Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 26th to April 8th 2016

BILLFISH: Marlin have been conspicuously absent from Cabo the past couple of months with just a few caught each week and though many more were sighted, getting them on a hook was a real challenge.  Nevertheless towards the end of this report we began to see more of them and more anglers were rewarded with hooks ups and some even had multiple marlin days.  It looks like things are about to change!  Pisces Bill Collector had an outstanding day for Todd Huerkamp and Laney Dobbs from Texas, fishing of Punta Gorda, where they manage to release THREE striped marlin on live bait, in the 100 to 130 LB class.  Yahoo had given up on the day and was heading back in when they were able to hook two striped marlin just three miles off of Lands’ End for Scott and Jim from Chicago.  Andrea was the only other boat to have more than one marlin in a day, with a double header for Dane & Blake Wilson from Montana.  Our boats caught a total of twenty six marlin this week, with many others spotted but not tempted.  However, Pisces anglers caught plenty of fish this report easily adding up to over 1,000 fish, between all the different smaller species.  In a way it’s been good that the marlin have been slow, as captains have been forced to try new techniques and fish for other species, developing skills that may have rusted a bit when the marlin is so plentiful.  Some of the best catches were the mixed bag days that was perfect for families fishing over Easter as everybody on board got to catch something.  A group visiting from New Jersey, fishing aboard Bill Collector and managed to release a striped marlin as well as a 150 LB pilot shark for the group headed up by Don Michael.  Lake Schiefelbein and family had a great time on Ruthless released a striped marlin at Migrino then caught eight groupers, six ladyfish and a yellow tail.  The Staver family from Chicago must have been tired after their outing on Valerie with a 160 LB striped marlin released as well as twenty one triggerfish, two groupers and a roosterfish to boot.

OTHER SPECIES:  Eighty percent of our charters caught small game fish this week, though a few boats did get “skunked”, mainly those that opted for a half day.  Those that took the full day had a bonanza on triggerfish – fun on ultra-light tackle- roosterfish, snappers, lady fish, Barbosas (slimeys), jack crevalle, sheephead, skipjacks, jack crevalle, sierra and various types and sizes of grouper.  One of our pangas released a 150 LB hammerhead shark for Tom Kledzinski from Chicago, who also caught three skipjacks. Twenty eight foot Andrea had a busy day with anglers from Reno, Nevada on board, with a pilot shark released, fifteen ladyfish, three babosas and a grouper.  Pisces Tiburon (which means shark) aptly released a large hammerhead shark for Mark Shmiedl from Ohio as well as good numbers of trigger and lady fish.  The Saline’s and Bienkowskis from California fished together on Andrea and released a 100 LB thresher shark, eleven ladyfish, a grouper, yellowtail, ten triggerfish and two babosas.  Tracy Ann had a nice day catching eight groupers, two of the unusual and beautiful sheephead, plus trigger and ladyfish.  Yellowfin tuna catches were slow with just five percent of boats finding  this species.  Bill Collector was able to catch fourteen up to 25 LBs at San Jaime for Sam Sheriden and friends from Canada.  The Richter party from Fayetteville, North Carolina were out with the crew on Knot Workin’ who are tuna aficionados – they got the anglers into the tuna and managed to land eight up to 40 LBS.  Pisces Adriana caught a really nice 56 LB grouper for the Stephenson’s from Colorado who also caught another grouper, two sheephead, three red snapper, eight ladyfish and a couple of triggerfish. 

WEATHER: Quite windy and overcast some days on Pacific, now clear and flat. Calmer seas on the Cortez.
LOCATION: Pacific for smaller game and tuna, Migrino, Margaritas, San Jaime, marlin starting to show up on Cortez side between Santa Maria and Punta Gorda.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 12th to 18th 2016

BILLFISH:  The Striped Marlin increased four percent compared to last week, the crews are seeing more Marlin in the surface, some of them no interested in biting but more attracted with live bait such as chancleta and mackerel, also we are seeing good sizes from 130 to 180 lbs.  Pisces 28ft “Andrea” released a Striped Marlin, eight Trigger fish, six Lady Fish and a Sheep head fish at Migriño over the Pacific side for Josh Bailey and Karman Waquespach from Mansfield, Texas.  Pisces Panga 25ft “Poseidon” released two Striped Marlin estimated weight of 130 to 170 lbs. in Balmaseda for Eric, Payton and Preston Herleth from Texas State.  Pisces 31ft “Ruthless” got tight lines for Tom and Taylor Yancey from California releasing one Striped Marlin, six Trigger fish and six Skipjacks at Migriño and Cerro de Arena using mackerel as live bait.  “Ruthless” vessel again with Captain Beto released two Striped Marlin (150 lbs.) and six Trigger fish at Los Arcos, Pozo Cota and Migriño spot for Dan Owens, Jayme Owens, Stacey Connelly and Kelsey Schneider from Centennial, Colorado.  Pisces 31ft “Tracy Ann” vessel gave to our good lady friend from Oklahoma Linda Smith an exciting day: Striped Marlin, a Pilot shark, ten Roosters (10-20 lbs.), eight Trigger fish, seven Grouper (10 to 20 lbs.), six Lady fish and three Red Snapper at Pozo Cota. Pisces 32ft “Bill Collector” as well had a busy day reeling a Striped Marlin, two yellow fin tunas, estimated weight 20 to 40 lbs. one Pilot shark and a 25 lb.  Dorado over the 240 spot and San Jaime for the Wade's family coming from Tennessee:  Bobby, Helen, Caroline and Bobby Jr. Pisces 31ft “Tiburon” released another Striped Marlin with Caballito bait at Margaritas for Kenneth, Lisa and Brooke Marchbach.  Pisces 38ft “Speedwell” fought a Sailfish (80 lb.) at el Faro spot, for George Kappos and Michael Deckard from Ohio.  On March 18th Pisces 31ft “La Brisa” spoted a Striped Marlin (180 lb.) and one Dorado (25 lb) at Los Arcos for Robert and Treyson Eckman, from Fort Collins, Colorado.  Finally Pisces 35ft “Knot Workin” got tight lines with a Striped Marlin and two Yellow Tails (30 lb.) at Migriño for Robert Lane's group visiting from Big Bear Lake, Ca.  34% of Pisces Sportfishing anglers released a total of 23 Billfish consisting of 22 Striped Marlin and 1 Sailfish, all Marlin were successfully released.

OTHER SPECIES:  Mahi-Mahi and Yellow Fin Tuna still in   slow numbers, however the ones brought-in are so valuable! Without question “Bill Collector” 32ft vessel has been working really hard to find this great eating fish.  The first day Juan Carlos ran twenty miles over the Old light house and got two 15 lbs for the Vaughn's family from Texas; On March 16th we got another two between 15 to 20 lbs. and a Pilot Shark at San Jaime spot for Joe and Victoria Barnes from Ontario, Canada.  Inshore fishing in the past week was with consistent numbers: Pisces 28ft “Andrea” got six Jack Crevelle from 15 to 20 lbs. and twelve sierras at Cerro del Golden  for Garret, Ashleigh Holder and Hailey Elam from Corpus Christi, Texas. Pisces 60ft “Shambala” got two Red Snapper, four Grouper (10 to 15 lbs.) and Triggerfish at Chileno for the Riley/McEvoy family from Morristown, New Jersey.  Pisces 31ft “Tracy Ann” gave a fun fishing day for the Weiss family from Houston, Texas, they fought five Roosters, eight Groupers (10-15 lbs.) one Sheep head, six Lady Fish and seven Trigger Fish all spotted with live bait at Pozo Cota.  Fifty five percent of our Pisces Anglers have released and brought some smaller species: 264 Triggerfish, 119 Ladyfish, 60 Groupers, 45 Sierras, 33 Roosters, 60 Groupers for mention some.  And the 9% total combined for Dorado and Yellow Fin Tuna.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 05th to March 11th 2016

BILLFISH: We have kept the same numbers that we had last week, the billfish is getting a bit closer over the Pacific side, despite the cold front that came from the North at the beginning of the week, with 28 mph heavy winds and unusual dust storms that kept us away from fishing one day, we managed to have billfish and inshore action!  Pisces 35ft “Listo” ran to Los Arcos, 15 miles over the Pacific side and reeled a 130 lb Striped Marlin for Steve Murchin, Colton Sudberry and Jason Rogers from San Diego, California.  Pisces 25ft “Poseidon” panga got two Marlin and Spanish mackerel with live bait at El Faro for Steve Kovach and John Massotust from California.  Pisces “Yahoo” 42ft Bertram did a great job and found a 180lb Striper at Los Arcos for Cliff Cook, Sam Smiley and Alan Wood visiting from Columbus, Ohio.  Pisces 28ft “Andrea” with Captain Orlando, got tight lines for the Koontz family from Mount Jackson, Virginia releasing a Striped Marlin at Los Arcos.  Pisces 31ft “Rebecca” got two Striped Marlin, estimated weight 130lbs at Margaritas spot for Scott Tudor, Heidi Lee and Nick Pinson from Seattle, Wa.  Both marlins were successfully released!  Pisces 31ft “Tracy Ann” released two good size Stripers estimated weight 150lbs, one Grouper and Lady Fish with mackerel bait for James McGuirk, Ryan Nolan and Tyler Wiebe visiting from Newbury Park, California.  On March 10th Pisces 31ft “Ruthless” traveled to Pozo Cota and spot Striped Marlin and Jack Crevalle for Sam and Keri Montgomery from Colorado Springs, Co.  Finally “Yahoo” 42ft Bertram again, released another Striped Marlin at El Faro for Douglas Ricken and Tanya Brockwell from Raleigh, North Carolina.  Thirty percent of the Pisces anglers caught 15 Striped Marlin, all successfully released with the exception of one Marlin.

OTHER SPECIES: Last week it was trigger fish all over!  This time is the turn for Jack Crevalle or toros (bull in Spanish), being the main catch for inshore, with sizes  from the 10 to 30lbs.  This fish is really fun to catch and excellent to eat. Along with it we have seen Trigger fish, Grouper, Spanish mackerel, Pompano and Rooster mainly all located over Margaritas, Migriño, Pozo Cota and Los Arcos over the Pacific side.  Only one vessel got a 30lb Dorado aboard the 35ft Pisces “Listo” with mackerel live bait at Los Arcos for the group of Chandler Vogel from Virginia.  Pisces 46ft “Attitude Adjusment” released three Jacks and a Rooster (20-30 lbs) at La Antena for the Maloney Family visiting from East Hanover, New Jersey.  Pisces 42ft “Hot Rod” hooked five Jacks ranging from 15 to 20lbs and twenty Roosters from 15 to 35 lbs using rapalas, cuchis and live bait at Pozo Cota.  All released!  Pisces 38ft “Speedwell” had good fun reeling six Roosters and four Jacks for Richard Hutchinson, Ron Peaseleg, Todd Guptill, Zach Guptill, Dylan Hutchinson and Sarah Guimond all visiting from Maine.  Pisces 32ft “Bill Collector” ran 20 miles out from El Faro and got three 20lbs Yellow fin tunas using cedar plus for David Kersten´s group from Portland, Oregon and “C Rod” 38ft managed the same action with five 25lbs yellow fin tunas in Migriño, using live bait for Rob Chimko´s group from Vancouver, California.  Both groups were very lucky!  Pisces 31ft “Tiburon” got a Pilot shark, two Sea bass and six Lady Fish in Migriño for Michael Mains, Eric Messmer and Josh Bailey from Utah.  Fifty percent of our Pisces anglers got a huge variety of inshore fishing and the 19% percent combined of our anglers Mahi-Mahi and Yellow fin tuna.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report 13th to 19th February 2016

BILLFISH:  On February 13th David Mitchell and Bill Hicks visiting from Hobbs, New Mexico went out aboard the Pisces 38ft “C Rod” vessel, these lucky anglers reeled the first Swordfish of the season!, a beautiful 115 lbs spotted outside of  Jaime Banks using live bait.  There was a few Striped Marlin spotted outside of Palmilla area in San Jose del Cabo, a symptom of the fishing transition that soon will move over the Sea of Cortes to warmer waters.  Pisces 42ft “Hot Rod” vessel traveled to Palmilla and got tight lines for Dan Cunniffe, Mike Ceseña and Jim McKenna that released 130 lbs  Striped Marlin with a large sardine locally called “sardineta”.  They were visiting from Pittsford, New York.  Pisces 42ft “Hot Rod” again got tight lines the next day for Texas group Harry & Elizabeth Sturges, Charlotte & Brooke Pezell, which released another 120 lbs Striped Marlin.  Pisces “Rebecca” released a Sailfish, weight estimated 90 lbs, using a purple lure outside of Migriño for the group of Cindy Casso visiting from Kenly, North Carolina.  One more time hot “Hot Rod” vessel got  and successfully released one Striped Marlin, one dorado and a wahoo weight estimated 25 lbs about  40 miles out of the Hill for the Sturges group visiting from Texas.  Eight percent of the Pisces anglers released Billfish which consist in 3 Striped Marlin, 1 Swordfish and a Sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES:  Tuna still being the main catch,  Pisces 32ft “Bill Collector” reeled ten yellow fin tunas  between 30 to 45 lbs with cedar plugs outside of the Golden gate spot for Phil and Michelle Timothy from Utah.  “Valerie” 35ft Pisces vessel got tight lines on twenty three tunas at La Ballena spot, getting everybody in the action: Monica Vining, John Park, John Ernest, Morgan Harris, Elizabeth and Kris Sokolowski visiting from Atlanta, Georgia.  31 ft Pisces “Tiburon” traveled 44 miles out of the Hill and reeled twenty four tunas for David Ryan´s group visiting from Phoenix, Arizona.  Pisces “Rebecca” did good bringing twelve tunas between 10 to 30 lbs outside of La Ballena for George Schneider and Sarah Adamczyk from Alberta, Canada.  Pisces 31ft “Tracy Ann” reeled twenty six tunas 22 lbs outside of Pescadero and San Pedrito area for Joseph Kennedy, David Farrell, Walter Oates and James Hall visiting from Spartenburg, South Carolina, who were fishing with us many days and were so pleased with their catch!  As long as we move on to the season, we will see more inshore action, fun to reel, fight and release!  Panga 27ft “Tres Amigos” got red snapper, trigger fish, jack crevelle and roosters, 5 to 8lbs. for Phillip Rick and Anderson Bernie from South Carolina.  Pisces 31ft “La Brisa” got fifteen triggerfish and three yellow tails in a half day trip in Margaritas spot for Ray Washburn group from California.  “Adriana” 28ft vessel reeled twenty trigger fish, four snooks and two jacks in Margaritas for the Miller family.  Panga 27ft “Tres Amigos” hooked a rooster and needle fish for Sue Ferrell, Jim Hall and Anderson Bernies from South Carolina. All inshore fish were successfully released.  Fifty nine percent of our anglers caught 415 yellow fin tunas, the other 42% a variety of inshore fish: 68 trigger fish, 12 yellow tails,  4 snooks and a bunch of skipjacks, Spanish mackerel and a needle fish, only the nine percent reeled six dorados.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Dec 12 - 18, 2015

BILLFISH: Ho, ho ho!, it feels like Christmas time in Cabo and it looks the billfish have spread out between the steady Pacific side and some parts of Cabo, more specifically between Chileno and Cabo del Sol this week.  “Valerie” Pisces 35ft had a nice day reeling in a Striped Marlin estimated at 180 lbs., one dorado and a small tuna for Peter Karras, Carlos Goncalves and Jomar Labuschagne, visiting Cabo for the first time, coming from Portugal and South Africa!  Pisces “Cabolero” 31ft released a striped Marlin in San Jaime Bank for Jesse & Julie Prather, Mike Summers and Tim Burgarner from Caldwell, Idaho. “Poseidon” Pisces 25ft panga is not a big boat, but nevertheless kept lines busy with a Striped Marlin and four dorado up to 20lbs. for Elbert and Betty Bivins from Jackson, at the Cerros de Arena, on the Pacific side.  Pisces “Tiburon” 31ft also had a great day for a group of Swedish angling friends: Bernt Olson, Nicholas Lund, Sten Gumar and Kjell Kironvall who fought two Striped Marlins and a Sailfish in the same area. “Ruthless” 31ft Bertram headed to La Ballena, over on the Pacific and released a Striped Marlin and two dorados for Kurtis, Shayne and Tyler Millhollin visiting from beautiful Santa Barbara, Ca. “Speedwell” 38ft Pisces reeled two Striped Marlin and three dorados in San Cristobal and Pozo  Cota for Mike, Anna, Tom and Kevin Cole from Sacramento, Ca. good job Captain Piranha!  “Rebecca” Pisces 31ft reeled a Blue Marlin 200 lbs. estimated weight, the crew used a “flying” lure (volador) at the 11.50 spot for more Swedish anglers: Ola Eklund, Johan Ingenmansson and Peter Mucander, good job!  Another Blue and Striped Marlin released aboard “Bill Collector” 32ft Pisces, estimated weight 200 lbs. the crew used the volador lure as well for Frank, Neil an Nancy Muller visiting  from Woodland, California.  On December 17th the “Adriana" and the “Andrea” 28ft ´s Pisces boats did a back to back releasing  two striped marlin outside of the Cerro, for Brian, David, Joselyn & Matt Berry from Grant Bay, Ca. and Brian & Mitchell Sussman from Los Angeles, Ca. respectively.  Finally on December 18th the “Yahoo” 42ft Bertram released two Striped Marlin between 120-130 lbs. outside of the Cerro  for Charlene and John Hattner de Keller, Texas and Jonathan Beyeler from Broadway, Va.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 64 Billfish this week with most successfully released consisting of 58 Striped Marlin, 3 Sailfish and 3 Blue Marlin.

 

 

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado still being quite steady, ranging sizes from 10 to 30 lbs. “Adriana” 28ft Pisces got four dorados  at Migriño for Jeff & Sam Smith from Corpus Christy and Othis Johnson from Houston, Texas.  “Valerie” 35ft Pisces got three dorados with live bait in Pozo Cota for Kathy Sherman from Cheyenne, Wyoming and Linda & Burt Black from Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Captain Ray & Fernando aboard “La Brisa” 31ft Pisces reeled four mahi-mahi estimated 15-30 lbs., at el Cerro del Golden for John Summer group visiting from Camden, Delaware.  “Shambala” 60ft vessel caught five dorados in Margaritas for Alan & Austin Jenkins, Carter Powell & Francis Straw from Sacramento, Ca. and the “Andrea” 28ft Pisces brought six dorados at La Ballena for Jeremy & John Highfill from Fairbanks, Alaska.  Panga “Poseidon” did reel a 35lbs wahoo in front of Cabo del Sol for Jeff Smith group and the “Adriana” 28ft Pisces brought another wahoo 20lbs. at Migriño.  Pangas has been quite successful for Marlin, wahoo and tunas; Panga 23ft “Jessica” Pisces got for the Bivins group six yellow fin tunas, football sizes and really good for lunch. Pisces clients got a total of 81 dorados, 14 tunas and 4 wahoos, representing the 43% for dorado  and the 12% for the Other species.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report October 10 - 16, 2015

BILLFISH:  An exciting week with the lead up to tournament season preceded by 48 hours of steady rain this past Saturday and Sunday.   Fishing remained steady and varied, with plenty of billfish, including pretty good numbers of small blue marlin, striped marlin and sailfish.  Fishing conditions were not much fun in the rain and many anglers opted to turn around and come back in after only a few hours; those that stuck it out though tended to do well, such as Patrick & Jeanne Neville from Bradenton, Florida who released four striped marlin aboard their favorite boat Tracy Ann .  We don’t easily forget this couple as a few years ago they caught a 700 lbs. plus blue marlin the day before the Bisbee tournament.  Another boat that did well was Hot Rod with both a blue and striped marlin released for Joseph Munck from Alabama.  Daniel Ryan did very well aboard the boat he has been fishing for years Rebecca with a blue marlin released, two striped marlin and fifteen tuna – showing his friend aboard a great day of Cabo fishing.  Tiburon our newest 31 ft. Bertram showed Jeff & Tom from Post Falls, Idaho a great time catching a striped marlin, sailfish, pilot shark and tuna.  Texans always seem to be lucky anglers and this week was no exception – Jennifer and Jeremy from Abilene had a busy day aboard 31 ft. Bertram La Brisa releasing four sailfish and a blue marlin on October 12th, 18 miles from the 150 spot.  Beto Lira new captain aboard Ruthless is already showing his fishing prowess and managed to put Tim and Brenda from Minneapolis, fishing with friends Carolina and Eliel from Cabo on a lot of fish, actually three striped marlin and three sailfish outside the Herradura- all released.  This same day Tracy Ann released three sailfish and a striper and Cabolero had a blue marlin, striped marlin and ten tuna for Dale Hanes from Pennsylvania.  Most unusual catch this week was a spearfish, estimated at 40 lbs., released along with a striped marlin aboard Andrea on October 16th.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 111 billfish this week consisting of 57 striped marlin, 42 sailfish, 11 blue marlin and 1 spearfish  - all but one fish released.  The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament got underway on Wednesday with thirty seven teams signed up for this well run event.  Day one saw Reel Energy come to the scale with a 419 lb. black marlin and plenty of smaller billfish released.  Day two the well-known El  Suertudo team made it back with a 312 lb. blue marlin – the third day did not produce any fish over 300 LBS, so these two fish will take the lion’s share of the purse at the awards dinner scheduled for this Saturday night.  A total of 138 billfish were caught in this three day tournament, all released except for the two qualifying fish.  El Suertudo was across the board and should receive a large payout.  Reel Gold will take the release prize with 1300 points.  Largest tuna was by our very own La Brisa for a beautiful 180 lb. tuna that took the anglers five hours to land, team captain Frank Bono was tired but happy.  As we write this the Bisbee Offshore is in its first day of the two day competition with 94 teams competing. The main event, Bisbee Black & Blue begins first day of fishing on Wednesday.

OTHER SPECIES: Tuna fishing was good this week, which bodes well for the upcoming Tuna Jackpot tournament.  Apart from the 180 LB’er mentioned above, Bill Collector also had a nice 135 lb. tuna in the tournament caught in the same area at San Jaime.  Gary Jones from Australia landed a nice 150 lb. tuna aboard C Rod after it took a purple lure 25 miles out from the Lighthouse.  These were the biggest fish for us this week but there were plenty of other smaller ones, giving us a tuna catch success rate of forty two percent and a total catch of 163 fish.  Dorado catches remain slow, with no qualifiers weighed in the tournament but with a smattering caught by our regular charter clients up to 30 lbs. in weight.  Just a few wahoo caught in the 20 to 30 lb. class and inshore a few roosterfish and skipjacks.

WEATHER: Rain for almost 48 hours at the beginning of this period now clear skies, mostly flat seas and a return to hotter weather.

LOCATION: Pacific from Lands’ End to San Jaime, some boats off of the 11.50 two to 30 miles offshore.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report July 4 - 10, 2015

BILLFISH:  This week we saw excellent fishing resulting in ninety five percent of our charters catching fish – the first couple of days of the week though, we saw several boats “skunked” as the fish moved around and would not settle on one location.  The hot weather brought blue marlin, with the largest being a 380 lb’er caught by Australian angler Angelo Abela aboard Attitude Adjustment (that’s a lot of “A’s”).  The fish took a live caballito and was safely released at the 11.50 spot.  Pisces C Rod did very well to release three blue marlin on three consecutive days, July 6th, 7th & 8th;  all were close to 200 lbs. and were caught at the 11.50 spot – they also released a couple of striped marlin on these same dates.  Michael & Alex Jennings from Orange County, California had a fabulous day aboard Pisces Speedwell fishing at the 95 spot they released a 300 lb. blue marlin, a sailfish and landed a yellowfin tuna and skipjack.  Mexican anglers Jaime & Diego Williams were pleased with their billfish catch of an almost 200 lb. blue marlin and a sailfish aboard Valerie on July 6th.  The Andrea had a 200 lb. plus blue marlin that they caught on a Chiwillie lure in front of San Pedrito for Yance Warbel from Colorado, who also boated a tuna.   The Widner family from Austin, Texas, fished aboard Ruthless and did well to release on of the biggest striped marlin we’ve seen in a while at 200 lbs. (estimated).  Tracy Ann made the fish report this week for three striped marlin released for the Vanderburg family from Texas – their fish took live caballito and were caught on the Pacific side between Elias Calles and Golden Gate.  A nice mixed bag day was had by Andrea on July 7th with a striped marlin, pilot shark & twenty two tuna.  There could have been more billfish catches but many anglers decided to try for tuna.  Our anglers caught a total of 65 billfish this week, consisting of 46 striped marlin, 8 blue marlin & 11 sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES:  The tuna schools move around a lot and this week the catches were better on the Pacific and in fact the largest of the week was caught near Golden Gate aboard Valerie - the 190 lb. fish was caught by Zachary & Leigh Veal and was taken on a yellow & black lure.  A group from Texas, headed up by Brad Spalding did very well to catch seventeen yellowfin tuna thirty miles out from Lands’ End aboard Tracy Ann.  The fish ranged in size from 20 to 130 lbs.  The Valerie had one of the best tuna days, catching thirty football size tuna plus five skipjacks at the Golden Gate for Kevin & Cameron Calogne from Houston, Texas.  Other tuna catches were of one to sixteen fish, with thirty percent of our boats catching this species.  Our total tuna count was 298 fish.  Dorado catches were a lot slower with just 18 caught this week, usually just a lone fish and more occasionally two – there was one exceptionally large dorado but that warrants a separate story – check back tomorrow for that one.  We had several wahoo in the 30 lb class.  The largest wahoo this week was caught by Matt Dutile from Astoria New York aboard Rebecca and was 40 lbs. class as well as a few roosterfish.  Two pilot, one mako and one hammerhead shark were all released.  The only other catches for us this report were skipjacks found inshore.  Pangas had slim pickings inshore this past week with catches being skipjacks and the odd marlin.

LOCATION: Both Cortez and Pacific – tuna more on the Pacific along with striped marlin, blue marlin & sailfish on the Cortez side. Dorado spread out.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report May 29 - June 5

BILLFISH:  Even with a full moon this week, billfish catches were very good. The striped marlin are still present in good numbers with the 11.50 spot still holding as the top location.  As the week progressed the weather became very muggy as a depression formed below us that turned into Hurricane Blanca – not all bad, that kind of weather, when it gets really hot, produces blue marlin and we had two this week.  Speedwell had anglers Dave Thelen, Scott Wolf & Emily West on board when they hooked blue marlin on a guacamaya lure that was estimated at 230 lbs.  - they also caught a 20 lb. dorado.  On the last day of this report Valerie  had anglers from Alberta, Canada n board, headed up by Daniel Loeb – their fish also took a lure, but a yellow and green one and was estimated at 250 lbs.  The striped marlin stuck to live bait and Yahoo was fortunate to release five marlin up to 150 lbs. just below the 11.50 spot for Carey & Richard Kernion and friends.  This same day, June 1st, Tracy Ann was not far behind with four marlin in the same class for the Ross family from Lufkin, Texas.  There were plenty of other catches of one to three fish per boat per day and even a sailfish.  Marlin were by far the most abundant species this week accounting for sixty nine percent of the catch.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 73 billfish consisting of 70 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin and 1 sailfish – 98% were released.

OTHER SPECIES:  Over a decade ago catching sharks was quite common, then we went through dry years where hardly any were caught and when they were, they were small in the 20 to 40 lb. class.  Thing have changed and they have made a comeback with multiple shark catches common right now and of different varieties.  For instance on May 30th Yahoo had an outstanding day for the Bryan family from Mississippi, releasing two striped marlin two thresher sharks over 100 lbs. and one pilot shark around 80 lbs.  D.J Novotney also released two thresher sharks around 120 lbs. plus a striped marlin aboard C Rod and Valerie released three pilot sharks between 70 and 80 lbs. as well as landing our only tuna of the week for David McBride and party from Louisiana. Our only wahoo of the week was a 40 lb’er caught aboard  Bill Collector by Mark Chiavetta.  The pangas we sent out caught jack crevalle, grouper, triggerfish, sheephead and bonitas.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report May 23 - 28, 2015

BILLFISH:  A superb week in Cabo with superb catches throughout the week.  The good old days are back!  Striped marlin were thick and a few sailfish and blue marlin were in the mix too.  The Papazyam family from Los Angeles had one of the best catches of the week when they released six striped marlin in one day aboard 28 ft. Adriana at the 11.50 spot, which has been holding impressive numbers of marlin for the past two weeks.  This same day May 24th Valerie released five marlin for another family from Los Angeles – these fish weighed from 100 to 150 lbs.  and were all caught on live bait, also at the 11.50 spot.  On May 26th, Flora T did very well to release six marlin for Robert & Trevor Patel from Atlanta.  A really outstanding day was had by C Rod for Robert & Debbie Adams and friends; they released four striped marlin, a 180 lb. thresher shark, 120 lb. pilot shark both released and a 20 lb. dorado for the table.  Ruthless released five marlin for John & Katie Staples and we had many catches like this as the week went on.  Anglers regularly caught and released between one and five marlin, as well as many sharks.  Attitude Adjustment was our only boat to catch a blue marlin, just under 200 lbs., and this one was caught five miles outside the 11.50.  Pisces Sportfishing anglers caught a total of 154 striped marlin, 1 blue marlin and 2 sailfish; all but two fish were released.

OTHER SPECIES:  A lot of sharks were caught this week and many of a good size in  the 80 to 180 lb. class.  The most abundant was the pilot shark, which we believe is a silky shark – we had twenty two of these this week, as well as three thresher sharks, one bull shark and one mako shark.  Some boats caught as many as three sharks in a day.  It should be noted that all sharks are being released at this time as there is a ban on taking these until July 31st.  Just a smattering of dorado were caught.  Inshore fishing had some slow days, where pangas got skunked but on other days they did well on jack crevalle, grouper and triggerfish.  Roosterfish, wahoo, group and skipjacks were caught in lesser amounts.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report May 2 - 8, 2015

BILLFISH:  After a great couple of weeks of increasing catches and improvement in billfish rates, this last week was a bit disappointing, as we were slammed with huge ground swells causing the port to be closed to small vessels on a couple of days.  Added to this were some strong winds and full moon; a recipe for tough fishing.  This was frustrating for crews and anglers alike, but that said we still had marlin catches throughout the week with some days better than others.  We also heard of an eleven foot sailfish being caught and a small black marlin.  When fish were caught the most likely encounter was with striped marlin.  Catches started out at the 95 spot and 11.50 spot then gradually moved up the Sea of Cortez to Punta Gorda and Destiladeras.  The most any boat got was two marlin in a day, usually on live caballito, though there were some lure fish too.  The size on the stripers has increased slightly at 120 to 160 lbs.  Tracy Ann and La Brisa were two of the better boats this week with five marlin each.  Even though this report is a bit glum, we are not discouraged as the wind has died as we write this, the sun has come out and the moon is getting smaller.  The last day of this report nearly every boat had at least one marlin released.  Pisces anglers released 27 striped marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES:  Most boats concentrated on marlin as that was the best odds of a catch this week, we did however get a couple of dorado.  La Brisa released a 45 lb. mako shark for Lovene Helt & Michael DeMeo from California.  This boat was also the only one to catch a wahoo this week, of average size at 35 lbs.  The port was closed a couple of days for pangas, which fish, so less smaller game was caught.  There were a couple of grouper, bonita, jack crevalle, needlefish, skipjack, triggerfish and sierra caught.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Windy, cloudy, big swells, rough seas – now calming and getting better.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F

Ruthless was the first boat of the week to release 6 marlin in a day.

BILLFISH:  We had a fabulous week for striped marlin, the best so far this year.  The fish started to appear at the 11.50 spot on the Cortez side and were stacked up for several consecutive days.  Not every boat caught marlin, but even then; they at least spotted them and threw bait but were simply unlucky.  On April 25th Karl & Shari Krueger from Meza, Arizona did exceptionally well when they released six striped marlin from 90 to 140 lbs aboard Ruthless.  A couple of days later Rebecca equaled this with six marlin of their own for anglers Lucas & John Goudreault from Derry, New Hampshire, who’s’ fish were a little bigger at 100 to 150 lbs. …they did well to muscle in around 750 lbs. of marlin, which were all released.  Darry & Laura Wodecki from York, South Carolina also managed to release six marlin at the same location, the 11.50 spot, on April 29th aboard the 35 ft. Cabo Listo.  Closing out the week with a high catch was Flora T II with five marlin released by Todd Mikles and friends from Los Angeles.  Other boats caught between one and four marlin each, giving us a total of 100 fish caught of which all but one was released.

 

OTHER SPECIES:  Seeing as the marlin bite was so good nobody was really concentrating on anything else.  The pangas we sent out caught a few bonitas, skipjacks, jack crevalle and roosterfish.  Dorado fishing was slow with just a couple caught and no tuna this week.
WEATHER CONDTIONS: Sunny but fairly wind all week, blowing hard on the Pacific. Seas moderate.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report April 18 - 24, 2015

BILLFISH:  This week we saw a marked improvement in the Cabo fishery, as striped marlin finally put in a steady appearance.  The area in front of Cabeza de Ballena the 95 spot and the 11.50 sport, all on the Cortez side is where the marlin could be found and on most days enticed to bite.  The few boats that did not achieve a catch did see and bait fish, but they were not always hungry.  On April 20th C Rod had an outstanding day catching and releasing five striped marlin and boating a wahoo for Greg Kent.  This same day Listo released four marlin ranging in size from a tiny 60 lb. fish up to a 120 lb’er the largest they caught, for John Nelson and friends from Woodbury, Minnesota.  This same group went out a couple of days later, this time aboard Cabolero  and again released four marlin, this time a little larger in the 120 to 140 lb. class, all caught on caballito (green jacks).  Earlier in the week it was the Ruthless that released four marlin from 100 to 120 lbs. on a combination of bait and lures for Kim & Paul Salceda from California.  The fishing stayed concentrated in this area producing catches of one to three billfish for seventy three percent of our charters giving us a total of 82 striped marlin and our best week for this species so far this year.

OTHER SPECIES:  The marlin fishing was so good this week that boats did not really try for much else, nevertheless there were a few interesting catches such as Bill Collector  on April 23rd,  with two thresher sharks, estimated at 90 and 110 lbs. released.  We also had a couple of pilot sharks, both around 80 lbs. released.  Inshore some sierra, skipjacks and rooster fish were caught, which accounted for twenty percent of our catches.  Just four dorado were caught this week, one a nice size at 45 lbs. aboard Tracy Ann taken by Rick Falk from North Field, Minnesota.  We also had one smallish wahoo.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Windy on the Pacific, fair on the Cortez side, mostly sunny.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 28 - April 3, 2015

Top boat this week was Tracy Ann on March 30th for catching and releasing three striped marlin.

BILLFISH:  We are pleased to report an improvement in fishing this week both generally and for billfish.  Nevertheless it still could not be described as great.  Water temperatures remain higher than normal for this time of year which could be a factor.  More marlin were spotted this week but they tended to be fussy eaters.  We had catches at both ends of the spectrum of our fishing grounds, from Destiladeras on the Cortez side to Margaritas and Migrino on the Pacific side.  Top boat this week was Tracy Ann on March 30th for catching and releasing three striped marlin at Pozo de Cota for Jamie, Benjamin, Gretchen and James from Easly, South Carolina.  All three fish took live caballito and were of a good size at 140-160 lbs.  It was nice to see boats catching more than a single marlin and a little over a third of the charters managed two stripers and often some smaller game too.  Valerie, Tracy Ann, Attitude Adjustment, Adriana, La Brisa, Rebecca were all boats that caught more than one marlin in a day.  The fishing is becoming more consistent but has still not stabilized, for example on April 1st a lot of the boats were skunked despite spotting multiple marlin but the following day every boat out caught one to two marlin, even those on shorter days.  Fifty seven percent of Pisces Sportfishing boats caught marlin this week, giving us a total of 46 fish, all released, except one.

OTHER SPECIES: There was a not a lot of action on smaller game this week with dorado catches continuing to drop and just nine percent of boats finding the odd fish here and there whilst trolling for marlin.  Most of the dorado were taken on live bait on the Pacific and weighed from 20 to 30 lbs.  There were a half dozen mako sharks caught between 40 and 80 lbs.  Flora T had a very nice day on March 30th for Owen Kilmury from Huntsville, Alabama.  They caught and released a striped marlin, a 70 lb. mako shark, skipjack and sierra between Pozo de Cota and Migrino.  Other catches closer to shore were a few sierra, skipjacks, jack crevalle and the odd grouper.  These smaller game catches accounted for twenty nine percent of the fleet production.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy skies, otherwise sunny, seas moderate with light winds.

LOCATION: Migrino, Los Arcos, Pozo de Cota, Margaritas, Destiladeras – catches were better on the Pacific.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 75-76F

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 20 - 27, 2015

BILLFISH:  It was definitely feast or famine this week but we can see the fishing is gradually getting better.  More boats reported spotting multiple marlin but generally had a hard time getting them interested in bait.  On the other hand we had some boats that did exceptionally well.  Catch of the week has to go to Tracy Ann and for anglers Jason Jones, Steve Hawkins & Fred Gabel from Chico, California.  On March 26th this trio was fishing at Cerros de Arena on the Pacific side when they hooked a black marlin – very unusual for this time of year - the fish was estimated at 210 lbs. and released healthy; they then went on to release two striped marlin in the 60 to 100 lbs. class.  All three fish took live caballito – thanks guys for releasing all three fish.  Not far behind Tracy Ann this week was the ever popular Rebecca who had an outstanding day on March 25th for a group from Oceanside, California, when they released four striped marlin between Margaritas and Los Arcos.  The fish were between 80 and 110 lbs. and were hooked on live bait.  Another boat that did very well earlier in the week was La Brisa with Bart Findley and friends on board from Blue Springs, Mo.  They went up quite a way up the Sea of Cortez coastline, to Destiladeras where they managed to release three striped marlin in the 60 to 130 lb. class. These catches show that the marlin are on the small side, so it looks like there are a lot of juveniles around.  There were several boats that had double marlin days though quite a lot of boats were “skunked” too.  These catches give us hope that the billfish catches will stabilize soon and become more consistent as the watchword lately has been “inconsistent”.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 35 billfish this week with 34 released.

OTHER SPECIES:  Most of the smaller game this week consisted of inshore species such as sierra and skipjacks, with a few groupers and nice yellowtail thrown in.  We also saw several small mako sharks, 20-50 lbs. released.  A couple of small wahoo were caught, but nothing over 30 lbs.  Dorado catches slowed way down with just six caught total for our fleet and tuna catches similar.  The anglers aboard Valerie on March 22nd, weren’t concerned about the size of their catch but were glad to have action for everybody on board as they caught twelve skipjacks, releasing four.  Bill Collector had a nice mixed day for Trey Parker and friends from Plano, Texas, with a mako shark, skipjack and striped marlin released at Destiladeras on March 27th.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Warmer than usual, clear skies, windy on the Pacific, some swell late in the week.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Feb 14 - 20, 2015

BILLFISH:   This week was a bit frustrating as the start of the week was pretty slow, with the fish moving around a lot and being hard to pinpoint, so what was a productive area one day, drew a blank the next.  Marlins were few and far between so even our top billfish producers struggled to get hook ups.  On one day Tracy Ann decided to go the opposite direction of everybody else and met with success for Dave Mabuy & Dave Farrell, from Spartanburg, South Carolina, when they released two striped marlin in front of Palmilla & Cabeza de Ballena on the Cortez side on February 14th, which was a nice achievement on a day when most boats got “skunked”.  Debora & Ricky Keller from New York headed out on 28 ft. Andrea on February 15th and travelled a long way, thirty two miles out from Land’s End to be exact, but they did end up releasing two striped marlin.  One of our better days was February 16th, when nearly all the boat managed a marlin each plus some dorado.  Top boat was 31 ft. Bertram Rebecca who released three marlin between 100 lbs.  and 140 lbs. at the 11.50 spot for Robert & Tammy Felinski from Texas.  This same day Tiburon our newest 31 ft. Bertram had two marlin released in the same area.  At the end of the week we saw catches again pick up when boats again released an average of one marlin and a lot of dorado.  Captain Rey and La Brisa did better than average at the close of the week with two striped marlin released, a dorado & three skipjack for Eric Baker and party from Delphi, Indiana.  The water is still warmer than normal for this time of year and the striped marlin have still not arrived in huge numbers, however Flora T spotted swordfish that they baited without success and Ruthless had a 350 lb. blue marlin on.  Twenty seven percent of our boats caught billfish, which is up from the previous week, giving us a total of 25 fish. 

OTHER SPECIES:  Dorado was the most widely caught fish this week but even though catches were excellent, even this abundant fish was missing in action a couple of days.  Best day for dorado was February 19th when boats had fast and furious action, with Ruthless and Valerie getting twenty plus fish in the Elias Calles and Gaspareno areas as well as several skipjacks.  Weights were nice at 15 to 30 lbs. and on this our best day, the dorado were hungry for live caballitos.  Adriana did well for Cindy & John Jacober from Ohio with nine dorado and a striped marlin released in the same area.  The average catch per boat was closer to two fish per boat.  Forty seven percent of our charters caught dorado giving us a total of 186 fish, with many released.  Bill Collector was the only boat to catch a shark this week, not a huge one but they did release the 60 lb. mako at Punta Gorda for Troy and Ada from Michigan.  Inshore there was a lot of skipjack, some sierra and triggerfish, as well as a few amberjack, needlefish and roosters.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report, Nov 29 - Dec 6, 2014

Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined: 93%

Numbers at a glance: Billfish 46%, Dorado 56%, Tuna 19%, Other 80%

BILLFISH:  Billfish were surprisingly slow this week in comparison to other species caught, but it may have been because people were not going out of their way to find them.  Most of the fish this week were close to shore, so many boats preferred to head up the Pacific coast only a few miles out and catch some nice wahoo and dorado instead of looking for marlin.  However,  La Brisa was one of the boats to show us that if you were looking for the billfish you would find them.  They caught eight striped marlin, all released, ranging from 80 to 140 lbs, out of Golden Gate.  They also managed to catch three nice sized dorados close to Migriño averaging 25 lbs. 

On the same day, the Andrea and anglers Blake and Trevor from Texas, managed to catch and release one sailfish and one striped marlin out of Las Margaritas, and also find luck at Migriño with three dorados and one wahoo. 

Finally, the Ruthless managed to pull off and impressive half day of fishing, catching two striped marlin, around 120 and 140 lbs., which they released, as well as three dorado; making it back to the dock by 11:30 am. 

OTHER SPECIES:  This week was most certainly the week for wahoo.  We saw a few very nice sized wahoo making it to the scales, such as the 40 lb wahoo caught on the C-Rod by angler Baxton from CA.  In addition to this wahoo Baxton and friends caught four more wahoos ranging from 15 to 20 lbs, four dorados, one yellowfin tuna and one striped marlin which was released.  All small game fish were caught out at Gaspareño, while the marlin was caught at Pozo Cota.

The Tiburon crew and anglers Terry and Mathew had an excellent time fishing on this same day, catching eight wahoo!  They landed one of the biggest seen this week, weighing it in at 48 lbs, with the rest ranging from 15-20 lbs.  They also caught and released one striped marlin out at Golden Gate, while the wahoos were found at La Ballena.  Wahoos hit on rappala lures, green and black/red.

As for the dorados, the Ruthless and anglers from Indiana showed us that the mahi are still around, and in good size too.  They caught twelve of them all around 20 lbs out by Golden Gate on green lures.  They released five dorado as well as one striped marlin and, to top it off, caught three wahoo as well.  The wahoo bit on tigrillo lures and weighed about 20 lbs.

The tuna on the other hand did slow down a bit, but also because most anglers were interested in the fish closer to shore.  The tunas have been out a little further, but even with this, the Andrea and anglers from California managed to catch eight on feathers and cedar plugs out of Elias Calles. 

The Valerie really committed to find their anglers the tuna they wanted, going 30 miles out from the Lighthouse, and it paid off, they landed thirteen tunas all averaging from 15 to 25 lbs. They also caught and released a nice sized striped marlin of about 160 lbs.  The marlin was caught on caballito bait, while the tunas were caught on feathers.

Other small game seen this week were a few small sardine sharks that were released on the Knot Working, caught along with three yellowfins 22 miles out of the 200 spot. 

The Cabolero was a fine example of the many other small game fish caught this week, with one roosterfish, released, five sierras, one needlefish and one amberjack all caught in the same day out of the Lighthouse and Los Arcos.
