Six Marlin in One Day! Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report for May 14-20, 2016

MARLIN:  We are so pleased that fishing has stayed on track and continues to improve after a season of scarcity during the last few months.  Even with a big moon the fish were not deterred and gave a good showing all week.  To give you an idea of how great it’s been let’s look at the aptly named Brett and Melissa Fisher from Texas; they managed to hook, fight and release SIX striped marlin, ranging in size from 100 to 160 LBS aboard Tracy Ann at the 11.50 spot.  Hot Rod had a hot day on May 16th, when they released five striped marlin up to 160 LBS as well as landing a tasty wahoo for the table with a group from Washington D.C. aboard headed up by Richard Battaglia.  A couple of days later they again were able to catch five marlin  with Wes and Susan Sellew on board.  Another boat that did well was Bill Collector with four marlin released, also at the 11.50 spot for the McLaurin and Smith families from Livingston, Texas.  Not to be left out were the Rebecca and Ruthless each with four marlin apiece released on May 20th.  Other boats released between one and three marlin with those not catching generally people that got seasick and who wanted to come back early.  Live bait was absolutely the way to go and the best location was the 11.50 spot on the Cortez side.  Marlin was the top catch this week, with seventy percent of our boats catching, giving us a total of 109 fish of which 107 were released – several fish tagged.

OTHER SPECIES:  We continue to see a variety of sharks being caught in the same area as the marlin all of them are being released.  Andrea a 28 ft Uniflite released two thresher sharks up to 100  LBS, a 70 LB pilot shark and also released a striped marlin for Glen McLaughlin and Sara Madsen.  The varieties of shark caught this week were pilot, hammerhead, thresher, mako and lemon and twenty percent of our charters hooked them.  Dorado catches were a little better this week at thirteen percent and this should increase as we approach summer.  Bill Collector caught five small dorado, two small tuna and released a pilot shark and a striped marlin for Art Muff and Nicole Scarduzio.  Tuna catches were slow with just a few fish caught around the 10 LB mark.  Inshore the fishing has slowed down somewhat with the pangas being hit or miss, nevertheless twenty percent of the boats caught a trigger fish, skipjacks, grouper, sierra, jack crevalle and small roosters.  Mid week there was a flurry of wahoo activity for boats fishing a bit closer to Cabo with some fish up to 60 LBS.  George from Cleveland out on the panga Tres Amigos caught a 40 LB wahoo, two tuna and thee jack crevalles.

LOCATION: 11.50 for marlin and shark, Cabeza de Ballena and Lighthouse for smaller game.  Difficult to fish the Pacific as the wind blew hard all week.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, windy on Pacific, seas calm to moderate.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report July 11 - 17, 2015

BILLFISH:  This week we have a much shorter report than normal as the port was closed for three days due to the proximity of hurricane Dolores.  The storm caused no ill effects in Cabo except for big surf and a smattering or rain but as a precaution the boats were told to stay in, leaving many anglers frustrated as they didn’t get to fish.  The fishing was exactly as it should be at this time of year, with a bit of a drop on striped marlin and an increase on blue marlin and sailfish.  We had several blue marlin this week; David Gonzalez from Houston, got a nice fish on Speedwell as did the Bowen family from Emmett Idaho, who caught a blue marlin estimated at 160 lbs. at the 95 spot aboard Rebecca.  July 13th saw 28 ft. Andrea catch a 300 lb. blue marlin at the Herradura on an orange and black lure for Claude & Kathy Callahan from Virginia.  This same day Tracy Ann had a smaller blue in the same area for Houston anglers, the Villarreal family.  Surprise of the week was for Cody Jeffcott from North Carolina, who had rented a panga by himself; he was shocked to catch a 360 lb. blue marlin just five miles off of Lands’ End as well as four tuna and two dorado. Buddies Jaxon Bates and Brad Jacobs from Boise, Idaho & Snohomish, WA, respectively were thrilled with the fishing and service they received aboard Tracy Ann where they were able to release a striped marlin each in the 120 lb. class on July 14th.  The majority of the fishing was on the Pacific side this week with a good success rate, though there were some boats “skunked” mostly those who opted for half days.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 27 billfish this week consisting of 17 striped marlin, 5 sailfish & 5 blue marlin.

OTHER SPECIES:  It was nice to see the dorado starting to appear this week – right on time for the Dorado Shoot Out at Los Barriles and another dorado tournament out of Cabo San Lucas.  The fish however tended to be on the small side, though some medium size fish were caught, such as a 25 lb. fish on Rebecca who had a total of ten ranging in weight from 10 lbs. upwards to the largest mentioned here.  Some of the dorado were as small as 3 or 4 lbs. and were released. Our total dorado catch was of 68 fish with some boats catching as many as fourteen in a day.  Tuna catches were of small school size fish with catches of between one and thirteen fish for thirty seven percent of our charters.  No real size to any of the tuna this week in the Cabo area, though we did hear of a 300 lb. plus tuna out of San Jose.  With the big surf inshore fishing was not great but we did catch triggerfish, skipjacks and needle fish.  A few wahoo were caught whilst trolling but none over 40 lbs.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Port closed three days, big waves, partly cloudy skies, seas now flat.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report May 16 - 22, 2015

BILLFISH:  This week produced great catches that remained consistent throughout the week and some red hot fishing that we haven’t seen in months.  The striped marlin bite was great at the 11.50 spot as far as Punta Gorda & multiple marlin catches per boat occurred on several days.  One of the best days was May 21st, when 28 ft Adriana caught six striped marlin up to 150 lbs for Alex, Brenda, Jeff & Joe from Kalispell, Missouri.  Listo the 35 ft Cabo, also had six marlin all on live caballito for a group from Colorado.  Joseph Capezio from & friends from California had an amazing time aboard Tracy Ann as they released four striped marlin & five pilot sharks.  Calvin Baker from North Carolina also figured in our top anglers for releasing five marlin up to 120 lbs on the La Brisa with Captain Rey Winkler.  The Valerie had a quadruple marlin day for the Bateman’s from Texas on May 20th.  Striped marlin were not the only catch this week we also had a couple of sailfish both aboard Rebecca – the first catch was for the Rasmussen family from New Mexico – they had a busy day, releasing the sailfish, plus three striped marlin & two pilot sharks – what a day!  The next sailfish was caught by Jake Steinsberg who also released three striped marlin at the 95 spot.  Catches for other boats were of one or two fish.  We also heard of a 700 lbs blue marlin caught out of San Jose, however, the disturbing part is that we were told it was never weighed but was sold on the black market – remember marlin is a species reserved for sportfishing & cannot be sold commercially.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 96 striped marlin this week & two sailfish, all released except one.

OTHER SPECIES:  A lot of sharks were caught this week mostly pilot sharks (presumed to be silky sharks) with as many as five caught on a single boat.  A couple of thresher sharks were fought, one aboard Listo estimated at 160 lbs by Russell Daniel, who also released three striped marlin at the 11.50 spot.  The other was caught aboard Shambala & was around 120 lbs.  We saw a slight increase on dorado this week with a half dozen caught up to 30 lbs.  Wahoo catches also picked up with a nice 50 lb’er aboard Bill Collector at Destiladeras.  Knot Workin did not catch as big a wahoo but did catch eight up to 35 lbs off of Cabeza de Ballena for Richard Campbell & friends.  Smaller game accounted for forty two percent of the catches this week.  Skipjacks, grouper, bonita, triggerfish, mojarras, roosterfish, snapper & sierra were all caught.  One of the more unusual catches was a “vieja” or sheep’s head aboard the panga Salsa.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report May 2 - 8, 2015

BILLFISH:  After a great couple of weeks of increasing catches and improvement in billfish rates, this last week was a bit disappointing, as we were slammed with huge ground swells causing the port to be closed to small vessels on a couple of days.  Added to this were some strong winds and full moon; a recipe for tough fishing.  This was frustrating for crews and anglers alike, but that said we still had marlin catches throughout the week with some days better than others.  We also heard of an eleven foot sailfish being caught and a small black marlin.  When fish were caught the most likely encounter was with striped marlin.  Catches started out at the 95 spot and 11.50 spot then gradually moved up the Sea of Cortez to Punta Gorda and Destiladeras.  The most any boat got was two marlin in a day, usually on live caballito, though there were some lure fish too.  The size on the stripers has increased slightly at 120 to 160 lbs.  Tracy Ann and La Brisa were two of the better boats this week with five marlin each.  Even though this report is a bit glum, we are not discouraged as the wind has died as we write this, the sun has come out and the moon is getting smaller.  The last day of this report nearly every boat had at least one marlin released.  Pisces anglers released 27 striped marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES:  Most boats concentrated on marlin as that was the best odds of a catch this week, we did however get a couple of dorado.  La Brisa released a 45 lb. mako shark for Lovene Helt & Michael DeMeo from California.  This boat was also the only one to catch a wahoo this week, of average size at 35 lbs.  The port was closed a couple of days for pangas, which fish, so less smaller game was caught.  There were a couple of grouper, bonita, jack crevalle, needlefish, skipjack, triggerfish and sierra caught.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Windy, cloudy, big swells, rough seas – now calming and getting better.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report April 4 - 17, 2015

BILLFISH:  This report covers two weeks as we were unable to get one out last week, as we were having too much fun enjoying the Sea of Cortez.  Inconsistency has been the watch word for the last two months and the first part of this reports seemed to follow the same vein but as we entered the latter half of this report, things turned around and we started to see multiple marlin catches on a regular basis.  It may be to do with the weather, as we started to have some colder nights.  Marlin were seen with more frequency, though they were not always hungry.   Tracy Ann our 31 ft. Bertram was easily our top boat this report.  This was the crew that kicked the door open on April 8th, when they released five striped marlin for Bob Schneider from Youngstown, Ohio fishing at the 95 spot.    They followed up a few days later with five marlin and four skipjacks at the Cerros de Arena for Brad & Robert Dickinson from Washington and then went on to release four marlin up to 160 lbs. plus a dorado for Daniel Alonzi & friends from Lone Tree, Colorado.  As if this was not enough they finished the week with another five marlin at the 11.50 spot for Mark, Cary & Saul Farber from Miami.  This boat caught and released twenty nine striped marlin in this report.  La Brisa headed to the 11.50 spot on April 17th with Kevin & Tom from Wauwatosa, WI, aboard and managed to release four marlin up to 130 lbs., which all took live caballito.  We saw a definite improvement the second half of this report when boats regularly caught between one and three marlin giving us a total catch of 118 stripers of which all but one were released.

OTHER SPECIES:  The most notable catch was a mako shark we heard of that came in around 9.00 pm on April 18th – this was not aboard a Pisces boat, but we were able to obtain photos, though not full details as yet.  We know it was caught aboard a boat called Griscelda and seeing as the scale was closed the weight was estimated at 250-350 lbs. – more details to follow shortly.  Nevertheless this is the largest Mako we have seen in years, with the average weight usually around 40 to 80 lbs.  Dorado catches had a bit of a comeback with twelve percent of boats catching one or two fish over a widespread area in the 15 to 30 lb. class.  Smaller game catches, mostly inshore, were pretty good accounting for forty nine percent of our catches.  There were lots of skipjack, sierra on some days, roosterfish, needlefish, amberjack, jack crevalle, triggerfish and a couple of smallish wahoo.

LOCATION: Old lighthouse, Los Arcos, Margaritas, Cerros de Arena, 95 spot, 11.50 spot & Palmilla. 

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, light winds all week, causing some whitecaps on the Pacific.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 7 - 13, 2015

BILLFISH:  We had some good catches this week but were plagued with inconsistency.  Some days every boat had a marlin then the next they caught nothing as the fish moved around and refused to be tempted by the bait offered.  Our top boat this week was 28 ft Adriana on March 8th for anglers Robert & Paul Henry from San Diego.  They released three striped marlin and caught three dorado – perhaps it was something to do with Captain J.R from the Rebecca going out as the mate that day.  A couple of days later this same boat, with the regular crew managed to release two marlin and catch a dorado at Cerros de Arena for Scott Pruitt and family from Dallas, Texas.  Nathan Hawes fished a little further with Devon McCleery, from North Carolina aboard the Rebecca this same day and were fortunate to release a striped marlin each in the 100 to 140 lb class on live caballito.  The only other boat that had more than one marlin was Bill Collector  with two on March 9th both on live bait at Cabeza deBallena for Gerry Rosales fishing with Mario and Carter from Atlanta, Georgia.  There was no set game plan to be able to catch marlin this week, as they were spread out and not always hungry.  Thirty five percent of our boats caught marlin this week with 28 fish released.

OTHER SPECIES:  We are so thankful for the dorado which have been the mainstay of the Cabo fishery over the past couple of months.  This species was again the most widely caught sportfish with fifty percent of boats out  catching one to seven fish in the 10 to 20 lb class.  La Brisa was had the best catch, which was seven fish in one day  at Las Margaritas for the Hughes family from Richmond, Virginia – all of their fish were caught on lures.  Our total tally on dorado was eighty three fish.  A lot of skipjack both the black and white variety were caught inshore as well as some yellowtail, sierra and snappers. The only wahoo of the week was 25 lbs and caught aboard Yahoo. 

LOCATION:  Mostly Pacific off of Lighthouse, Migrino, Gaspareno, some days on the Cortez side, at Cabeza de Ballena and even as far as Destiladeras.

WEATHER CONDITIONS:  Mostly clear skies, windy most days, average seas.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Feb 21 - 27, 2015

BILLFISH:  We had an up and down week in Cabo, all the right elements are present, lots of bait, good color water, temperature a little high at 73 F, but the fish were hard to locate.  Added to this was the fact that there were fewer anglers in town this week, perhaps half of the previous week, so less boat out fishing means less fish being caught.  It was rare that anybody caught more than one marlin but 28 ft. Adriana managed to catch and release two up to 120 lbs. plus a tiny dorado for the Baker family from Coleville, Washington at Elias Calles on the Pacific side on February 21st.  One of their fish took a live caballito & the other a petrolero lure.  This ended up being the best day of the week for marlin with pretty much every boat catching a single marlin plus a few dorado.  On February 22nd, Adriana was one of the only boats to catch marlin, this time at Migrino for Mallorie Edenfeld who also caught a 20 lb. Dorado. Rebecca fished a little further up the coast this day, close to Golden Gate and also released a 130 lb. marlin and landed a 25 lb. dorado  for Rod Savage & friends from Michigan.  Many times the crews spotted marlin and threw bait to them, which they mouthed and then declined.  Twenty percent of our charters caught marlin this week giving us a total catch of 9 fish; all released.  Our overall catch rate however, did improve slightly.

OTHER SPECIES:  Dorado catches provided the bulk of what was landed this week, even though their numbers declined a little.  Catches ranged from one to five fish in the 5 to 30 lb. range.  Dorado were spread out along the Pacific coast from the Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate and took both live bait and different lure colors.  Tuna catches were slow with just a couple of boats finding them.  Tracy Ann travelled 48 miles to find them and even then only got five football size for Derrick & Marilyn from Red Deer, Canada.  Greg Cox was the only angler to catch a shark, a small mako that was released aboard Yahoo.  A small wahoo was caught aboard Andrea as well as a dorado on February 23rd.  Valerie had a good day on small game with eight sierra and three grouper off of Margaritas for George Harrison from Pennsylvania.  Inshore there were a few skipjacks, the odd yellowtail and grouper.

WEATHER: Mostly clear skies with some wind on the Pacific, seas mostly calm.

LOCATION: Pacific from Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate, one day at Cabeza de Ballena on Cortez side.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Jan 24-30, 2015

BILLFISH:  Pretty slow numbers for billfish this week, but that is not to say that fishing is slow.  There was a lot of activity but mostly on dorado.  We had a glimmer of hope, that things were getting better at the end of this period, when Pisces La Brisa caught and released three marlin between 100 and 120  lbs at the Cerros de Arena on live caballito and landed a dorado, for French anglers Yves Jovitteau & Jean Claude Gerard.  Pisces Valerie also had an outstanding catch this same day in front of the Old Lighthouse, when Rob Garza & Joshua Milton from Crow Point, Indiana, released a 120 lb striped marlin then went on to catch six dorado up to 25 lbs and a small wahoo.   Tracy Ann always seems to be in the news and this week was no exception; on January 25th a group of Canadian anglers were on board fishing at the Cerro del Golden when they were fortunate to hook and successfully release two striped marlin up to 130 lbs and boat four dorado.  Pisces top of the line 55ft Flora T II, had an excellent day for Javier & Mario Gonzalez from Austin, Texas, who had fun fighting a 130 lb striped marlin that again took a live caballito and then went on to land three wahoo and a couple of dorado.   So what’s going on with the marlin?  It’s hard to say but the season seems to be messed up – warmer than normal, less bait and then when we spot them they don’t seem to be hungry.  The water is a great color there is plenty of marine life; tons of bait in the bay which the sea lions are feasting on – we even saw a school of porpoise less than 500 yards off of the Hotel Hacienda – guess we have to patient.   Pisces anglers caught a total of eleven striped marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES:  Dorado dominated this week, being found over a wide location but mostly on the Pacific between the Old Ligthouse and Golden Gate.  Top catch was aboard Pisces Rebecca for Suzanne & Chris Rafetto from Los Angeles, Ca. they were fortunate to catch fifteen fish up to 25 lbs, releasing a good many of them at the Cerro del Golden on a combination of bait and lures.  Other catches ranged from one to ten fish with sizes from 12 to 30 lbs.   A whopping eighty three percent of our boats caught dorado giving us a total fish count of 242 fish, with kill limits respected.  Wahoo catches remain the best they have been in years; even though the fish are small they still make a delicious meal.  Peter Mann & Dean Sjoyren has one of the better wahoo days, catching seven on rapalas off of Gaspareno as well as two dorado aboard Tracy Ann.  John Vinzant & friends were not far behind with five caught aboard Ruthless also on rapalas with a couple of dorado added to their catch around the 20 lb mark.  Another group from Canada headed up by Terrance Henry from Alberta, caught one of the biggest fish of the week, a 150 lb pilot shark which was released – they also got a dorado for the table.  Inshore some of the boats caught sierra, a few needle fish and skipjacks.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Unusually cloudy with light rain showers, now clear.  Seas calm with wind coming out of the Cortez on some days.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Nov 22-28, 2014

BILLFISH: What a time to be in Cabo, truly there is no better time of year, the weather is fantastic and the fishing incredible – whales are starting to show up too.  Temperatures are a little warmer than usual which could account for the late season blue & black marlin and sailfish that were caught this last week.  Bill Collector has to be boat of the week for a couple of red hot days, starting with November 22nd, when anglers Michael Romero & Trent Warness from Oregon were on board.  They did what many anglers long to do in a lifetime, let alone in one day.  They caught and released a 350 lb. black marlin, released a 250 lb. blue marlin and four striped marlin, as well as catching two dorado!  All this just one mile from Los Arcos – an outstanding achievement; three types of billfish in one day, including an elusive black.  A couple of days later Captain Julio from Bill Collector had Dan Whiteside and friends from Corpus Christi, Texas on board as they headed up the Pacific to Golden Gate.  They had a great time releasing a 250 lb. blue marlin, as well as two striped marlin around the 100 lb. mark, nine tuna and a dorado.  Our friends from Sweden made their annual trip to Cabo and fished a total of eight days, we still haven’t been able to tally their catches but they did extremely well.  One highlight was for Kjell Ljunggren, Stefan Trumstedt & Jen Bergstrom, aboard Rebecca with five striped marlin and two sailfish released, plus three dorado on November 22nd.  Group leader for the Swedes is Anders Lundgren, who fished with Mikko Pederson and Lars Papp aboard Tracy Ann had a fun but exhausting day on the 23rd, releasing six striped marlin and catching fifteen tuna and two dorado.  Live bait was the most effective way to get hooked up to a billfish this week, with the Pacific producing most catches.  Seventy seven percent of Pisces anglers caught billfish this week, giving us a total catch off 110 fish, consisting of 100 striped marlin, 4 blue marlin, 1 black marlin and 5 sailfish. 

OTHER SPECIES:  Dorado and tuna remain in the area, but should start to decline as we head into December, nevertheless, with the warmer seas, they may just choose to stick around.  Forty eight percent of our boats caught between one and six dorado, most on the small side and hence released.  Tuna catches were slightly lower than those of dorado with forty five percent of our charters catching one to twenty plus tuna, though none were of notable size this week, but rather in the 15 to 30 lb. class.  There were a few small wahoo caught and inshore some sierra, roosters, triggerfish, grouper and skipjacks.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report, Nov 9 - 14, 2014

BILLFISH: 

What an outstanding week for Pisces Sportfishing, every single boat that went out caught fish and several of them, for that matter.  Although billfish weren’t the majority fish caught this week, the fleet still managed to catch 72 marlin and six sailfish , with all but one marlin being released.  Chic from Scotland aboard the Valerie, managed to start off the week very well in this department, catching and releasing five striped marlin and eight dorados.  This made Valerie the boat with the most billfish catches this week.  However, we did see quite a number of boats catching sailfish this week as well.  The La Brisa had an outstanding day on Tuesday, with Ladean and Dorren and friends from Tulsa, OK, releasing a sailfish around 80 lbs as well as a striped marlin.  They also caught 25 dorados and two wahoos!  Dorado catch limits of two per angler were respected; both billfish were caught outside of Gaspareno.

Barbara and friends aboard the Tiburon also managed to catch and release two sailfish and one nice sized striped marlin around 180lbs on caballito bait outside of San Jaime and Pozo Cota.  They also caught one dorado on a blue and white lure in the same area.

OTHER SPECIES: 

Dorado topped the charts for the number one species caught by our boats, with all but twelve boats this week landing at least one.

It was hard to choose which was our leading boat this week as so many did an outstanding job and caught many fish, however the Rebecca wowed us with an awesome catch of 25 dorados and two striped marlin.  Again, dorado catch limits were respected and both marlin were released.  The dorado were all caught on lures, both white and blue as well as green, out at Gaspareno.

The Bill Collector had a great day on Saturday, with twelve dorados and four yellowfin tunas reeled in by Linda and friends from Virginia.  The dorados averaged about 20 lbs and the tuna averaged about 30-35 lbs, all were caught outside the Cerros de Arena and San Jaime on cedar plugs and blue and green lures.  The anglers also landed one striped marlin and one sailfish, both released.

The Listo, with anglers John Delaney and friends from Arkansas found luck outside of Golden Gate catching 18 dorados and four wahoo on lures and one striped marlin, released, on caballito bait.  The Andrea and anglers from New Jersey found wahoo and dorado luck at Migrino and Golden Gate, catching seven wahoos and thirteen dorados on lures: green, purple, and white and blue.

Other species caught this week were sierra, roosterfish, grouper, skipjack and bonitas.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: A few windy days but mostly good conditions.

WATER TEMP: 81-84 F

        Pancho, expert fish snatcher, surprises these anglers aboard Pisces Tiburon

BILLFISH: It’s great to finally have something to write about as boats gradually begin to get out fishing after the hurricane.  Fisherman are hardy, not easily deterred by  and are slowly trickling back into Cabo to take advantage of the fabulous fishing that the month of October offers.  Some of the first anglers to visit Cabo, came all the way from Denmark; Henrik had fished all over the world trying to catch a blue marlin on what had been a 25 year mission, but all it took was for him to come to Cabo to realize his dream.  He released his 150 lb blue along with a sailfish at Punta Gorda, aboard Pisces La Brisa on October 9th.  Florida anglers Christopher, Kevin & Rich had an amazing time aboard our new 31 ft Bertram Tiburon on October 13th , when they released four striped marlin and caught fifteen dorado, of which five were released and one was stolen by Pancho the sea lion.  Jeffrey and Cassandra from Eagan, Minnesota had a fabulous day aboard La Brisa, where they were kept busy catching and releasing two striped marlin and a sailfish, as well as reeling in five dorado.  Tiburon continued on a roll and managed to release a sailfish and catch sixteen dorado, for Jessie and Amanda, from Lafayette, Louisiana at Los Arcos – but they ran into the same problem, a sea lion thief.  Basically the catches this week had the same pattern, usually a single striped marlin or sailfish, combined with a bunch of dorado.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 23 billfish this week consisting of 18 striped marlin, 1 blue marlin and 4 sailfish, all released except for the blue that died and one other striper that was kept.

OTHER SPECIES:  Dorado was by far and away the top sportfish this week, with seventy nine percent of Pisces charters catching from one to seventeen fish in a day.  This is common for this time of year and also after a storm, when they congregate under floating debris.  The best catches of dorado were on the Pacific side from Los Arcos to Migrino and Pozo de Cota, with weights from 10 to 30 lbs.  They liked live caballito and sardines as well as a variety of lures – in other words they are hungry.  Tuna catches were slow, but that is because nobody is targeting them with dorado and billfish being so close.  There was one large one in the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament that weighed 180 lbs, so we know they are out there.  Cabolero was very fortunate to catch two wahoo for Edward and Williarm as well as thirteen dorado – size on the wahoo was not great at 20 lbs, but any size wahoo is tasty.  The only other catches we had were those of a few skipjacks.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Great; clear sunny skies, calm seas – one day there were whitecaps on the Pacific.
