Numbers at a glance: Billfish 30%, Dorado 88%, Tuna 6%, Other 30%

BILLFISH:  We started of the week nicely, with Bill Collector and anglers from Tennessee catching and releasing a nice sized 500 lb blue marlin caught on a petrolero lure out of the Lighthouse.  They went on to catch eight more dorados as well.

The Rebecca also caught a nice blue marlin this week, but this one was found out of Gaspareño, making anglers Scott and Allison very happy.  The marlin was caught on a green/orange lure and was released.  Dorados bit their colorful lures too and even took some live bait, allowing the anglers a nice dinner that evening.  The dorados weighed from 15 lbs, to 30 lbs.

There were also a few striped marlin this week, with the La Brisa catching two of around 140 to 160 lbs, that were released. They were caught on caballito bait out of Los Arcos, by anglers from Delaware.  They also caught eight dorados on caballito bait and blue and green lures out of Las Margaritas.

The Valerie also did well with the billfish, although more so with the yellowfin, which were tough to find this week. They caught two striped marlin that they released as well as six yellowfin tuna and fourteen dorados!  Tunas were caught all on cedar plugs, while the dorados, five of which were released, landed on green and tigrillo lures outside of Golden Gate.

OTHER SPECIES: We saw an impressive amount of dorado caught this week!  Even with fewer boats out we saw almost double the number of fish caught compared to last week.  The fish have been found in the same locations, even though water temperatures have risen a few degrees, making the water amazingly warm for the season. 

The Andrea had a busy day, reeling in nineteen dorados and releasing nine, all ranging from 15 to 35 lbs.  The fish were caught on caballito bait and on a range of colorful lures outside of Migriño and Gaspareño.  Anglers were Jonathan and Randy all the way from Alberta, Canada.

The Tiburon caught twenty dorado and released five, as well as three yellowfin that were found around Golden Gate and Pozo Cota area.  Dorado were caught on lures and bait and tuna on cedar plugs and petrolero lures.

The wahoo brought some “yahoos” out of anglers from California, as vessel and crew on our 42 ft Yahoo caught three wahoo of about 20 lbs each.  They were caught on red and yellow lures, as well as bait.  The group also caught thirteen dorados out of Migriño.

We also caught plenty of roosters this week.  The Diablo Loco panga showed us how it’s done close to shore, catching and releasing three roosterfish, one of which was about 40 lbs.  They also caught two sierra outside of La Bomba.

Total number of fish caught: 17 billfish, 261 dorado, 9 tunas, 11 roosterfish, 6 wahoo and 7 sierras.

Pisces Team Wins La Playita Dorado Tournament

Past weekend saw 76 local boats compete in the La Playita Dorado Tournament.  Team " Pisces" (aboard the Rebecca) consisted of J.R Alucano, Luis Cota, Bruce Montano and Rebecca Ehrenberg - beat out everybody with the winning fish reeled in by Captain J.R.  

It was a close call as earlier in the day, Rebecca had an even bigger fish on the line that was stolen at the boat by a sneaky sea lion, despite the crew frantically tossing bait fish into the water to distract the greedy beast, he obviously had a penchant for dorado and showed no interest in the measly bait.

After the heist, the team was silent, too disappointed to say a word - they knew it was the winning fish. They went on to find other fish, six more in fact, but none could measure up to the one they had lost.

The clock ticked on and they started to sweat - they had headed to the Pacific but the weigh in was in San Jose, about 20 miles away, lines had to be out at 3.00 pm and all fish had to be weighed by 4.00 pm. They began troll back, when Luis' sharp eyes saw a dorado honing in on one of his new lures.

God was smiling on them and they registered a solid hook up on what ended up being the winning fish -29.4 lbs earning them a nice cash prize and the brand new 23 ft panga pictured below. 

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Dec 6 - 13, 2014

BILLFISH:  The Valerie wowed us this week, showing us a nice variety of fish caught last Tuesday.  The anglers caught and released three striped marlin averaging about 110 lbs. out of Migriño and Las Margaritas.  They also caught three dorados and four wahoos out of La Antena and La Lobera.  Marlin was caught on caballito bait, as were some of the dorado, while the others bit on black/red lures.

The Tiburon had a similarly spectacular day towards the end of the week, with David and Caly from California catching and releasing three striped marlin as well as two dorados and a nice 20 lb wahoo.  Fish were caught out of Los Arcos and Pozo Cota, all on caballito bait.

- Nate & Amica and Nathan & Christina from Oregon, went fishing with Ruthless and caught 3 dorados and one wahoo.

OTHER SPECIES: Again, we saw tons of wahoo, which is quite surprising for the season.  Pisces Sportfishing boats caught a total of thirty-six wahoo this week, with the Ruthless being a perfect example of what we’ve been seeing now for the past two weeks; they caught eight wahoo all between 15 and 20 lbs.  However, most wahoo caught by other boats did average about 10 lbs.  The Ruthless caught their wahoo on rappala and blue/white lures.  The Ruthless and anglers Kerry and Matt from Washington also landed three dorado this same day, averaging 15 lbs and releasing one.  These bit on green and tigrillo lures out of Golden Gate and La Ballena.

Dorado took the win for most fish caught this week with 143 fish total.  Most dorado averaged about 15 lbs and Pisces boat Rebecca is a nice example of the dorado caught this week.  Anglers from Idaho caught ten dorados ranging from 10 to 25 lbs., respecting catch limits, as well as one wahoo and one red snapper.  All fish were caught on red/black and blue/white lures out of Golden Gate.

The Flora-T also had an excellent day of fishing catching six dorados all around 20 lbs, caught on green lures, as well as five wahoo around 10 lbs, caught on tigrillo lures.  They also caught and released two striped marlin and one sardine shark, out of Las Margaritas.

As for tuna, we didn’t see too many this week, but we were happy to see the C-Rod and anglers Joe, Cassie, Corey and Trisha all land a yellowfin each, with the biggest weighing in at 112 lbs.  The remaining three tunas averaged 15 lbs. and all were caught on caballito bait outside of San Jaime.

As for other species caught this week, we saw the Diablo Loco panga catch four roosterfish, all released, ranging from 20 to 30 lbs.  Other fish caught this week were skipjacks, triggerfish, sailfish and snapper.

Total number of fish caught this week: 33 billfish, 143 dorado, 13 tunas, 36 wahoo and a variety of others.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report, Nov 29 - Dec 6, 2014

Numbers at a glance: Billfish 46%, Dorado 56%, Tuna 19%, Other 80%

BILLFISH:  Billfish were surprisingly slow this week in comparison to other species caught, but it may have been because people were not going out of their way to find them.  Most of the fish this week were close to shore, so many boats preferred to head up the Pacific coast only a few miles out and catch some nice wahoo and dorado instead of looking for marlin.  However,  La Brisa was one of the boats to show us that if you were looking for the billfish you would find them.  They caught eight striped marlin, all released, ranging from 80 to 140 lbs, out of Golden Gate.  They also managed to catch three nice sized dorados close to Migriño averaging 25 lbs. 

On the same day, the Andrea and anglers Blake and Trevor from Texas, managed to catch and release one sailfish and one striped marlin out of Las Margaritas, and also find luck at Migriño with three dorados and one wahoo. 

Finally, the Ruthless managed to pull off and impressive half day of fishing, catching two striped marlin, around 120 and 140 lbs., which they released, as well as three dorado; making it back to the dock by 11:30 am. 

OTHER SPECIES:  This week was most certainly the week for wahoo.  We saw a few very nice sized wahoo making it to the scales, such as the 40 lb wahoo caught on the C-Rod by angler Baxton from CA.  In addition to this wahoo Baxton and friends caught four more wahoos ranging from 15 to 20 lbs, four dorados, one yellowfin tuna and one striped marlin which was released.  All small game fish were caught out at Gaspareño, while the marlin was caught at Pozo Cota.

The Tiburon crew and anglers Terry and Mathew had an excellent time fishing on this same day, catching eight wahoo!  They landed one of the biggest seen this week, weighing it in at 48 lbs, with the rest ranging from 15-20 lbs.  They also caught and released one striped marlin out at Golden Gate, while the wahoos were found at La Ballena.  Wahoos hit on rappala lures, green and black/red.

As for the dorados, the Ruthless and anglers from Indiana showed us that the mahi are still around, and in good size too.  They caught twelve of them all around 20 lbs out by Golden Gate on green lures.  They released five dorado as well as one striped marlin and, to top it off, caught three wahoo as well.  The wahoo bit on tigrillo lures and weighed about 20 lbs.

The tuna on the other hand did slow down a bit, but also because most anglers were interested in the fish closer to shore.  The tunas have been out a little further, but even with this, the Andrea and anglers from California managed to catch eight on feathers and cedar plugs out of Elias Calles. 

The Valerie really committed to find their anglers the tuna they wanted, going 30 miles out from the Lighthouse, and it paid off, they landed thirteen tunas all averaging from 15 to 25 lbs. They also caught and released a nice sized striped marlin of about 160 lbs.  The marlin was caught on caballito bait, while the tunas were caught on feathers.

Other small game seen this week were a few small sardine sharks that were released on the Knot Working, caught along with three yellowfins 22 miles out of the 200 spot. 

The Cabolero was a fine example of the many other small game fish caught this week, with one roosterfish, released, five sierras, one needlefish and one amberjack all caught in the same day out of the Lighthouse and Los Arcos.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Nov 22-28, 2014

BILLFISH: What a time to be in Cabo, truly there is no better time of year, the weather is fantastic and the fishing incredible – whales are starting to show up too.  Temperatures are a little warmer than usual which could account for the late season blue & black marlin and sailfish that were caught this last week.  Bill Collector has to be boat of the week for a couple of red hot days, starting with November 22nd, when anglers Michael Romero & Trent Warness from Oregon were on board.  They did what many anglers long to do in a lifetime, let alone in one day.  They caught and released a 350 lb. black marlin, released a 250 lb. blue marlin and four striped marlin, as well as catching two dorado!  All this just one mile from Los Arcos – an outstanding achievement; three types of billfish in one day, including an elusive black.  A couple of days later Captain Julio from Bill Collector had Dan Whiteside and friends from Corpus Christi, Texas on board as they headed up the Pacific to Golden Gate.  They had a great time releasing a 250 lb. blue marlin, as well as two striped marlin around the 100 lb. mark, nine tuna and a dorado.  Our friends from Sweden made their annual trip to Cabo and fished a total of eight days, we still haven’t been able to tally their catches but they did extremely well.  One highlight was for Kjell Ljunggren, Stefan Trumstedt & Jen Bergstrom, aboard Rebecca with five striped marlin and two sailfish released, plus three dorado on November 22nd.  Group leader for the Swedes is Anders Lundgren, who fished with Mikko Pederson and Lars Papp aboard Tracy Ann had a fun but exhausting day on the 23rd, releasing six striped marlin and catching fifteen tuna and two dorado.  Live bait was the most effective way to get hooked up to a billfish this week, with the Pacific producing most catches.  Seventy seven percent of Pisces anglers caught billfish this week, giving us a total catch off 110 fish, consisting of 100 striped marlin, 4 blue marlin, 1 black marlin and 5 sailfish. 

OTHER SPECIES:  Dorado and tuna remain in the area, but should start to decline as we head into December, nevertheless, with the warmer seas, they may just choose to stick around.  Forty eight percent of our boats caught between one and six dorado, most on the small side and hence released.  Tuna catches were slightly lower than those of dorado with forty five percent of our charters catching one to twenty plus tuna, though none were of notable size this week, but rather in the 15 to 30 lb. class.  There were a few small wahoo caught and inshore some sierra, roosters, triggerfish, grouper and skipjacks.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report, Nov 9 - 14, 2014

BILLFISH: 

What an outstanding week for Pisces Sportfishing, every single boat that went out caught fish and several of them, for that matter.  Although billfish weren’t the majority fish caught this week, the fleet still managed to catch 72 marlin and six sailfish , with all but one marlin being released.  Chic from Scotland aboard the Valerie, managed to start off the week very well in this department, catching and releasing five striped marlin and eight dorados.  This made Valerie the boat with the most billfish catches this week.  However, we did see quite a number of boats catching sailfish this week as well.  The La Brisa had an outstanding day on Tuesday, with Ladean and Dorren and friends from Tulsa, OK, releasing a sailfish around 80 lbs as well as a striped marlin.  They also caught 25 dorados and two wahoos!  Dorado catch limits of two per angler were respected; both billfish were caught outside of Gaspareno.

Barbara and friends aboard the Tiburon also managed to catch and release two sailfish and one nice sized striped marlin around 180lbs on caballito bait outside of San Jaime and Pozo Cota.  They also caught one dorado on a blue and white lure in the same area.

OTHER SPECIES: 

Dorado topped the charts for the number one species caught by our boats, with all but twelve boats this week landing at least one.

It was hard to choose which was our leading boat this week as so many did an outstanding job and caught many fish, however the Rebecca wowed us with an awesome catch of 25 dorados and two striped marlin.  Again, dorado catch limits were respected and both marlin were released.  The dorado were all caught on lures, both white and blue as well as green, out at Gaspareno.

The Bill Collector had a great day on Saturday, with twelve dorados and four yellowfin tunas reeled in by Linda and friends from Virginia.  The dorados averaged about 20 lbs and the tuna averaged about 30-35 lbs, all were caught outside the Cerros de Arena and San Jaime on cedar plugs and blue and green lures.  The anglers also landed one striped marlin and one sailfish, both released.

The Listo, with anglers John Delaney and friends from Arkansas found luck outside of Golden Gate catching 18 dorados and four wahoo on lures and one striped marlin, released, on caballito bait.  The Andrea and anglers from New Jersey found wahoo and dorado luck at Migrino and Golden Gate, catching seven wahoos and thirteen dorados on lures: green, purple, and white and blue.

Other species caught this week were sierra, roosterfish, grouper, skipjack and bonitas.

LOCATION: Migrino, Golden Gate, Gaspareno, Pozo Cota, San Jaime.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: A few windy days but mostly good conditions.

WATER TEMP: 81-84 F

BEST LURES: Live caballito, blue/white, purple, yellow and tigrillo.

Fishing Report, Oct 25 - 31, 2014

BILLFISH: 
This week got off to a great start, with an exciting catch on the C-ROD of a nice black marlin, by anglers from Beavercreek, Ohio.  Mark and William fought the 248 lbs black marlin for over two and a half hours before bringing it to the boat.  Not only this, but they also caught four striped marlin which they released, and two dorados.  The black marlin was caught on live bait out of Los Arcos, while the other marlin were caught at Pozo Cota.  Not bad for a day’s fishing!

The Rebecca and angler David from Puyallup, WA, had a good day on Tuesday, catching and releasing 5 striped marlin caught out of Las Margaritas on live bait.  Tom  from Snoqualmie, WA, was the lucky angler this week in terms of blue marlin.  He caught one of the only two blues of the week aboard the Halcon, which he released, weighing approximately 220 lbs.  He also managed to hook a dorado and a tuna weighing around 15 lbs.  Total billfish caught this week were 60 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin and 1 black marlin, all but one were released.

OTHER SPECIES:
Coming to Cabo all the way from France, angler Luc and friends impressed us this week by catching the most dorado out of any boat, by far.  They caught 18 dorados, releasing nine.  Catch limits allow 2 dorado caught per angler.  The dorado were caught on caballito bait and lures, with Las Margaritas being one of the most productive locations.  The group also caught two striped marlin and one impressive wahoo around 40 lbs caught on a guacamayo lure.  

Next in line with most dorados caught this week were Ruthless and Bill Collector with 8 dorados each, all caught on caballito bait and green and blue lures.  As well as Anglers Ronald and Helen from Granbury, MO, who caught two striped marlin and five dorados on live bait and green and striped lures.  Cenk from Vienna, Austria, did well catching the small game fish, reeling in three dorados and two roosterfish on caballito bait off of Migrino.  Only two boats caught Wahoo this week, with anglers Linda and Terry from Oklahoma aboard the Rebecca, and Michael and George from Birmingham, AL, aboard the Ruthless, finding luck with their black and red lures.  Of course, the third wahoo was caught by our Frenchman Luc Trasglise on the Ruthless as well.  The three wahoo caught this week were caught on different days but were still all found in the Las Margaritas and Pozo Cota area.
 
Tuna this week were few and far between, but the Listo and its anglers Alan and Aleisha from Colorado managed to land a decent size yellowfin off of the Old Lighthouse, weighing 20 lbs.

 Total fish caught this week were 60 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin and 1 black marlin.  Dorado impressively topped the charts at  a whopping 135 fish this week, 4 tunas, 5 roosters and 3 wahoos.

Fishing Report: October 16th to 24st, 2014

BILLFISH: It was great to finally have anglers around the marina in more than a trickle and thankfully the fishing did not disappoint with multiple marlin catches and good amounts of smaller game.  Andrea got us off to a good start, when the crew helped Mark and his team Sasquatch, from Washington, catch and release four striped marlin and boat a dorado on October 18^th, whilst La Brisa followed up with three marlin releases this same day. James Jr and friends, from El Paso, Texas entered the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament aboard Attitude Adjustment and did extremely well to catch two blue marlin the same day at Destiladeras, unfortunately though, they were doubtful they would make the minimum weight of 300 lbs., estimating the fish at 220 and 270 lbs.  Respectively, which meant they went back into the water to put on a few more pounds for next year.  La Brisa with Argentine anglers on board, had the most unusual catch, by way of three local fishermen whose panga had broken down and drifted 14 miles –thanks to the sharp eyes of deckhand Fernando Noyola a tragedy was averted and they were towed back to port. Manuel from Cancun was out aboard C Rod during the Bisbee and had the same situation as Attitude Adjustment, they got the fish on, but they weren’t big enough – they released a 250 lb. blue marlin and a striped marlin the same day (Manuel you should have entered the released division like we suggested).  Pisces Valerie had Florida angler Roger on board on October 22^nd who was fortunate to catch and release a blue marlin as well as a tuna and a couple of dorado. Attitude Adjustment had their third blue marlin of the week on October 23^rd, this one estimated just shy of the 300 lb. qualifying tournament weight, at approximately 280 lbs., for Trent from Tomball, Texas.  Pisces Sportfishing anglers caught a total of 74 billfish this week, consisting of 63 striped marlin, 6 blue marlin and 5 sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado could be counted on most days to keep fishermen busy as they reeled in fish up to 30 lbs., with as many as eight being caught per boat.  The best place to find dorado was on the Pacific between Los Arcos and Migrino.  Roger from Inverness, Florida got a bit too much excitement on his second day out aboard Valerie they hooked a mako shark that the captain Roberto estimated to be 200 lbs., they wanted to release it and usually would cut the line as close to the hook as possible. Deckhand Salvador, known as “Pollo”, or chicken by the rest of the fleet, decided he didn’t want to lose a new, large hook, he thought the shark was stunned and reached down to try and free the hook – big mistake, the shark sprang into action and caught his arm, leaving him a souvenir of a tooth embedded in his forearm and a nasty cut.  Thankfully he was not seriously hurt but did new a few stitches… puts a whole new meaning on “chicken (pollo) of the sea and the shoe was definitely on the other foot!   Tuna catches were at thirteen percent but anglers were not seriously after them, nevertheless we did see some come in, with Mark C. having a nice catch of eight of them, with the largest 82 lbs.  Our Argentine group headed up by Mariano de la Rua had several days of great fishing and wanted to try inshore one day aboard Rebecca. They did well catching and releasing a couple of roosterfish, a red snapper, grouper, needlefish, five skipjacks and a couple of bonita.  We had several wahoo this week, with the largest 48 lbs. caught aboard Ruthless.

Bisbee Black & Blue Final Day!

BISBEE DAY THREE, FINAL DAY: Nathan Visser from team Baja Bandidos just showed up with the first qualifier of the day a 320 lb blue marlin. This team is entered in the $1000 K daily jackpot, but will have to wait and see if they are in the money. Sporty Game are across the board and have just boated a fish. Gaviota 4 also have one on board and are in the $500 daily. Check back here and we will update you when these boats reach the dock to weigh their fish.

BILLFISH: It’s great to finally have something to write about as boats gradually begin to get out fishing after the hurricane.  Fisherman are hardy, not easily deterred by  and are slowly trickling back into Cabo to take advantage of the fabulous fishing that the month of October offers.  Some of the first anglers to visit Cabo, came all the way from Denmark; Henrik had fished all over the world trying to catch a blue marlin on what had been a 25 year mission, but all it took was for him to come to Cabo to realize his dream.  He released his 150 lb blue along with a sailfish at Punta Gorda, aboard Pisces La Brisa on October 9th.  Florida anglers Christopher, Kevin & Rich had an amazing time aboard our new 31 ft Bertram Tiburon on October 13th , when they released four striped marlin and caught fifteen dorado, of which five were released and one was stolen by Pancho the sea lion.  Jeffrey and Cassandra from Eagan, Minnesota had a fabulous day aboard La Brisa, where they were kept busy catching and releasing two striped marlin and a sailfish, as well as reeling in five dorado.  Tiburon continued on a roll and managed to release a sailfish and catch sixteen dorado, for Jessie and Amanda, from Lafayette, Louisiana at Los Arcos – but they ran into the same problem, a sea lion thief.  Basically the catches this week had the same pattern, usually a single striped marlin or sailfish, combined with a bunch of dorado.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 23 billfish this week consisting of 18 striped marlin, 1 blue marlin and 4 sailfish, all released except for the blue that died and one other striper that was kept.

OTHER SPECIES:  Dorado was by far and away the top sportfish this week, with seventy nine percent of Pisces charters catching from one to seventeen fish in a day.  This is common for this time of year and also after a storm, when they congregate under floating debris.  The best catches of dorado were on the Pacific side from Los Arcos to Migrino and Pozo de Cota, with weights from 10 to 30 lbs.  They liked live caballito and sardines as well as a variety of lures – in other words they are hungry.  Tuna catches were slow, but that is because nobody is targeting them with dorado and billfish being so close.  There was one large one in the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament that weighed 180 lbs, so we know they are out there.  Cabolero was very fortunate to catch two wahoo for Edward and Williarm as well as thirteen dorado – size on the wahoo was not great at 20 lbs, but any size wahoo is tasty.  The only other catches we had were those of a few skipjacks.

LOCATION: Pacific, Los Arcos, San Jaime, Margaritas, Pozo de Cota, Migrino, Cortez – Punta Gorda.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Great; clear sunny skies, calm seas – one day there were whitecaps on the Pacific.

BEST LURES: Live caballito, live sardines, blue/pink, guacamaya, blue/white.

Bisbee Black & Blue Gets Underway with 130 Teams!

This morning saw the first day of the biggest fishing event on the Cabo calendar and thanks to the donation by a generous philanthropist, of fifty paid entries to the event, the team numbers were boosted to a whopping 130 teams. Here is the first qualifying fish of the tournament a 394 lb blue marlin caught by Dan Tosczak from Victoria Canada, aboard Bucanero.

La Brisa's Successful Rescue Mission

These three men are extremely fortunate, they were out in their privately owned panga off of Lands End, about two miles offshore, when their boat broke down.  They were local guys and did not have a radio on board or GPS.  One of the guys did have a cell phone and managed to call a friend who was a fisherman, to say they were in trouble and were about two miles off of Cabo, but could not give him an exact location.  The fisherman friend put a message out on the radio saying there was a panga broken down and drifting to keep an eye out.  At the same time ten boats begin a search and rescue mission.  Pisces La Brisa was done with their fishing day and started to head in with a group from Argentina on board.  Fernando Noyola is one of our youngest deckhands, so has sharper eyes than anybody, he thought he spotted something on the horizon.  Nobody else could see anything but he insisted there was something there and asked the clients if they would mind checking it out.  They detoured and headed out to the spot Fernando indicted and sure enough it was the disabled panga.  They had drifted fourteen miles out in just a few hours! As you can imagine they were extremely relieved.  When asked why they went to check it out, instead of heading home for a Sunday afternoon rest, Fernando replied “It was those guys today, you never know when it might be you."

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament Update: Day 1

TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Los Cabos Billfish Tournament is about to start their second day of fishing. Day one produced one qualifying billfish from the 14 teams participating.  Team Reel Gold, a 35 ft Cabo landed a 365 lb blue marlin making them the front runners. Team Estrella Del Norte landed a beautiful 180 lb tuna - these tuna experts look set to hold onto the Tuna Division lead, but let's see what happens in the next 48 hours. Only one qualifying dorado weighed in a little over 25 lbs on Minerva II. Ten billfish total for day one, 4 blue marlin, with just the one qualifier and six striped marlin released.  Day One winning fish photos below.

 

This is the Season of Los Cabos Fishing Tournaments!

October brings along a fantastic weather, with lots of traditional events, from Sammy Hagar’s birthday bash to Halloween’s big time celebrations, but let’s not forget the origins of Los Cabos: fishing!  Even though fishing is the sport you can practice every month in Baja, October is still the season where fishermen from all over the world flock to Los Cabos in hopes to catch the world’s biggest marlin & tuna, and not the least - to have lots of fun in the sun.

These are the Los Cabos fishing events you shouldn’t miss this upcoming fishing season:

1.       Los Cabos Billfish Tournament: 14 - 18 October, 2014 

The 16th annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament is set to open the fishing tournament’s season.  It takes place on October 14 to 18, 2014, with actual fishing dates Oct 15, 16 & 17.  Participating teams will hit the water Wednesday, October 15, in hopes of earning some of the estimated $750,000 in cash and prizes by releasing the most billfish or catching the largest marlin, tuna, wahoo and dorado during the tournament’s three days of fishing. Weigh-ins and billfish release video check-in will be at the IGY Marina in Cabo San Lucas Waterfront next to the ramp at the marina office.  Winners receive an invitation to represent the tournament at the next IGFA Offshore World Championship. www.LosCabosBillfishTournament.com.

2.       Los Cabos Offshore Tournament: 17 - 19 October, 2014

This tournament pits anglers in a competition to top the previous year’s record, also known as the little Bisbee,  actual fishing takes place over two days, Saturday and Sunday and is seen as a great warm up for the main event – don’t be surprised though, this tournament can also payout a lot of money.  Cash prizes are awarded to the top three teams as well as the teams that catch the largest fish in three eligible billfish species.  Winners receive an invitation to represent the tournament at the next IGFA Offshore World Championship. www.bisbees.com

3.       Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament: 21 - 25 October, 2014

Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament is deemed the “world’s richest billfish tournament” with over $4 million in prize money.  Anglers from all over the world converge in Los Cabos to compete for a record marlin.  A traditional dramatic shotgun kicks off this fishing tournament featuring big cash prizes.  As they say, come for the fun, leave a millionaire. www.bisbees.com

4.       W.O.N. Tuna Tournament: 5 - 8 November, 2014

Pancho, the local sea lion and consummate beggar, is back!

You were asking us about Pancho, our local sea-lion and consummate beggar.  He disappeared after the storm but showed up a few days ago and we were glad to know he was safe and sound! 

But it wasn’t long before he was up to his old tricks: look what he did yesterday!  Pictured above are Christopher, Kevin and Ritch from Florida, who had a fantastic day aboard Tiburon, Pisces newest 31 ft. Bertram.  They caught &released 4 striped marlins (80-100 lbs), and caught and released several mahi mahis (dorados), and were already planning a fantastic dinner, but Pancho sneaked up on them and stole one fish!  He does look a little bit slimmer now, don't you think? Probably because he had to catch his own meals for a few weeks!

Father & Son Cabo San Lucas Tradition: Fishing

This past weekend we had an amazing time fishing and enjoying the perfect Cabo weather!  On Saturday we joined Stephen and Steve, father and son, on their Cabo fishing trip in search of tuna, sailfish and then some, and boy did we have fun!  Seems father & son fishing trips are a lucky combination, as our anglers caught a yellowfin tuna, a sailfish (catch & release) and 10 dorados, some released and some kept some for dinner.  One of the best father & son Cabo traditions and we look forward for the next trip with Stephen and Steve!

Making Dreams Come True

Not only is Cabo still standing we are continuing to make people’s dreams come true.

Pictured above are Henrik and Jane, who had their trip planned for a long time and they were coming a long way, all the way from Denmark in fact.  So they didn’t want a hurricane to get in the way of a goal that Henrik had been chasing for over 25 years and that  had taken him to such places as Guatemala, Galapagos, New Zealand, Australia and Thailand without success.

Despite a difficult journey to get here,  on Henrik and Jane’s second day of fishing with Pisces, they finally reached the goal that Henrik and dreamed of since he was a boy, to catch a blue marlin. Not only did he catch a blue marlin, but a sailfish too, along with some nice dorado. He was typically Danish stoic as we chatted to him early this morning, but was very happy as he told us that he had read Hemmingway’s Old Man and the Sea several times and hoped he would get another one today.

Cabo Strong

Everybody wants to leave the hurricane behind but we were given this photo today and had to publish it.  It says so much - it is a symbol of the resilience of the people of Cabo and the fishing community and a reminder that the mighty marlin & fishing is the foundation of what our town is built upon, something that Hurricane Odile could not overcome.  

We bumped into a couple of tourists today on the marina, who had arrived on the first flight by Alaska Air out of Los Angeles.  They told us that they were blown away by the reception they received, with mariachis playing as they got off the plane and about a hundred people to greet them; the young lady said it made her cry - but truly we are all excited to see our beloved anglers and tourists.

Fishing Report: September 29th to Oct 1st, 2014

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%

BILLFISH & OTHER SPECIES: This fish report does not follow our regular format as we have not been conducting normal business due to Hurricane Odile and now post hurricane lack of visitors.

As mentioned on our websites and posts, all of the Pisces boats are fine with only 60 ft Shambala suffering some minor fiberglass damage.

Since the storm we have had three trips so far, all of which were successful.

On September 29th Sean & Craig from Denver, Colorado went out aboard Bill Collector and caught 25 dorado (some released)  just off the Old Lighthouse.

Next day out Henry and Joe from Mount Pleasant, Missouri were aboard C Rod  our 38 ft Blackfin. They were determined to make it to Cabo to fish as it was Henry’s birthday.  Cabo did not disappoint and Henry was able to reel in a 300 lb blue marlin that took him and hour and a half to bring to the boat after it took a live skipjack at the Cabrillo Sea Mount.  Joe was fortunate to release a striped marlin that took a caballito.

On October 1st Henry and Joe headed out once again aboard C Rod this time going the opposite direction, off of the Old Lighthouse.  It wasn’t long before Captain Abel had each of them hooked up to striped marlin, this time on ballyhoo.  The fish were between 90 and 130 lbs and successfully released, while two dorado were kept for the table.  It was an exciting day as they had actually hooked a blue marlin that got away, plus an additional two striped marlin that jumped off.

Pisces anglers had a 100% catch success rate consisting of 3 striped marlin, 1 blue marlin and 27 dorado.

Fantastic Fishing Continues - Marlin for Birthday and Then Some

Henry and Jose were out on their second fishing trip in Cabo with us aboard the C Rod and were our third charter after the hurricane.  On their first trip Henry got a blue marlin on his birthday, which is hard to top, but  C Rod pulled it off again and they caught and released two striped marlin, as well as losing two other stripers and an approximate 250 lb blue marlin that got away.  They did keep a couple of nice dorado for the table though.

As you can imagine, we are all thrilled to see visitors and the office staff got in on the photo with the anglers, including Daisy the Pisces Pug, who seemed to think that blue marlin head mount was real and was going to swallow her.

First Fish Caught After Hurricane Odile

• Yea.....OUR FIRST FISHING TRIP AFTER ODILE, yesterday we had our first clients go out after the hurricane aboard Bill Collector: Sean Haberberger, Craig Harris & Tage Gill from Denver Colorado, had a great time catching a bunch of dorado up to 25 lbs on live sardines off of the Old Lighthouse. Everybody was so thrilled, that Captain Tony's cooked their fish for free and they had a huge welcoming committee with smiling faces.

  

  
  

  

   

  SECOND DAY FISHING FOR PISCES AND FIRST BLUE MARLIN...we only had one boat out, the C Rod, with anglers from Mt. Pleasant , Missouri. Henry Rozak flew in to La Paz and got ground transportation to Cabo (1.5 hours) to celebrate his birthday... board C Rod, where he caught his first blue marlin, on his birthday that weighed 300 lbs. His friend, Joe Strauss was able to release a striped marlin. The blue took a live skipjack and the striped a live caballito. The blue took 1.5 hours to bring to the boat which Henry decided to keep to share the meat with local fisherman and their families.

With reference to your upcoming fishing trip:

We are reconfirming your fishing trip at this time.

Yes, Cabo was hit by a hurricane on September 14^th but things are getting back on track very quickly.

At this time communications are limited but we are receiving your messages and emails.

All of our Pisces boats are fine and have suffered no damage and our crews are eager to get out fishing.

A couple of the crew members had some damage to their homes, but nobody was hurt.

Many Cabo hotels are due to re-open on October 1^st.

If your hotel will not be ready (many had many windows broken) please let us know so that we can assist in finding you alternative accommodation.

Hotel Wyndham on the marina had minimal damage and is priced attractively, we also have some very nice units at the fabulous Hacienda that did not have any damage. These beautiful units will be available at a special rate for Pisces clients for the next few months.

We really want to encourage you to go ahead with your travel plans to Cabo which is how you can best help the people of Cabo after this difficult time.
