the species they wanted.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 40 striped marlin, 8 blue marlin and 10 sailfish this week; all but one were released.


OTHER SPECIES:  Tuna was on everybody’s mind and radar but it was a shame that the numbers dropped this week as several seiners moved in to the area and beat a lot of the boats to the big fish, of course there were still plenty of qualifiers out there with  thirteen fish over 100 LBS and several other qualifiers.  The dorado category was a tough one to fill, even though many of this species were caught  it was hard to find one that could make the minimum weight of 30 LBS, in fact only was weighed in at 31 LBS sending the anglers wild for a few minutes, thinking they had won $50,800 for their fish.  Their dream was short lived however, as five minutes later as the tournament drew to a close, Gladiator pulled up with a 49 LB wahoo that knocked the dorado out of the running.  Of course we are very proud of Pisces C Rod who took top honors with a 210 LB tuna and of Ruthless who took biggest wahoo on day one with a 36.9 LB fish.  Details of winners and prizes at the end of this report.  Dorado was the most frequently caught fish this week with sixty five percent of charters catching between one and sixteen fish in a day in the 12 to 25 LB class.  The dorado were found spread out along the Pacific coast and took live caballito, ballyhoo and different lures – in other words they were hungry.  Rebecca caught over a dozen of at Los Arcos for Dan and Dawn from Cody, Wyoming.  Top dorado boat though was Tracy Ann with sixteen in a day plus a striped marlin at Los Arcos for Glenn Rogne and Jim Vasi from Florida.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 377 dorado this week.  As mentioned above tuna catches could have been better and boats went far and wide trying to track down a winner.  The guys from Maybe Manana that took second place and earned themselves a payday of over $200,000 told us that they went far, over forty miles and when they got there the tuna seiners were wrapping up all the fish, but they figured one or two had to escape; they didn’t lose heart and stayed close by which enabled them to land a nice 198 LB fish.  Other boats, such as Bill Collector found the tuna at San Jaime and were able to catch seventeen on November 3rd but all were small school size fish.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 74 tuna this week.  We had a few wahoo up to 36 LBS and a couple of sharks, pilot and hammerhead, both released.  Inshore it was nice to see some roosterfish showing up and gaining a little consistency.

WEATHER CONDITIONS:  November is the best time of year –clear sunny days and cool nights; seas were calm inshore but a little rough out where the tuna were.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report October 24 - 30, 2015

BILLFISH:  You can definitely notice a change of season is underway in Cabo.  We don’t really have four seasons, but rather have summer and spring.  The heat is finally beginning to abate somewhat and we have had our first cooler evenings and early mornings.  All this signals a slowdown on blue marlin and sailfish and an increase on striped marlin.  Nevertheless water temperatures remain in the 80’s which keeps the blues and sails hanging around.  Live bait became scarce mid-week and a full moon disappointed a few anglers as marlin refused to cooperate some days.  Overall though excellent fishing with some superb catches.  Claudia Cooper along with Mike and Stephen Walsh were out aboard on of our smaller boats, 28 ft.  Andrea, they headed up the Sea of Cortez to Destiladeras, over 20 miles away, but it paid off when they were able to release three striped marlin up 120 LBS and a sailfish.  Later on in the week this same group and boat went on to release a blue marlin and boat six tuna. Thirty one foot Bertram, Ruthless has been on a roll for blue marlin and didn’t disappoint this week either, releasing a 250 LB specimen at the 11.50 spot for Courtney and Jared from Waco, Texas.  This same day, October 25th, Tracy Ann had lucky Texan anglers from Rockwall, George Hearn and friends aboard; two sailfish and a blue marlin was there tally off of San Jose.  How about three striped marlin, two sailfish and a dorado?  That was the sum of the catch for Darrell Brock and brothers from Texas, aboard Bill Collector off of Golden Gate on the Pacific. Speedwell had an enviable catch for the Flora family from Englewood, California.  They were kept busy releasing two striped marlin, two sailfish and boating a wahoo and skipjack.  Modesto angler Troy Bergman headed up the group aboard Valerie when they had a five billfish day consisting of four stripers and a sailfish.  Brian Livingstone and friends from Charlevoix, MI had an action packed day aboard Tiburon on October 28th when they released FIVE striped marlin and boated a dorado.  Closing out the week with a higher than regular catch was La Brisa with four striped marlin released for Michael and Ann Leroux, who also got a nice dorado for the table.  There were many other great catches, simply too many to mention.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 114 billfish this week, consisting of 82 striped marlin, 29 sailfish and 3 blue marlin.
 

OTHER SPECIES:  The dorado that has been absent all summer have finally shown up and we saw some nice catches of between one and nine fish for a portion of the fleet.  Thirty four percent of charters were pleased to be able to boat fish in the 15 to 35 LB class and to have some nice eating fish to take home.  Top dorado boat was Ruthless for catching nine off of Las Margaritas on the Pacific for Aaron and Jennifer from Houston – the smaller ones were released.  Speedwell was another boat that did well on dorado; they got seven as well as a wahoo and three striped marlin for Jim Dustin and Joe Frey.  Our total dorado count was seventy four fish.  Tuna catches dropped down a bit this week as dorado moved into the area and boats tried for these, as they were closer in along with striped marlin.  We did see a few big fish, such as a 288 LB monster caught aboard Mucho Bueno.  Our smaller twenty eight foot boats caught the biggest tuna this week starting out with Andrea who had both a 189 LB and a 152 LB, both quality fish they would probably hit a prize in the upcoming Tuna Jackpot – these anglers caught a total of six tuna and released a blue marlin too – well done to Claudia Cooper, Mike and Stephen Walsh from Colorado.  San Diego angler Blake Robinson landed a 120 LB tuna just below San Jaime on a green and yellow lure aboard Adriana.  Catches ranged from one to ten tuna per boat, when found and our total catch was of eighty seven fish.  It was nice to see fair activity on wahoo with several boats catching fish in the 30 to 40 LB class. The only other fish we caught this week were a few skipjack and a single lemon shark.

WEATHER: Clear sunny skies, some wind on the Pacific especially towards the end of the week, when it blew hard in the week. Moderate seas.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report October 17 - 23, 2015

BILLFISH:  An exciting week in Cabo culminating in the Bisbee Black & Blue Marlin Tournament resulting in a huge payday for Costa Rican charter boat Tranquilo, not only did they win the Bisbee Offshore they took third place in the Black & Blue with a 327 lb. blue marlin, but because they were in all the different jackpots they took home more dinero than first or second place - $2,511,462.00 USD was added to the cash they had already won a few days before to give them a grand total of $2,971,662.00 and yes, that is dollars.  First place was taken by local charter boat Rondinella for a 500 lb. blue marlin on the last day for a group of Canadian anglers headed up by Tyler Squire which netted them $356,255.00.  Second place also went to another local charter boat, what a Journey for Texan anglers who landed a 356 lb. blue and took $156,937.00 in prize money.  Although regular charter business was brisk and productive the same could not be said of the tournament fishing resulting in one of the slowest Bisbee’s we can remember.  Of the 121 teams competing over three days only three qualifying fish were weighed in.  Pisces Sportfishing boats competing did quite well with Ruthless releasing a blue marlin each day, unfortunately though the anglers had not entered the release division (take note….always enter the release division).  The top release boat only had two and won $72,000.00!  In regular business we had some superb catches; Tracy Ann released ten striped marlin on the Pacific side for Patrick & Jeanne Neville from Bradenton, Florida on October 17th – this same day the panga Gloria managed to release four marlin for British angler Devine Jones.  Tiburon released a 300 LB blue marlin and boated eight tuna for Barb & Keith Mehlenbacher at the Jaime Bank.  Tracy Ann cranked it up again on October 20th and managed to catch eight striped marlin at Golden Gate for the Roxbergs from Minnesota.  This same day 28 ft. Andrea released five striped marlin up to 180 lbs. for Doug Logan and friends from Seattle, who also boated a dorado.  Though not in the tournament our 35 ft. Cabo Knot Workin landed a 354 LB blue marlin for a group from Texas on a day where no qualifying fish were weighed at the tournament.  Boats fishing in the tournament were only targeting blue and black marlin, so our catch rate is a little lower than it could have been, as there was plenty of striped marlin around.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 135 striped marlin, 11 sailfish and 9 blue marlin.

OTHER SPECIES:  Tuna catches were good this week with a total of 228 fish caught by our anglers, with catches ranging from one to eighteen fish in a day.  A little under half of the boats managed to land this tasty species and some were of a good size which bodes well for the upcoming WON Tuna Tournament.  Flora T II  landed a nice fish that weighed in at 147 LBS which they caught with a skipjack (is that cannibalism?) for angler Andre Gauron.  On October 19th 28 ft. Andrea had a great day for Felix Forjet and friends at San Jaime, where they caught seven tuna up to 110 lbs. and released a striped marlin too.  Cabolero did well with Alaskan anglers on board when they caught nine tuna up to 100 LBS, plus a nice wahoo and sailfish released.  Lots of sharks around at the moment – Bill Collector released five pilot sharks and boated a dozen tuna for Richard Prather & Meli Baum from Texas. Another one of our boats released an aggressive bull shark.  Other catches were the odd roosterfish, skipjacks, wahoo and a couple of early sierra.
