Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 05th to March 11th 2016

BILLFISH: We have kept the same numbers that we had last week, the billfish is getting a bit closer over the Pacific side, despite the cold front that came from the North at the beginning of the week, with 28 mph heavy winds and unusual dust storms that kept us away from fishing one day, we managed to have billfish and inshore action!  Pisces 35ft “Listo” ran to Los Arcos, 15 miles over the Pacific side and reeled a 130 lb Striped Marlin for Steve Murchin, Colton Sudberry and Jason Rogers from San Diego, California.  Pisces 25ft “Poseidon” panga got two Marlin and Spanish mackerel with live bait at El Faro for Steve Kovach and John Massotust from California.  Pisces “Yahoo” 42ft Bertram did a great job and found a 180lb Striper at Los Arcos for Cliff Cook, Sam Smiley and Alan Wood visiting from Columbus, Ohio.  Pisces 28ft “Andrea” with Captain Orlando, got tight lines for the Koontz family from Mount Jackson, Virginia releasing a Striped Marlin at Los Arcos.  Pisces 31ft “Rebecca” got two Striped Marlin, estimated weight 130lbs at Margaritas spot for Scott Tudor, Heidi Lee and Nick Pinson from Seattle, Wa.  Both marlins were successfully released!  Pisces 31ft “Tracy Ann” released two good size Stripers estimated weight 150lbs, one Grouper and Lady Fish with mackerel bait for James McGuirk, Ryan Nolan and Tyler Wiebe visiting from Newbury Park, California.  On March 10th Pisces 31ft “Ruthless” traveled to Pozo Cota and spot Striped Marlin and Jack Crevalle for Sam and Keri Montgomery from Colorado Springs, Co.  Finally “Yahoo” 42ft Bertram again, released another Striped Marlin at El Faro for Douglas Ricken and Tanya Brockwell from Raleigh, North Carolina.  Thirty percent of the Pisces anglers caught 15 Striped Marlin, all successfully released with the exception of one Marlin.

OTHER SPECIES: Last week it was trigger fish all over!  This time is the turn for Jack Crevalle or toros (bull in Spanish), being the main catch for inshore, with sizes  from the 10 to 30lbs.  This fish is really fun to catch and excellent to eat. Along with it we have seen Trigger fish, Grouper, Spanish mackerel, Pompano and Rooster mainly all located over Margaritas, Migriño, Pozo Cota and Los Arcos over the Pacific side.  Only one vessel got a 30lb Dorado aboard the 35ft Pisces “Listo” with mackerel live bait at Los Arcos for the group of Chandler Vogel from Virginia.  Pisces 46ft “Attitude Adjusment” released three Jacks and a Rooster (20-30 lbs) at La Antena for the Maloney Family visiting from East Hanover, New Jersey.  Pisces 42ft “Hot Rod” hooked five Jacks ranging from 15 to 20lbs and twenty Roosters from 15 to 35 lbs using rapalas, cuchis and live bait at Pozo Cota.  All released!  Pisces 38ft “Speedwell” had good fun reeling six Roosters and four Jacks for Richard Hutchinson, Ron Peaseleg, Todd Guptill, Zach Guptill, Dylan Hutchinson and Sarah Guimond all visiting from Maine.  Pisces 32ft “Bill Collector” ran 20 miles out from El Faro and got three 20lbs Yellow fin tunas using cedar plus for David Kersten´s group from Portland, Oregon and “C Rod” 38ft managed the same action with five 25lbs yellow fin tunas in Migriño, using live bait for Rob Chimko´s group from Vancouver, California.  Both groups were very lucky!  Pisces 31ft “Tiburon” got a Pilot shark, two Sea bass and six Lady Fish in Migriño for Michael Mains, Eric Messmer and Josh Bailey from Utah.  Fifty percent of our Pisces anglers got a huge variety of inshore fishing and the 19% percent combined of our anglers Mahi-Mahi and Yellow fin tuna.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Dec 12 - 18, 2015

BILLFISH: Ho, ho ho!, it feels like Christmas time in Cabo and it looks the billfish have spread out between the steady Pacific side and some parts of Cabo, more specifically between Chileno and Cabo del Sol this week.  “Valerie” Pisces 35ft had a nice day reeling in a Striped Marlin estimated at 180 lbs., one dorado and a small tuna for Peter Karras, Carlos Goncalves and Jomar Labuschagne, visiting Cabo for the first time, coming from Portugal and South Africa!  Pisces “Cabolero” 31ft released a striped Marlin in San Jaime Bank for Jesse & Julie Prather, Mike Summers and Tim Burgarner from Caldwell, Idaho. “Poseidon” Pisces 25ft panga is not a big boat, but nevertheless kept lines busy with a Striped Marlin and four dorado up to 20lbs. for Elbert and Betty Bivins from Jackson, at the Cerros de Arena, on the Pacific side.  Pisces “Tiburon” 31ft also had a great day for a group of Swedish angling friends: Bernt Olson, Nicholas Lund, Sten Gumar and Kjell Kironvall who fought two Striped Marlins and a Sailfish in the same area. “Ruthless” 31ft Bertram headed to La Ballena, over on the Pacific and released a Striped Marlin and two dorados for Kurtis, Shayne and Tyler Millhollin visiting from beautiful Santa Barbara, Ca. “Speedwell” 38ft Pisces reeled two Striped Marlin and three dorados in San Cristobal and Pozo  Cota for Mike, Anna, Tom and Kevin Cole from Sacramento, Ca. good job Captain Piranha!  “Rebecca” Pisces 31ft reeled a Blue Marlin 200 lbs. estimated weight, the crew used a “flying” lure (volador) at the 11.50 spot for more Swedish anglers: Ola Eklund, Johan Ingenmansson and Peter Mucander, good job!  Another Blue and Striped Marlin released aboard “Bill Collector” 32ft Pisces, estimated weight 200 lbs. the crew used the volador lure as well for Frank, Neil an Nancy Muller visiting  from Woodland, California.  On December 17th the “Adriana" and the “Andrea” 28ft ´s Pisces boats did a back to back releasing  two striped marlin outside of the Cerro, for Brian, David, Joselyn & Matt Berry from Grant Bay, Ca. and Brian & Mitchell Sussman from Los Angeles, Ca. respectively.  Finally on December 18th the “Yahoo” 42ft Bertram released two Striped Marlin between 120-130 lbs. outside of the Cerro  for Charlene and John Hattner de Keller, Texas and Jonathan Beyeler from Broadway, Va.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 64 Billfish this week with most successfully released consisting of 58 Striped Marlin, 3 Sailfish and 3 Blue Marlin.

 

 

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado still being quite steady, ranging sizes from 10 to 30 lbs. “Adriana” 28ft Pisces got four dorados  at Migriño for Jeff & Sam Smith from Corpus Christy and Othis Johnson from Houston, Texas.  “Valerie” 35ft Pisces got three dorados with live bait in Pozo Cota for Kathy Sherman from Cheyenne, Wyoming and Linda & Burt Black from Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Captain Ray & Fernando aboard “La Brisa” 31ft Pisces reeled four mahi-mahi estimated 15-30 lbs., at el Cerro del Golden for John Summer group visiting from Camden, Delaware.  “Shambala” 60ft vessel caught five dorados in Margaritas for Alan & Austin Jenkins, Carter Powell & Francis Straw from Sacramento, Ca. and the “Andrea” 28ft Pisces brought six dorados at La Ballena for Jeremy & John Highfill from Fairbanks, Alaska.  Panga “Poseidon” did reel a 35lbs wahoo in front of Cabo del Sol for Jeff Smith group and the “Adriana” 28ft Pisces brought another wahoo 20lbs. at Migriño.  Pangas has been quite successful for Marlin, wahoo and tunas; Panga 23ft “Jessica” Pisces got for the Bivins group six yellow fin tunas, football sizes and really good for lunch. Pisces clients got a total of 81 dorados, 14 tunas and 4 wahoos, representing the 43% for dorado  and the 12% for the Other species.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report July 11 - 17, 2015

BILLFISH:  This week we have a much shorter report than normal as the port was closed for three days due to the proximity of hurricane Dolores.  The storm caused no ill effects in Cabo except for big surf and a smattering or rain but as a precaution the boats were told to stay in, leaving many anglers frustrated as they didn’t get to fish.  The fishing was exactly as it should be at this time of year, with a bit of a drop on striped marlin and an increase on blue marlin and sailfish.  We had several blue marlin this week; David Gonzalez from Houston, got a nice fish on Speedwell as did the Bowen family from Emmett Idaho, who caught a blue marlin estimated at 160 lbs. at the 95 spot aboard Rebecca.  July 13th saw 28 ft. Andrea catch a 300 lb. blue marlin at the Herradura on an orange and black lure for Claude & Kathy Callahan from Virginia.  This same day Tracy Ann had a smaller blue in the same area for Houston anglers, the Villarreal family.  Surprise of the week was for Cody Jeffcott from North Carolina, who had rented a panga by himself; he was shocked to catch a 360 lb. blue marlin just five miles off of Lands’ End as well as four tuna and two dorado. Buddies Jaxon Bates and Brad Jacobs from Boise, Idaho & Snohomish, WA, respectively were thrilled with the fishing and service they received aboard Tracy Ann where they were able to release a striped marlin each in the 120 lb. class on July 14th.  The majority of the fishing was on the Pacific side this week with a good success rate, though there were some boats “skunked” mostly those who opted for half days.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 27 billfish this week consisting of 17 striped marlin, 5 sailfish & 5 blue marlin.

OTHER SPECIES:  It was nice to see the dorado starting to appear this week – right on time for the Dorado Shoot Out at Los Barriles and another dorado tournament out of Cabo San Lucas.  The fish however tended to be on the small side, though some medium size fish were caught, such as a 25 lb. fish on Rebecca who had a total of ten ranging in weight from 10 lbs. upwards to the largest mentioned here.  Some of the dorado were as small as 3 or 4 lbs. and were released. Our total dorado catch was of 68 fish with some boats catching as many as fourteen in a day.  Tuna catches were of small school size fish with catches of between one and thirteen fish for thirty seven percent of our charters.  No real size to any of the tuna this week in the Cabo area, though we did hear of a 300 lb. plus tuna out of San Jose.  With the big surf inshore fishing was not great but we did catch triggerfish, skipjacks and needle fish.  A few wahoo were caught whilst trolling but none over 40 lbs.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Port closed three days, big waves, partly cloudy skies, seas now flat.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 20 - 27, 2015

BILLFISH:  It was definitely feast or famine this week but we can see the fishing is gradually getting better.  More boats reported spotting multiple marlin but generally had a hard time getting them interested in bait.  On the other hand we had some boats that did exceptionally well.  Catch of the week has to go to Tracy Ann and for anglers Jason Jones, Steve Hawkins & Fred Gabel from Chico, California.  On March 26th this trio was fishing at Cerros de Arena on the Pacific side when they hooked a black marlin – very unusual for this time of year - the fish was estimated at 210 lbs. and released healthy; they then went on to release two striped marlin in the 60 to 100 lbs. class.  All three fish took live caballito – thanks guys for releasing all three fish.  Not far behind Tracy Ann this week was the ever popular Rebecca who had an outstanding day on March 25th for a group from Oceanside, California, when they released four striped marlin between Margaritas and Los Arcos.  The fish were between 80 and 110 lbs. and were hooked on live bait.  Another boat that did very well earlier in the week was La Brisa with Bart Findley and friends on board from Blue Springs, Mo.  They went up quite a way up the Sea of Cortez coastline, to Destiladeras where they managed to release three striped marlin in the 60 to 130 lb. class. These catches show that the marlin are on the small side, so it looks like there are a lot of juveniles around.  There were several boats that had double marlin days though quite a lot of boats were “skunked” too.  These catches give us hope that the billfish catches will stabilize soon and become more consistent as the watchword lately has been “inconsistent”.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 35 billfish this week with 34 released.

OTHER SPECIES:  Most of the smaller game this week consisted of inshore species such as sierra and skipjacks, with a few groupers and nice yellowtail thrown in.  We also saw several small mako sharks, 20-50 lbs. released.  A couple of small wahoo were caught, but nothing over 30 lbs.  Dorado catches slowed way down with just six caught total for our fleet and tuna catches similar.  The anglers aboard Valerie on March 22nd, weren’t concerned about the size of their catch but were glad to have action for everybody on board as they caught twelve skipjacks, releasing four.  Bill Collector had a nice mixed day for Trey Parker and friends from Plano, Texas, with a mako shark, skipjack and striped marlin released at Destiladeras on March 27th.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Warmer than usual, clear skies, windy on the Pacific, some swell late in the week.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 7 - 13, 2015

BILLFISH:  We had some good catches this week but were plagued with inconsistency.  Some days every boat had a marlin then the next they caught nothing as the fish moved around and refused to be tempted by the bait offered.  Our top boat this week was 28 ft Adriana on March 8th for anglers Robert & Paul Henry from San Diego.  They released three striped marlin and caught three dorado – perhaps it was something to do with Captain J.R from the Rebecca going out as the mate that day.  A couple of days later this same boat, with the regular crew managed to release two marlin and catch a dorado at Cerros de Arena for Scott Pruitt and family from Dallas, Texas.  Nathan Hawes fished a little further with Devon McCleery, from North Carolina aboard the Rebecca this same day and were fortunate to release a striped marlin each in the 100 to 140 lb class on live caballito.  The only other boat that had more than one marlin was Bill Collector  with two on March 9th both on live bait at Cabeza deBallena for Gerry Rosales fishing with Mario and Carter from Atlanta, Georgia.  There was no set game plan to be able to catch marlin this week, as they were spread out and not always hungry.  Thirty five percent of our boats caught marlin this week with 28 fish released.

OTHER SPECIES:  We are so thankful for the dorado which have been the mainstay of the Cabo fishery over the past couple of months.  This species was again the most widely caught sportfish with fifty percent of boats out  catching one to seven fish in the 10 to 20 lb class.  La Brisa was had the best catch, which was seven fish in one day  at Las Margaritas for the Hughes family from Richmond, Virginia – all of their fish were caught on lures.  Our total tally on dorado was eighty three fish.  A lot of skipjack both the black and white variety were caught inshore as well as some yellowtail, sierra and snappers. The only wahoo of the week was 25 lbs and caught aboard Yahoo. 

LOCATION:  Mostly Pacific off of Lighthouse, Migrino, Gaspareno, some days on the Cortez side, at Cabeza de Ballena and even as far as Destiladeras.

WEATHER CONDITIONS:  Mostly clear skies, windy most days, average seas.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, green colores, tigrillo.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Jan 17-23, 2015

Numbers at a glance: Billfish 13%, Dorado 85%, Tuna 8%, Other 35%

BILLFISH:  The billfish have been relatively slow for this time of the year.  We’ve been scratching our heads a little bit about this, so we took a look back to compare to the last few years fishing through this season.  We’ve found some interesting factors that may be affecting our marlin catches.  These are of course, that the water is still pretty warm for this time of year, reaching temperatures as high as 78 F in some areas.  It also seems that there is not as much mackerel and ballyhoo in our waters as other years, and we’ve found this to be the bait of choice throughout this season for marlin.  There are big schools of bait that we’ve come across and have seen marlin, but many times they are just not hungry enough.  But, how about those two BIG blues caught just a week ago weighing around 700 lbs each?  We must say, the marlin have a mind of their own, and are obviously around just a little bit harder to find, for now.  Instances like these really show how little we know about the species and why research and conservation are increasingly important. 

With all that said, we did manage to catch a few striped marlin this week.  Twenty-five foot panga Diablo Loco showed us that size doesn’t necessarily matter when it comes to fishing.  David and Pamela from Colorado had a spectacular day, catching one striped marlin, two dorados, one redsnapper, one grouper and one bonita all on caballito bait between Solmar and Pedregal.

Bill Collector had an even more spectacular day, if that’s possible, with anglers Kelly and Jeff from Minnesota catching and releasing one decently sized 180 lb. striped marlin on live caballito out of Las Margaritas.  They also caught six dorados, ten sierras and one wahoo on green and blue/white lures.

OTHER SPECIES:  What haven’t been hard to find this week have been dorado.  In comparison with the last three years, we’ve seen an increase of up to 45% in catches for dorado during this same season.  On the other hand, as with the marlin, the tuna catches have been lower, where in 2014 we had a 40% catch success rate for this same week in January, and a 79% catch success rate in 2013, this week we only saw 8% of boats catch tuna.  The lower tuna catches may also be due to the fact that there is so much dorado and wahoo that anglers are going out looking for them, since they are relatively close to shore, where as the tuna are usually found far out.  Unless of course you get lucky and find a pod of dolphins hanging out with them, as was the case for the thirty-five foot Valerie and anglers from Florida, who caught ten yellowfin tuna ranging from 10-20 lbs out of the Pozo Cota. They also caught one dorado around 10 lbs in the same area.

In the case of the Andrea, they went out looking for tuna and found it 13 miles out of Gaspareno, catching twelve total on hoochis. They also caught six dorados on caballito bait. 

The Tracy Ann had a dorado-filled day on Friday, catching 25 dorados between 15 and 25 lbs on both bait and lures (blue/white and black/red) out of Cerritos.  Catch limits were respected with ten successfully released.   

The Rebecca also landed quite a few dorados, twenty total, on caballito bait and blue/white and green lures out of Golden Gate. They also caught a nice wahoo, weighing 22 lbs.

The pangas proved themselves once again in catching the smaller game fish, with twenty-two foot panga Gloria catching fifteen sierras, one redsnapper, one pompano, and one mojarra.

Fishing Report, Oct 25 - 31, 2014

BILLFISH: 
This week got off to a great start, with an exciting catch on the C-ROD of a nice black marlin, by anglers from Beavercreek, Ohio.  Mark and William fought the 248 lbs black marlin for over two and a half hours before bringing it to the boat.  Not only this, but they also caught four striped marlin which they released, and two dorados.  The black marlin was caught on live bait out of Los Arcos, while the other marlin were caught at Pozo Cota.  Not bad for a day’s fishing!

The Rebecca and angler David from Puyallup, WA, had a good day on Tuesday, catching and releasing 5 striped marlin caught out of Las Margaritas on live bait.  Tom  from Snoqualmie, WA, was the lucky angler this week in terms of blue marlin.  He caught one of the only two blues of the week aboard the Halcon, which he released, weighing approximately 220 lbs.  He also managed to hook a dorado and a tuna weighing around 15 lbs.  Total billfish caught this week were 60 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin and 1 black marlin, all but one were released.

Nice wahoo 48 lbs caught on Ruthless.

OTHER SPECIES:
Coming to Cabo all the way from France, angler Luc and friends impressed us this week by catching the most dorado out of any boat, by far.  They caught 18 dorados, releasing nine.  Catch limits allow 2 dorado caught per angler.  The dorado were caught on caballito bait and lures, with Las Margaritas being one of the most productive locations.  The group also caught two striped marlin and one impressive wahoo around 40 lbs caught on a guacamayo lure.  

Next in line with most dorados caught this week were Ruthless and Bill Collector with 8 dorados each, all caught on caballito bait and green and blue lures.  As well as Anglers Ronald and Helen from Granbury, MO, who caught two striped marlin and five dorados on live bait and green and striped lures.  Cenk from Vienna, Austria, did well catching the small game fish, reeling in three dorados and two roosterfish on caballito bait off of Migrino.  Only two boats caught Wahoo this week, with anglers Linda and Terry from Oklahoma aboard the Rebecca, and Michael and George from Birmingham, AL, aboard the Ruthless, finding luck with their black and red lures.  Of course, the third wahoo was caught by our Frenchman Luc Trasglise on the Ruthless as well.  The three wahoo caught this week were caught on different days but were still all found in the Las Margaritas and Pozo Cota area.
 
Tuna this week were few and far between, but the Listo and its anglers Alan and Aleisha from Colorado managed to land a decent size yellowfin off of the Old Lighthouse, weighing 20 lbs.

 Total fish caught this week were 60 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin and 1 black marlin.  Dorado impressively topped the charts at  a whopping 135 fish this week, 4 tunas, 5 roosters and 3 wahoos.

Fishing Report: October 16th to 24st, 2014

BILLFISH: It was great to finally have anglers around the marina in more than a trickle and thankfully the fishing did not disappoint with multiple marlin catches and good amounts of smaller game.  Andrea got us off to a good start, when the crew helped Mark and his team Sasquatch, from Washington, catch and release four striped marlin and boat a dorado on October 18^th, whilst La Brisa followed up with three marlin releases this same day. James Jr and friends, from El Paso, Texas entered the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament aboard Attitude Adjustment and did extremely well to catch two blue marlin the same day at Destiladeras, unfortunately though, they were doubtful they would make the minimum weight of 300 lbs., estimating the fish at 220 and 270 lbs.  Respectively, which meant they went back into the water to put on a few more pounds for next year.  La Brisa with Argentine anglers on board, had the most unusual catch, by way of three local fishermen whose panga had broken down and drifted 14 miles –thanks to the sharp eyes of deckhand Fernando Noyola a tragedy was averted and they were towed back to port. Manuel from Cancun was out aboard C Rod during the Bisbee and had the same situation as Attitude Adjustment, they got the fish on, but they weren’t big enough – they released a 250 lb. blue marlin and a striped marlin the same day (Manuel you should have entered the released division like we suggested).  Pisces Valerie had Florida angler Roger on board on October 22^nd who was fortunate to catch and release a blue marlin as well as a tuna and a couple of dorado. Attitude Adjustment had their third blue marlin of the week on October 23^rd, this one estimated just shy of the 300 lb. qualifying tournament weight, at approximately 280 lbs., for Trent from Tomball, Texas.  Pisces Sportfishing anglers caught a total of 74 billfish this week, consisting of 63 striped marlin, 6 blue marlin and 5 sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado could be counted on most days to keep fishermen busy as they reeled in fish up to 30 lbs., with as many as eight being caught per boat.  The best place to find dorado was on the Pacific between Los Arcos and Migrino.  Roger from Inverness, Florida got a bit too much excitement on his second day out aboard Valerie they hooked a mako shark that the captain Roberto estimated to be 200 lbs., they wanted to release it and usually would cut the line as close to the hook as possible. Deckhand Salvador, known as “Pollo”, or chicken by the rest of the fleet, decided he didn’t want to lose a new, large hook, he thought the shark was stunned and reached down to try and free the hook – big mistake, the shark sprang into action and caught his arm, leaving him a souvenir of a tooth embedded in his forearm and a nasty cut.  Thankfully he was not seriously hurt but did new a few stitches… puts a whole new meaning on “chicken (pollo) of the sea and the shoe was definitely on the other foot!   Tuna catches were at thirteen percent but anglers were not seriously after them, nevertheless we did see some come in, with Mark C. having a nice catch of eight of them, with the largest 82 lbs.  Our Argentine group headed up by Mariano de la Rua had several days of great fishing and wanted to try inshore one day aboard Rebecca. They did well catching and releasing a couple of roosterfish, a red snapper, grouper, needlefish, five skipjacks and a couple of bonita.  We had several wahoo this week, with the largest 48 lbs. caught aboard Ruthless.

Fishing Report: October 8th to 16st, 2014

BILLFISH: It’s great to finally have something to write about as boats gradually begin to get out fishing after the hurricane.  Fisherman are hardy, not easily deterred by  and are slowly trickling back into Cabo to take advantage of the fabulous fishing that the month of October offers.  Some of the first anglers to visit Cabo, came all the way from Denmark; Henrik had fished all over the world trying to catch a blue marlin on what had been a 25 year mission, but all it took was for him to come to Cabo to realize his dream.  He released his 150 lb blue along with a sailfish at Punta Gorda, aboard Pisces La Brisa on October 9th.  Florida anglers Christopher, Kevin & Rich had an amazing time aboard our new 31 ft Bertram Tiburon on October 13th , when they released four striped marlin and caught fifteen dorado, of which five were released and one was stolen by Pancho the sea lion.  Jeffrey and Cassandra from Eagan, Minnesota had a fabulous day aboard La Brisa, where they were kept busy catching and releasing two striped marlin and a sailfish, as well as reeling in five dorado.  Tiburon continued on a roll and managed to release a sailfish and catch sixteen dorado, for Jessie and Amanda, from Lafayette, Louisiana at Los Arcos – but they ran into the same problem, a sea lion thief.  Basically the catches this week had the same pattern, usually a single striped marlin or sailfish, combined with a bunch of dorado.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 23 billfish this week consisting of 18 striped marlin, 1 blue marlin and 4 sailfish, all released except for the blue that died and one other striper that was kept.

OTHER SPECIES:  Dorado was by far and away the top sportfish this week, with seventy nine percent of Pisces charters catching from one to seventeen fish in a day.  This is common for this time of year and also after a storm, when they congregate under floating debris.  The best catches of dorado were on the Pacific side from Los Arcos to Migrino and Pozo de Cota, with weights from 10 to 30 lbs.  They liked live caballito and sardines as well as a variety of lures – in other words they are hungry.  Tuna catches were slow, but that is because nobody is targeting them with dorado and billfish being so close.  There was one large one in the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament that weighed 180 lbs, so we know they are out there.  Cabolero was very fortunate to catch two wahoo for Edward and Williarm as well as thirteen dorado – size on the wahoo was not great at 20 lbs, but any size wahoo is tasty.  The only other catches we had were those of a few skipjacks.

Fishing Report: September 29th to Oct 1st, 2014

BILLFISH & OTHER SPECIES: This fish report does not follow our regular format as we have not been conducting normal business due to Hurricane Odile and now post hurricane lack of visitors.

As mentioned on our websites and posts, all of the Pisces boats are fine with only 60 ft Shambala suffering some minor fiberglass damage.

Since the storm we have had three trips so far, all of which were successful.

On September 29th Sean & Craig from Denver, Colorado went out aboard Bill Collector and caught 25 dorado (some released)  just off the Old Lighthouse.

Next day out Henry and Joe from Mount Pleasant, Missouri were aboard C Rod  our 38 ft Blackfin. They were determined to make it to Cabo to fish as it was Henry’s birthday.  Cabo did not disappoint and Henry was able to reel in a 300 lb blue marlin that took him and hour and a half to bring to the boat after it took a live skipjack at the Cabrillo Sea Mount.  Joe was fortunate to release a striped marlin that took a caballito.

On October 1st Henry and Joe headed out once again aboard C Rod this time going the opposite direction, off of the Old Lighthouse.  It wasn’t long before Captain Abel had each of them hooked up to striped marlin, this time on ballyhoo.  The fish were between 90 and 130 lbs and successfully released, while two dorado were kept for the table.  It was an exciting day as they had actually hooked a blue marlin that got away, plus an additional two striped marlin that jumped off.

Pisces anglers had a 100% catch success rate consisting of 3 striped marlin, 1 blue marlin and 27 dorado.
