Father & Son Cabo San Lucas Tradition: Fishing

This past weekend we had an amazing time fishing and enjoying the perfect Cabo weather!  On Saturday we joined Stephen and Steve, father and son, on their Cabo fishing trip in search of tuna, sailfish and then some, and boy did we have fun!  Seems father & son fishing trips are a lucky combination, as our anglers caught a yellowfin tuna, a sailfish (catch & release) and 10 dorados, some released and some kept some for dinner.  One of the best father & son Cabo traditions and we look forward for the next trip with Stephen and Steve!

Making Dreams Come True

Not only is Cabo still standing we are continuing to make people’s dreams come true.

Pictured above are Henrik and Jane, who had their trip planned for a long time and they were coming a long way, all the way from Denmark in fact.  So they didn’t want a hurricane to get in the way of a goal that Henrik had been chasing for over 25 years and that  had taken him to such places as Guatemala, Galapagos, New Zealand, Australia and Thailand without success.

Despite a difficult journey to get here,  on Henrik and Jane’s second day of fishing with Pisces, they finally reached the goal that Henrik and dreamed of since he was a boy, to catch a blue marlin. Not only did he catch a blue marlin, but a sailfish too, along with some nice dorado. He was typically Danish stoic as we chatted to him early this morning, but was very happy as he told us that he had read Hemmingway’s Old Man and the Sea several times and hoped he would get another one today.

Cabo Strong

Everybody wants to leave the hurricane behind but we were given this photo today and had to publish it.  It says so much - it is a symbol of the resilience of the people of Cabo and the fishing community and a reminder that the mighty marlin & fishing is the foundation of what our town is built upon, something that Hurricane Odile could not overcome.  

We bumped into a couple of tourists today on the marina, who had arrived on the first flight by Alaska Air out of Los Angeles.  They told us that they were blown away by the reception they received, with mariachis playing as they got off the plane and about a hundred people to greet them; the young lady said it made her cry - but truly we are all excited to see our beloved anglers and tourists.

Fishing Report: September 29th to Oct 1st, 2014

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%

BILLFISH & OTHER SPECIES: This fish report does not follow our regular format as we have not been conducting normal business due to Hurricane Odile and now post hurricane lack of visitors.

As mentioned on our websites and posts, all of the Pisces boats are fine with only 60 ft Shambala suffering some minor fiberglass damage.

Since the storm we have had three trips so far, all of which were successful.

On September 29th Sean & Craig from Denver, Colorado went out aboard Bill Collector and caught 25 dorado (some released)  just off the Old Lighthouse.

Next day out Henry and Joe from Mount Pleasant, Missouri were aboard C Rod  our 38 ft Blackfin. They were determined to make it to Cabo to fish as it was Henry’s birthday.  Cabo did not disappoint and Henry was able to reel in a 300 lb blue marlin that took him and hour and a half to bring to the boat after it took a live skipjack at the Cabrillo Sea Mount.  Joe was fortunate to release a striped marlin that took a caballito.

On October 1st Henry and Joe headed out once again aboard C Rod this time going the opposite direction, off of the Old Lighthouse.  It wasn’t long before Captain Abel had each of them hooked up to striped marlin, this time on ballyhoo.  The fish were between 90 and 130 lbs and successfully released, while two dorado were kept for the table.  It was an exciting day as they had actually hooked a blue marlin that got away, plus an additional two striped marlin that jumped off.

Pisces anglers had a 100% catch success rate consisting of 3 striped marlin, 1 blue marlin and 27 dorado.

Fantastic Fishing Continues - Marlin for Birthday and Then Some

Henry and Jose were out on their second fishing trip in Cabo with us aboard the C Rod and were our third charter after the hurricane.  On their first trip Henry got a blue marlin on his birthday, which is hard to top, but  C Rod pulled it off again and they caught and released two striped marlin, as well as losing two other stripers and an approximate 250 lb blue marlin that got away.  They did keep a couple of nice dorado for the table though.

As you can imagine, we are all thrilled to see visitors and the office staff got in on the photo with the anglers, including Daisy the Pisces Pug, who seemed to think that blue marlin head mount was real and was going to swallow her.

First Fish Caught After Hurricane Odile

• Yea.....OUR FIRST FISHING TRIP AFTER ODILE, yesterday we had our first clients go out after the hurricane aboard Bill Collector: Sean Haberberger, Craig Harris & Tage Gill from Denver Colorado, had a great time catching a bunch of dorado up to 25 lbs on live sardines off of the Old Lighthouse. Everybody was so thrilled, that Captain Tony's cooked their fish for free and they had a huge welcoming committee with smiling faces.

  

  
  

  

   

  SECOND DAY FISHING FOR PISCES AND FIRST BLUE MARLIN...we only had one boat out, the C Rod, with anglers from Mt. Pleasant , Missouri. Henry Rozak flew in to La Paz and got ground transportation to Cabo (1.5 hours) to celebrate his birthday... board C Rod, where he caught his first blue marlin, on his birthday that weighed 300 lbs. His friend, Joe Strauss was able to release a striped marlin. The blue took a live skipjack and the striped a live caballito. The blue took 1.5 hours to bring to the boat which Henry decided to keep to share the meat with local fisherman and their families.

With reference to your upcoming fishing trip:

We are reconfirming your fishing trip at this time.

Yes, Cabo was hit by a hurricane on September 14^th but things are getting back on track very quickly.

At this time communications are limited but we are receiving your messages and emails.

All of our Pisces boats are fine and have suffered no damage and our crews are eager to get out fishing.

A couple of the crew members had some damage to their homes, but nobody was hurt.

Many Cabo hotels are due to re-open on October 1^st.

If your hotel will not be ready (many had many windows broken) please let us know so that we can assist in finding you alternative accommodation.

Hotel Wyndham on the marina had minimal damage and is priced attractively, we also have some very nice units at the fabulous Hacienda that did not have any damage. These beautiful units will be available at a special rate for Pisces clients for the next few months.

We really want to encourage you to go ahead with your travel plans to Cabo which is how you can best help the people of Cabo after this difficult time.

Fish Report Aug 30th to Sep 5th, 2014

BILLFISH: Although the week was cut short because of hurricane Norbert’s arrival, we still got off to a good start with all except for one boat (the anglers got seasick) catching fish on Saturday. The catch of the day was dorado, with all boats catching anywhere from 3 to 15 each. Dean Malhiot and friends from Calgary, Canada who fished on the Rebecca lead the way with 18! All were caught outside of Golden Gate. All this dorado made Cabolero the standout boat, which hooked and released the only marlin of the day. Geoffrey Simpson from Houston, Texas brought in the 180 lbs. striper in on live bait, out in front of Las Margaritas. Also caught on Cabolero that same day were 12 dorados, ranging from 10 to 20 lbs. The billfish catches did pick up a bit on the next day and throughout the week. Ben and Chelsea Allen from Fort Worth, Texas caught one striped marlin and one sailfish, both released, as well as two dorados and six skipjacks aboard the Flora-T.
Cabolero found itself once again to be positioned in the right area on Sunday, with anglers Hank Smith from Texas and Matt Herbert from California catching one sailfish around 70 lbs., one striped marlin around 140 lbs. and two dorados, all in the area of Golden Gate and Gaspareno.
Monday was a rough day for anglers as one boat had no luck due to seasickness and three others found themselves chasing after marlin and sailfish, which just wouldn’t bite. The Ruthless did land a blue marlin, and a pretty decent sized one at that, weighing approximately 250 lbs., which was released. Anglers Tanner Shultz and Clayton Ruszkowski from Alberta, Canada not only caught this blue, but also a striped marlin that they released, weighing approximately 130 lbs. and one skipjack.  Tuesday was sailfish day! Zachary Eastman from Atlanta, Georgia who fished on the Adriana caught two sailfish weighing around 100 lbs. each out at Cabrillo on caballito bait. The Tiburon and La Brisa also caught two sailfish around the same size, with La Brisa anglers Richard Pryor from Reno, NV and Phylis Horse from Susanville, CA reeling them in and releasing them at Punta Gorda instead. The Rebecca surprised us this day with Mike Pitts and Chris Reneger from Bryan, Texas, catching themselves a blue marlin around 250 lbs. and a striped marlin of about 120 lbs. which was released. Not only did they catch this, but also 14 yellowfin tunas from 10 to 25 lbs. caught on lures outside of the 200 spot. Marlin was caught on caballito bait.
On Wednesday, hurricane Norbert began to come closer and strengthen, making seas a little rougher, but fishing was unaffected by it this day. Daniel Ryan from New York, NY caught three striped marlin this day; making it the most marlin caught by any one boat this week. The marlin were caught out in front of La Herradura on live bait and varied in size from 100 to 120 lbs. approximately and were all released. Ryan and friends also caught one sailfish and one yellowfin tuna around 25 lbs. The port was closed Thursday and Friday due to big waves and stormy conditions caused by the hurricane passing by.

OTHER SPECIES: This week started off strong with all boats catching dorado on Saturday, bringing in a total of 116 dorado on only 14 boats, with all catch limits respected. A total of 208 dorado were caught this week all ranging around 10-25 lbs. and a few that were around 35-40 lbs. and were all found in different spots. Although we saw less of it than of the dorado, the tuna caught this week came in at around the same size, 10-25 lbs., with a few big catches towards the end of our week on Wednesday.

The top boat for dorado, by only a slim margin this week is the Valerie, with Austrian angler Ispas Mihai and friends catching 20 dorados ranging from 10-30 lbs. All dorados were caught on caballito bait in front of Pescadero. The Andrea and local anglers Roberto Violante from La Paz, Francisco Coth, Cristian Mendia and Ricardo Amador from Cabo, also found luck out at Pescadero, catching 16 dorados on caballito bait as well. This same day the Ruthless caught 17 dorados all out at Gaspareno on bait and lures (green and striped).

The Rebecca’s anglers Tim Johnston and Katy Williams from Worden, Montana toped the weight chart for the week with their 112 lb. tuna. In addition to this big guy, they also caught three more around 25 lbs. Tuna were caught 25 miles out from the 200 spot.
Albert and Kathleen Thomasson also caught a big tuna on Wednesday, weighing it in at 82 lbs. They also managed to catch two sailfish around 100 lbs. which they released. All three fish were caught out at the 11:50 spot on petrolero lures and caballito bait, respectively.

Other fish caught this week were mostly skipjacks and roosterfish, and only one wahoo around 40 lbs. caught aboard the Andrea by Jason Manning from San Francisco, CA.


LOCATION: Pacific – Cabrillo, Golden, Gaspareno, Pescadero, 200 and 11:50 spot.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Leading up to the hurricane Norbert’s arrival weather was pretty clear with some clouds and calm waters. Port was closed due to the hurricane on Thursday thru Friday with waves as big as 20 feet at times. Now the weather has cleared up with sun shinning bright once again and waters calming.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 85 F
BEST LURES: Caballito, petrolero, green, purple and white/blue lures

Fishing Report August 23rd to 29th, 2014

Numbers at a glance: Billfish 97%, Dorado 93%, Tuna 14%, Other 16%
 BILLFISH: We had a fabulous week here in Cabo and that was even with the port being closed for two days due to big seas caused by Hurricane Marie that was out in the Pacific. The darker moon in conjunction with more stable water temperatures  was exactly what we needed to get the bite to pick up and boy did it pick up.  All but a few of our boats caught a billfish this week, usually with the bonus of eating fish too. We had just one boat draw a blank and that was because the anglers got sea-sick and asked to come back in. Striped marlin picked up the pace and regained their place as the most abundant billfish in Cabo, followed by good amount of sailfish and a couple of small blues. Cody Brunette, Jacob Lewis from & friends from Midland, Texas had an outstanding day aboard C Rod on August 24th when they caught and released both a blue and striped marlin a 45 lb. wahoo and eight dorados close to Migrino. This same boat did very well a couple of days later when they caught and released a sailfish, two striped marlin, seven dorado and six tuna near Las Margaritas for John Platon and friends from Gig Harbor, Alabama. La Brisa slammed it this day as well, with two sailfish, two striped marlin, three dorado and a tuna for the Alfords & Pollards from Tyler, Texas. Foster Sayles from Galveston fished aboard 28 ft. Adriana and had great success releasing three striped marlin, one sailfish and a dorado at Los Arcos and Margaritas. Flora T newcomer to the fleet, again proved their worth, making the fish report again with a blue and striped marlin released and two dorado boated for Matthew Small, another Texan.  Last but not least La Brisa had a notable catch for Ashley Griffin & party from Houston,  with three striped marlin released and seven dorado. Pisces anglers caught a total of 83 billfish this week consisting of 36 striped marlin, 18 sailfish and 2 blue marlin.
 

OTHER SPECIES:  After the rains is a good time to fish dorado, as they congregate underneath floating debris making them easier to find, but then again, the catches were getting consistent even before the rains. This week they were the most widely caught fish in Cabo, giving us a total catch of 222 fish equivalent to ninety three percent catch success rate. Catches ranged from one to fifteen fish up to 20 lbs. There was a tie for top dorado boat this week between Adriana and Valerie, who both caught fifteen each in one day – of course limits were respected.  Tuna catches slowed way own with just fourteen percent of our boats catching school size fish. There was one massive tuna caught out of San Jose the day before the port was closed that weighed in at 335 lbs, aboard Gordo Banks pangas – this fish easily makes the top ten of the largest tuna every caught here. The only other fish we caught were a few wahoo up to 45 lbs. and skipjacks.
LOCATION: Pacific - Los Arcos, Gaspareno, Migrino, Pozo de Cota, Golden Gate.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Heavy rain on the 25th followed by rough seas on the 26th & 27th, when the port was closed.  Now hot and humid with partly cloudy skies.

BEST LURES: Caballito, ballyhoo, green, purple, petrolero, blue and white

Fish Report August 16th to 22nd, 2014

Brian Meadors Aboard Rebecca Three Striped Marlin Released

BILLFISH:  The bite in Cabo has definitely picked up since our last report, with a 20% increase in billfish captures up from 44% to a 62% this week.  Our turnaround may be due to water temperatures becoming more stable and to the moon being in its darker stages. Temperatures on land have been around the 90’s, accompanied by high humidity, sunny to partly cloudy skies, and even a few showers in San Jose del Cabo and the Pacific side. 
The Shambala stands out this week, with an impressive capture of two marlin species for anglers Katie Gorman and Kris Couillard, both from Massachusetts, and Deb & Kim Barrow from Washington state not only did they land a 240 lbs. blue marlin, on a green lure, they also caught and released two striped marlin estimated to be around 120-140lbs, on live bait and as if that was not enough, they went on to catch a wahoo, dorado and seven tuna – pretty impressive for this all girl team.  All their action took place at the Pozo de Cota area of the Pacific side close to shore.
The Rebecca also did well out on the Pacific side near Migriño, for Brian and Linda Meadors from Texas. They caught and released three Striped Marlin in the 80-120lbs range on live caballito and also caught tuna and twelve skipjacks – they could have done even better, as they hooked two blue marlin both of which got off, but that left a lasting impression on this couple, for a trip that Brian said “I will remember forever”.
The Ruthless one of our ever popular 31 ft. Bertram’s, caught and released two striped Marlin in the 100-130lbs range, as well as a sailfish estimated in the 80-90lbs range for Kent and Trevor Hughes from Austin, Texas.  A few days later this same boat caught a 252 lb. blue marlin & eight dorado for William Acker from the same town. On August 20th, another one of our Bertram’s, this time the Tiburon had a great day for Brade family from Midland, Texas when they released a blue marlin, just shy of 200 lbs. & two striped marlin, whilst boating a dorado for the table. Valerie had a superb day for Joe & Shelly Martini from Florida on August 21st at the Golden Gate, when they released four sailfish on a combination of lures and live bait and also boated four dorado. Newcomer to the fleet Flora T II had a muscle tiring day for Kelly Johns and friends from Dallas when they released a blue marlin, striped marlin, sailfish and caught twenty five dorado, twelve of which were released. Michael Harrell out on La Brisa was very fortunate to hook a black marlin at Golden Gate, which they tried unsuccessfully to release – it was a young fish at 182 lbs., but they were able to release a striped marlin and boat five dorado.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 46 billfish this week, consisting of 33 striped marlin, 9 sailfish, 3 blue marlin & 1 black marlin.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches soared this week to a whopping 85% making them the most widely caught species in Cabo this period. The good thing is they were fairly close and spread along the Pacific coastline meaning most boats could find them. Catches ranged from on to up to twenty five fish with the average right around five fish per charter. They took pretty much anything, live bait or lures in a variety of colors. Our total dorado catch was 264 fish.  Tuna catches dropped a little more this week with just 19% of boats catching usually just a single fish, the only exception was Tiburon who caught twelve up to 35 lbs., twenty miles off of Balmaceda for Doug & Eve Pena. A half dozen wahoo were caught but none more than 38 lbs., but nevertheless much appreciated by those who got to eat them. The only other species caught was skipjack.
WEATHER:  Mostly sunny, hot and humid, with clouds threatening rain that never came. Seas were moderate with swells on some days.
LOCATION: Pacific side from the Lighthouse to Golden Gate.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 86 F
BEST LURES: Live caballito, green, orange & assorted colors.
