MARLIN: We are sooooo happy to finally have some stable striped marlin catches and in fact they were our top catch this week.  Pisces Rebecca lead the way with four marlin up to 140 LBS and a pilot shark released on May 7th for Michael Francesconi and party from Georgia at the 11.50 spot.  Michael’s friends were out on Tracy Ann the same day and managed to release three marlin in the same area.  It’s easy to see why Rebecca is one of our top boats, as they again released four marlin up to 170 LBS on May 9th for anglers Charlie Piermarini, Jack Piermarini and Bob James – all on live bait at the 11.50 spot.  Tracy Ann had another triple header day on May 11th for Jason and Christy White from Colorado, once again the 11.50 spot was the place and caballito the bait.  Back to the 31 ft. Bertram Rebecca they had an amazing day for Trey Simon, Kristi Istre Ricky & Angie Chavez from Texas, with three striped marlin up to 160 LBS and FIVE pilot sharks up to 120 LBS, all released – thank you.  The Engel families, fellow Texans, were out on Valerie the same day and were pleased to release three marlin up to 140 LBS.  Fifty two percent of our charters caught marlin this week with many have more than one fish, giving us a total catch of 54 fish, with all but two released.  Our overall catch rate was 80% for all species, though we noted that those anglers that opted for a half day had significantly lower catch rates – moral of the story; take a full day.

OTHER SPECIES:  So plentiful are sharks right now that they almost need a dedicated section, of course the shark ban is in place until July 31st, but that doesn’t stop you from catching and releasing them.  This week we had pilot sharks – local name but probably silky or bronze whalers, a blue shark and threshers. Shambala our 60 FT Hatteras caught three thresher sharks up to 180 LBS as well as a pilot shark for Maarten Durent and friends from New Zealand.  Overall thirty nine percent of our charters caught sharks with a total of 30 caught and released.  It was nice to actually see some dorado this week, not many, but at least a start. Ruthless out on a half day managed to catch six up to 18 LBS eight miles out from the Lighthouse.  Just five percent of charters found dorado.  Tuna catches began to show this week as well with seven percent of boats managing to hook a few, most were school size fish, though Bill Collector was the exception with a 75 LB tuna caught by Art Muff from New Jersey, who was also very fortunate to release two striped marlin and a jack crevalle.  There is still small stuff available in shore but with the big game catches vastly improved not many boats tried for these species unless they were on half days, as there wasn’t enough time on these shorter trips to get to the marlin grounds and back.  Nine percent of our boats caught a mix of skipjacks, sheephead, triggerfish, lady fish and grouper.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report February 6 to 12, 2016

BILLFISH: We had anglers strictly interested in targeting the Striped Marlin this week, did not care the tuna season is good!  Some of them were successful in reeling such a magnificent fish, other anglers unfortunately were not that lucky, however they tried and promised to return to Cabo and give a shot again!  The fishing stills at least 30 miles out and more, over the Pacific Ocean.  The Pisces “Andrea” 28ft boat released a Striped Marlin, weight estimated 110lbs. and six tunas for Tom Stein, Steve Magner, Phil Healey and Kevin Salts from Lafayette, Indiana.  The other Pisces 28ft “Andrea” did its magic as well reeling in 120 lbs. Striped Marlin almost reaching Todos Santos town at Elias Calles, for William Chapel's group visiting from beautiful New Orleans, Louisiana.  On February 08th “Ruthless” 31ft Pisces Bertram got tight lines with a Striped Marlin released and brought six tunas as well (18-20 lbs.) twenty five miles out of the Herradura for Brad Hall, Holly Meyer, Kevin Smets, Jane Riehl and Chinyere Abosi from Los Angeles, California.  Pisces 35ft “Listo” got a good size 180 lbs. Striped Marlin which was successfully released for James Heller, Josh Karr, Randy Hughes, and Jason Jiongo from Redding, California at El Faro spot.  Of course “Tracy Ann” our 31ft vessel released a160 lbs. Marlin and two dorados in Punta Lobos for Cory Pardon, Lana Nogosek, Dan and Robin Sedevie visiting from cold Minot, in North Dakota for sure enjoying our mild winter. Twelve percent of our Pisces anglers released a total of 8 Striped Marlin.

OTHER SPECIES: Yellow fin tuna still being the primary catch with football sizes and still quite far out over on the Pacific;  Pisces “La Brisa” 31ft vessel caught sixteen tunas, between 10 to 20 lbs. twenty six miles out of the Cerro for Donald Frederick and Sue Johnson from Houston, Texas. “Rebecca” 31ft Pisces got tight lines for Duane Moyer's group from Gilberts Ville, PA reeling thirty five tunas (ten released) outside of Punta Lobos using feathers and cedar plugs.  “Valerie” 35ft Pisces brought thirty five tunas (ten released) in front of La Ballena, for Mike McCoy from Iowa.  “Adriana” 28ft Pisces vessel went outside of the Golden Gate with Peter Menge and Lisa Rudick from Manitoba, Canada and brought eleven yellow fin tunas, estimated weight 20 lbs.  On February 10th the “C Rod” 38ft vessel brought a Wahoo of 20 lbs. very lucky as being the only wahoo catch, indeed happy anglers Katherine and Hudson Swaffard, Harris English and Helen Marie Bowers visiting from Saint Simmons, Georgia.  “Shambala” 60ft Hatteras had a run to Punta Lobos and got tight lines for the persistent group from Florida, Clayton Hummel, Abby Figueroa, Carlos Vasquez, Dan Kirkpatrick and Jeffrey Stewart and brought fifteen yellow fin tunas and the “Tracy Ann” 31ft Pisces ran forty miles out of the Old Light House for Daniel Carpenter from Montgomery, New York and reeled fifteen tunas as well.  The Dorado catches are being spotted with live bait such as caballito and we are seeing the football sizes from 18 to 20 lbs. excellent for a good dinner time.  “La Brisa” 31ft Pisces boat brought one mahi- mahi from Todos Santos for Jonathan Colton and Natalie Kresich from San Francisco, California. “Ruthless” Pisces 31ft brought another one between the 95 spot and 11.50 spot for the Padalia family from Tallahassee, FL.  And Bill Collector 32ft vessel brought four tunas and one Dorado 36 miles at the 210 spot for Mark Chiavetta and friends.  Sixty one percent of the Pisces anglers brought 397 yellow fin tunas, the eleven percent brought 8 Dorado and the other species the twelve percent, consisted in one wahoo and small trigger fish and skip jacks that where released.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report January 16 - 22, 2016

BILLFISH:  Marlin fishing this week was not an easy thing, with a big moon and fussy eaters it was hard to get a hook up.  Fish were seen but both the marlin and bait were hard to hook up.  We heard reports of marlin activity before the sun came up but once it was daylight their activity slowed down, giving credence to the belief that when there is a big moon they feed at night and are not hungry during the day.  Nevertheless thirty seven percent of our charters were able to find and fight striped marlin.  We also heard of a 400 LB blue marlin caught this week; an exception on a slow day.  Pisces Rebecca had one of the best catches of the week on January 18th, when they released three striped marlin between 100 and 130 LBS between Pozo de Cota and Margaritas for Justin Tidwell and friends from Arizona.  Equaling the Rebecca was latest edition to the fleet Hot Rod who released three marlin up to 150 LBS a little further up the coast at Golden Gate for Kirk Kindred and party from California. Other catches were of one or two marlin per boat, when found, giving us a total of 31 striped marlin.

OTHER SPECIES: What kept anglers busy this week, if the anglers didn’t mind a long ride out offshore was the yellowfin tuna.  Boats could load up on huge numbers of small tuna with the occasional larger fish mixed in.  Pisces Ruthless for example caught forty eight tuna (many released) thirty miles out from Land’s End for Scott Lindsey and friends from Illinois.  Randy Wolf  and buddies from California had perhaps one of the best days of the week aboard Pisces Valerie, they released a striped marlin and then went on to muscle in forty two forty two tuna on January 22nd at San Jaime.  Others catches were of five to twenty five fish, with plenty of double digit catches – our total tuna catch was of 316 fish with forty three percent of charters finding this species.  Dorado catches continue to slow with just ten boats finding one or two fish, which is normal for this time of year.  We had a nice size wahoo again this week, this time aboard Knot Workin which weighed in at 62 LBS caught by Bradley Lukkasson from San Francisco.  Inshore the boats had varied catches with triggerfish by the dozen, some ladyfish, skipjacks, yellowtail, sheep heads, grouper and snappers.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report January 9 - 15, 2016

BILLFISH:  This week Cabo enjoyed beautiful weather with sunny skies, cool nights and mostly calm seas which produced some great catches for our anglers – nearly every boat out caught fish this week.  Pisces anglers enjoyed a successful day fishing ninety five percent of the time this period.  Catch of the week was that of Ed Purcell from Milwaukee, Wisconsin – a lake angler who had the thrill of his life when he hooked up an out of season black marlin aboard Pisces Ruthless. The fish took dead bait at San Jaime and took about forty minutes to bring to the boat – weight was just under 300 LBS, well done Ed!  Striped marlin were the species anglers were most likely to encounter this past week with steady catches of up to three fish between and 100 and 140 LBS. Pisces Ruthless was having a good week not only did they get the black marlin, but they also released three striped marlin at La Antena, two on live bait and one on a petrolero lure for a group from California headed up by David Moore. The Brown family from Austin, Texas fished a little further at Golden Gate, aboard Pisces Andrea and were also able to release three marlin and boat a dorado.  Tracy Ann always seems to make the fish report and this week is no exception; they had a triple marlin day on January 15th for David Bales and friends from San Diego also fishing at Golden Gate on the Pacific. The Gibsons from Texas had a fabulous day aboard Pisces Valerie with three striped marlin ranging in size from 80 to 140 LBS off of Las Margaritas. Pisces anglers caught a total of 70 striped marlin and 1 black marlin this week.

OTHER SPECIES: Although dorado was pretty steady this week, we can see that they are starting to wind down.  Catches were seldom of more than one to three fish with weights up to 20 LBS.  Twenty four percent of our boats caught dorado for a total catch of 28 fish.  Yellow fin tuna catches were on the slow side and you had to go to San Jaime to find them – Pisces Bill Collector had one of the best days when they caught a dozen for the Haith family from Boise, Idaho – the fish were football size and took cedar plugs and feathers. Other catches were of between one and ten fish.  Just a couple of small wahoo were caught this week. Sharks seem to be moving back into the area – we had the first pilot shark that we have seen in weeks.  Inshore we are starting to get some small mako sharks. Pangas are starting to see great inshore action with multiple catches of ladyfish, skipjacks, small snappers and groupers.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report January 2 - 8, 2016

BILLFISH: Fishing in 2016 got off to a good with steady catches of striped marlin and dorado and a nice appearance of tuna too.  Weather seems to be back on track and we have been experiencing cool evenings and brisk early mornings which the fish seem to like.  The marlin bite is not in super strong swing but is totally acceptable with sixty five percent of the boats catching between one and three striped marlin in a day, with the odd sailfish here and there along with some late season blue marlin.  Water temperature is still a little warmer than normal - it should be 70 F but is right around 74 F, which may explain why we haven’t seen the mass migration from further north that usually takes place around this time.  On January 2nd, Pisces Tracy Ann released three striped marlin, all on the small side, just before San Jaime, for good friend Rick Walsh, who also boated a small tuna.  This same day, new addition to the fleet Hot Rod released two striped marlin and caught two dorado and a wahoo; a very satisfactory day for a group of Tennessee anglers.  Next day out 28 ft. Andrea fished a different area between one and seven miles off of Land’s End and managed to catch three striped marlin, bigger at 120 to 140 LBS for Isaac and May visiting from Denver.  Another boat with a triple marlin day was La Brisa with the Levine family from Austin on board.  Their marlin ranged from 100 to 140 LBS and were caught on live caballito at Pozo de Cota on the Pacific side – the two dorado they landed took lures.  This same boat repeated their success with three marlin on January 8th for Matt and Hunter Robinson from Texas as they fished at Los Arcos.  The fish released were from 80 to 140 LBS and all took live bait.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 77 billfish this week, consisting of 74 striped marlin and 3 sailfish.  Marlin was the top sportfish catch this week for Pisces anglers.

OTHER SPECIES: After marlin, dorado was the most likely catch, the difference here was that multiple catches were more likely with catches of up to nine fish per day as large as 25 LBS.  West Bend, Wisconsin anglers James, Jason, Sam & Steve were pleased to catch nine dorado near La Antena as well as release a striped marlin aboard Pisces Andrea.  La Brisa, fishing a little closer at Migrino managed eighty dorado this same day for Simendinger family, all on live bait.  Our total dorado count this week was 140 fish.  Yellowfin tuna showed up at one of their favorite haunts, San Jaime, but were not a sure thing.  Ruthless released one of the smallest yellowfin tunas we have ever seen at around 2 LBS.  One of the top tuna producers was C Rod who had twenty tunas up to 20 LBS at San Jaime for the Bradley family from Texas, who used both cedar plugs and kite to get hooked up.  It was interesting to see a different species of tuna close to the yellowfin, skipjacks; usually found closer to shore.   Thirteen percent of our charters found yellowfin and when encountered catches of up to twenty fish could be had, resulting in a total tuna catch of 97fish.  The skipjacks weren’t found by so many boats, but when you hit the school you could load up, in fact our anglers caught 88 of these little guys, with many released; they are strong on light tackle.  The BIG STORY this week is the largest wahoo we have seen in 15 years – the monster fish hit a Chiwillie lure off of Margaritas with such ferocity that the crew thought it was a sea lion at first. Dean Reed from Cape Canaveral reeled in this beauty on Tracy Ann, which when weighed on a certified scale was 87 LBS!  Several other smaller wahoo were caught this week but none came close to this one.  Pangas inshore were able to catch stray marlin plus a few sierra and pompano.

WEATHER: Light rain on New Year’s Day, partly cloudy skies that cleared midweek with some chop on the Pacific depending on wind.

BILLFISH: Ho, ho ho!, it feels like Christmas time in Cabo and it looks the billfish have spread out between the steady Pacific side and some parts of Cabo, more specifically between Chileno and Cabo del Sol this week.  “Valerie” Pisces 35ft had a nice day reeling in a Striped Marlin estimated at 180 lbs., one dorado and a small tuna for Peter Karras, Carlos Goncalves and Jomar Labuschagne, visiting Cabo for the first time, coming from Portugal and South Africa!  Pisces “Cabolero” 31ft released a striped Marlin in San Jaime Bank for Jesse & Julie Prather, Mike Summers and Tim Burgarner from Caldwell, Idaho. “Poseidon” Pisces 25ft panga is not a big boat, but nevertheless kept lines busy with a Striped Marlin and four dorado up to 20lbs. for Elbert and Betty Bivins from Jackson, at the Cerros de Arena, on the Pacific side.  Pisces “Tiburon” 31ft also had a great day for a group of Swedish angling friends: Bernt Olson, Nicholas Lund, Sten Gumar and Kjell Kironvall who fought two Striped Marlins and a Sailfish in the same area. “Ruthless” 31ft Bertram headed to La Ballena, over on the Pacific and released a Striped Marlin and two dorados for Kurtis, Shayne and Tyler Millhollin visiting from beautiful Santa Barbara, Ca. “Speedwell” 38ft Pisces reeled two Striped Marlin and three dorados in San Cristobal and Pozo  Cota for Mike, Anna, Tom and Kevin Cole from Sacramento, Ca. good job Captain Piranha!  “Rebecca” Pisces 31ft reeled a Blue Marlin 200 lbs. estimated weight, the crew used a “flying” lure (volador) at the 11.50 spot for more Swedish anglers: Ola Eklund, Johan Ingenmansson and Peter Mucander, good job!  Another Blue and Striped Marlin released aboard “Bill Collector” 32ft Pisces, estimated weight 200 lbs. the crew used the volador lure as well for Frank, Neil an Nancy Muller visiting  from Woodland, California.  On December 17th the “Adriana" and the “Andrea” 28ft ´s Pisces boats did a back to back releasing  two striped marlin outside of the Cerro, for Brian, David, Joselyn & Matt Berry from Grant Bay, Ca. and Brian & Mitchell Sussman from Los Angeles, Ca. respectively.  Finally on December 18th the “Yahoo” 42ft Bertram released two Striped Marlin between 120-130 lbs. outside of the Cerro  for Charlene and John Hattner de Keller, Texas and Jonathan Beyeler from Broadway, Va.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 64 Billfish this week with most successfully released consisting of 58 Striped Marlin, 3 Sailfish and 3 Blue Marlin.

 

 

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado still being quite steady, ranging sizes from 10 to 30 lbs. “Adriana” 28ft Pisces got four dorados  at Migriño for Jeff & Sam Smith from Corpus Christy and Othis Johnson from Houston, Texas.  “Valerie” 35ft Pisces got three dorados with live bait in Pozo Cota for Kathy Sherman from Cheyenne, Wyoming and Linda & Burt Black from Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Captain Ray & Fernando aboard “La Brisa” 31ft Pisces reeled four mahi-mahi estimated 15-30 lbs., at el Cerro del Golden for John Summer group visiting from Camden, Delaware.  “Shambala” 60ft vessel caught five dorados in Margaritas for Alan & Austin Jenkins, Carter Powell & Francis Straw from Sacramento, Ca. and the “Andrea” 28ft Pisces brought six dorados at La Ballena for Jeremy & John Highfill from Fairbanks, Alaska.  Panga “Poseidon” did reel a 35lbs wahoo in front of Cabo del Sol for Jeff Smith group and the “Adriana” 28ft Pisces brought another wahoo 20lbs. at Migriño.  Pangas has been quite successful for Marlin, wahoo and tunas; Panga 23ft “Jessica” Pisces got for the Bivins group six yellow fin tunas, football sizes and really good for lunch. Pisces clients got a total of 81 dorados, 14 tunas and 4 wahoos, representing the 43% for dorado  and the 12% for the Other species.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Nov 20-27, 2015

BILLFISH: Another great week for late season blue marlin catches in Cabo!  We are not used to seeing all these blues so late in the year and surely this is the result of the “El Niño” current which has brought consistent warm water throughout the year and therefore steady, good catches.  Let's start with the Pisces 28ft “Adriana” who released a blue marlin estimated at 200 lbs. outside of la Herradura for Ulf Cristiansson and Lennart Arrenius visiting from Sweden. Pisces 38ft “C Rod” released another 200 lb. blue outside of el Cerro for William Gluckman and Sonia Schaeffer from New Jersey along with one Dorado and two yellow fin tuna. Pisces “Andrea” headed up to the San Jaime Bank and released yet another blue marlin for Allyson, Sean, Chris and Lizzie Park from Nashville, Texas. “Bill Collector” our 32 ft. Cabo, worked really hard and got a 350 lbs. blue marlin, forty miles out from Land’s End for Richard & Grey Simoncic and Joseph Zucarello from Paradise, Az.  To round up the blue marlin catches Pisces 55 ft. “Flora T” released 250 lbs. blue some way up the Pacific coast at Migriño, for Wade & Forrest Threadgill from Austin, TX.  Pisces “Speedwell” a 38 ft. Mediterranean released one Striped Marlin, one sailfish and one dorado for Jason Allen, Brian Van Holland and Narciso Flores from Laguna Hills, Ca. at La Antena close to Migriño.  Brian Dodd and friends from Colorado and Montana fished aboard 31ft Pisces “Tiburon” and were really pleased releasing their first Striped Marlin!  “Cabolero” released two Striped marlin and one dorado at the Old light house for John Thompson & Diana Goettle from Helena, Montana. Pisces 31ft “Rebecca” and 31ft “Tracy Ann” with our good friends Anders Lundgren of Sweden released two Striped Marlin, one Sailfish at the 95 Spot and two Striped Marlin at the 11.50 spot during their last trip of this year”.   Pisces “Ruthless” did well too with one striped marlin released and ten dorados at Elias Gaspareño for Ken & Elizabeth Kerr, Kevin and Laura Atamamuk from San Clemente. Pisces “Valerie” released two Striped Marlin and boated two dorados, two sierras and released two rooster fish at the Golden Gate for Susan, Eddie and Katie Janecheck from Costa Mesa & Sacramento, Ca.  Panga Poseidon released a striped marlin at the Old Lighthouse for Mike & Erin Elgru from South Carolina.  Eighty five percent of Pisces Anglers released a total of 79 billfish, consisting in 69 Striped Marlin, 5 Blue and 5 sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado fishing was hot this week, with seventy of our clients catching a total of 341 dorado, ranging from 10 to 25 lbs. Tuna catches were on the slow side with just nine percent of our anglers bringing in a total of 35 yellow fin tuna, ranging in size from 10 to 15 lbs.  Four of our vessels brought in wahoo, whilst others caught rooster fish, needlefish and sierras which are excellent for making ceviche.  Pisces “Bill Collector” brought in eight dorados , with one released at La Ballena, on the Pacific side for the Stein Family visiting from Miami, Fl.  Pisces Shambala a  60 ft. Hatteras, caught five dorados at Elias Calles for Manuel Araujo and Stephanie & Matthew Mason from Houston, TX.  On November 25th the majority of boats had a great day for dorado fishing, such as Pisces “Tiburon”, “Ruthless”, “Tracy Ann” over at the Golden Gate. Pisces “Andrea” caught six tunas for Paul Smith and Tom Dufell from United Kingdom at San Jaime.  

LOCATION: Pacific Side -Golden Gate, La Ballena, San Jaime, El Faro, Elías Calles, Pescadero. Sea of Cortes: 11.50, 95 spot. 

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Rain on a couple of days which cause the port to be closed for two days due to tropical storm Sandra. Cool, nice, overcast, cloudy a little choppy. The outlook is for excellent fishing.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Nov 14-20, 2015

BILLFISH: Another great and busy week in Cabo for billfish with an increase of thirty one percent over last week.   We are still seeing a late run of Blue Marlin in the area coming in general from different fishing grounds spread over the Pacific side and the Cortez side.  Art Hevener, Sean Ziconi and the rest of the Hevener´s gang Arthur and William, released a 350 lbs. blue marlin on November 16th aboard the 31ft Halcon.  The group of Anders Lundgren from Sweden on their yearly visit to Cabo managed to release a blue marlin on Pisces “Tiburon” outside of the 11.50 spot.  Twenty eight foot  Pisces “Andrea” went all the way to the Golden Gate making a memorable trip for father and son Jim and Brandon Boyd, from Bal Harbor, FL. Released a 200 lb. blue; good job guys!  On the other hand Stefan Trumstedt, Kjell Ljunggren and Jens Bergstrom had a great fight on the Pisces “Rebecca” releasing another blue marlin and four striped marlin on November 18th.  But we have more!  Another group visiting from England, headed up by Bob Challis, Peter Gurd and Paul Smith did well on the 35ft Valerie releasing a 250 lbs. blue marlin at Cabeza de Ballena in the Sea of Cortez.  Pisces 32 ft. “Bill Collector” with Brian & Lori Swift, James and Wendy Yale from Texas aboard did well releasing a 210 lbs. blue marlin and dorados over at San Jaime Bank. Pisces 38ft “C Rod” our most recent winner from the Tuna Tournament battled another blue marlin for William Gluckman and Sonia Schaefer from New Jersey.  More Swedish anglers in town!  Ulf Christiansen and Lennart Arrenius, first timers are huge billfish fans and decided to visit our areas, which paid off as they released a blue marlin and a sailfish aboard the 28ft Pisces “Adriana”; they are promising to return next year!  Loads of striped marlin released as well!  Pisces 35ft “Listo” released three striped marlin at San Jaime, with the Alexis Hodges group, Cecile, Angie and James visiting from Woodrock, Georgia and Phoenix, Arizona.  Pisces “Shambala” our 60 ft. Hatteras had one of the rarest of billfish catches, a Shortbill Pacific Spearfish, a fish few anglers can claim to have caught in the Los Cabos area.   Captain Nayo mentioned this is his first one in over 40 years fishing!  The crew also managed to release a Striped Marlin at the Herradura for the John Pappanastos group visiting from Houston, Dallas. That’s what we call lucky!  The fish was kept for local scientists to study. Pisces 31ft “Ruthless” was hot on November 18th releasing four Striped Marlin and two dorados for Bruce Tysor and friends visiting from Sidney, Iowa at Punta Lobos.  Our good friend Bob Stewart and friends aboard the 38ft Pisces “Speedwell” released a 307 lbs. blue marlin, one Striped Marlin, two dorados and one rooster at Migriño putting them in top spot at the Los Cabos Charter Boat Classic Tournament.  “Flora T” fished at Elias Calles, on the Pacific side and released a black marlin estimated at 220 lbs.  The anglers Steve Dick and Kristen Worth from Seattle, Washington were very happy!  Pisces 31 ft.  “Cabolero” released a sailfish and six tunas at the Old light house for Chris Zanoni, Paul Dornell, Steve Bankis and Thomas Hafner all of them visiting from California. 43% of Pisces anglers caught a total 73 billfish this week with most successfully released, consisting of 54 Striped Marlin, 8 Blue Marlin, 9 Sailfish, 1 Black Marlin and 1 Spearfish.

 

 

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado and tuna were quite popular this week; with sizes ranging from 10 to 30 lbs. Pisces “Adriana” found a school of yellow fin tuna outside of San Jaime for Jacob and Tim Brownlee from Austin, TX. 30 lbs. dorados spotted at Cabeza de Ballena aboard the panga” Tres Amigos” with our good friend Bob Dicheck  and frineds visiting from New Jersey.  Welcome back Bob!  Pisces “Tracy Ann” managed four tunas at the 220 spot for our Swedish group as well.  “Hot Rod” brought in 38 lbs. wahoo off of Pescadero with Jake and Stephanie Burnside from Houston, Texas.  Pisces 42ft “Yahoo” and Captain Ricardo Escamilla released 9 out of 10 dorados for Walter and Valinda Weible from Houston, Texas and James Hedge and Scott Hamilton from Orlando, Florida.  Good Job!  The dorado were 18 to 30 lbs. with the best spot at Golden Gate.  Inshore we caught Jack Crevelle, needlefish, roosterfish from 3 to 8 lbs. all taken on the Pacific side.  Forty percent of our anglers caught 76 Dorado and 88 yellowfin tunas, eight percent of the catches were of other species such as wahoo and inshore smaller fish.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Nov 7 - 13, 2015

BILLFISH: Marlin fishing is in a transition stage right now, that is, the catches are still good, but we are waiting for an influx of striped marlin from further up the Pacific.  In the meantime we are still seeing catches of late season blue & black marlin as well as sailfish.  Weather is starting to change which means fishing can be less consistent on a daily basis.  Hot Rod, the latest addition to the fleet is already proving to be one of our best & this crew did not disappoint for Dave Bulthuis, Costa Del Mar tournament sponsor, when they were able to release his son Chet’s first ever blue marlin which was tagged & released, estimated at 220 LBS on November 7th.  This wasn’t the only great catch this day; Pisces Yahoo released a much sought after black marlin, not huge at around 160 LBS, but nevertheless a nice catch for Craig Bentham from Canada Dan Brendes & friends had a great day out aboard Pisces Listo on November 10th when they were able to release three striped marlin & boat four dorado up to 20 LBS at Pozo de Cota.  Out this same day was the Mercier group from Florida aboard Pisces Valerie who did even a little better with four striped marlin released & three dorado boated.  Not to be left out and with a respectable catch of three marlin released & eight dorado was Yahoo with Florida anglers Francesca & George Filafas. Pisces Tracy Ann always seems to make the fish report & this week was no exception; on November 12th, Corey Hopkins, Ron & Paige Simonson fished outside the Herradura & did very well to catch & release a blue marlin, two striped marlin & eight yellow fin tuna.  Pretty much all the catches were on the Pacific side.  Forty three percent of Pisces anglers caught a total of 66 billfish this week, consisting of 60 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin, 1 black marlin & 3 sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado was the most popular catch this week with a respectable 213 fish caught by sixty percent of our anglers.  Catches ranged from one to eleven fish with weights from 15 to 30 LBS.  Pisces La Brisa had one of the better dorado catches with eleven caught off of Elias Calles, plus a striped marlin released, a little further up at Golden Gate for George Fee & party from New Jersey.  Another boat to do well & keep their anglers busy all day was Pisces Rebecca with ten dorado, one roosterfish & one needlefish.  Another high dorado boat was Tracy Ann with not only eight dorado, but two striped marlin released & two roosterfish for British anglers Gary Morrison & Kevin Moreton.  Although lures did work, live caballito was definitely the way to get more hook ups.  Tuna catches were on a par with last week at sixteen percent, but when found the catches tended to be multiple & up to fourteen fish, though the norm was three to ten fish.  Our total tuna catch was of 92 fish.  Roosterfish increased slightly but were seldom bigger than 10 or 15 LBS. Inshore triggerfish, needlefish, bonitas, skipjacks & sierra were all caught but in conservative quantities.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report October 24 - 30, 2015

BILLFISH:  You can definitely notice a change of season is underway in Cabo.  We don’t really have four seasons, but rather have summer and spring.  The heat is finally beginning to abate somewhat and we have had our first cooler evenings and early mornings.  All this signals a slowdown on blue marlin and sailfish and an increase on striped marlin.  Nevertheless water temperatures remain in the 80’s which keeps the blues and sails hanging around.  Live bait became scarce mid-week and a full moon disappointed a few anglers as marlin refused to cooperate some days.  Overall though excellent fishing with some superb catches.  Claudia Cooper along with Mike and Stephen Walsh were out aboard on of our smaller boats, 28 ft.  Andrea, they headed up the Sea of Cortez to Destiladeras, over 20 miles away, but it paid off when they were able to release three striped marlin up 120 LBS and a sailfish.  Later on in the week this same group and boat went on to release a blue marlin and boat six tuna. Thirty one foot Bertram, Ruthless has been on a roll for blue marlin and didn’t disappoint this week either, releasing a 250 LB specimen at the 11.50 spot for Courtney and Jared from Waco, Texas.  This same day, October 25th, Tracy Ann had lucky Texan anglers from Rockwall, George Hearn and friends aboard; two sailfish and a blue marlin was there tally off of San Jose.  How about three striped marlin, two sailfish and a dorado?  That was the sum of the catch for Darrell Brock and brothers from Texas, aboard Bill Collector off of Golden Gate on the Pacific. Speedwell had an enviable catch for the Flora family from Englewood, California.  They were kept busy releasing two striped marlin, two sailfish and boating a wahoo and skipjack.  Modesto angler Troy Bergman headed up the group aboard Valerie when they had a five billfish day consisting of four stripers and a sailfish.  Brian Livingstone and friends from Charlevoix, MI had an action packed day aboard Tiburon on October 28th when they released FIVE striped marlin and boated a dorado.  Closing out the week with a higher than regular catch was La Brisa with four striped marlin released for Michael and Ann Leroux, who also got a nice dorado for the table.  There were many other great catches, simply too many to mention.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 114 billfish this week, consisting of 82 striped marlin, 29 sailfish and 3 blue marlin.
 

OTHER SPECIES:  The dorado that has been absent all summer have finally shown up and we saw some nice catches of between one and nine fish for a portion of the fleet.  Thirty four percent of charters were pleased to be able to boat fish in the 15 to 35 LB class and to have some nice eating fish to take home.  Top dorado boat was Ruthless for catching nine off of Las Margaritas on the Pacific for Aaron and Jennifer from Houston – the smaller ones were released.  Speedwell was another boat that did well on dorado; they got seven as well as a wahoo and three striped marlin for Jim Dustin and Joe Frey.  Our total dorado count was seventy four fish.  Tuna catches dropped down a bit this week as dorado moved into the area and boats tried for these, as they were closer in along with striped marlin.  We did see a few big fish, such as a 288 LB monster caught aboard Mucho Bueno.  Our smaller twenty eight foot boats caught the biggest tuna this week starting out with Andrea who had both a 189 LB and a 152 LB, both quality fish they would probably hit a prize in the upcoming Tuna Jackpot – these anglers caught a total of six tuna and released a blue marlin too – well done to Claudia Cooper, Mike and Stephen Walsh from Colorado.  San Diego angler Blake Robinson landed a 120 LB tuna just below San Jaime on a green and yellow lure aboard Adriana.  Catches ranged from one to ten tuna per boat, when found and our total catch was of eighty seven fish.  It was nice to see fair activity on wahoo with several boats catching fish in the 30 to 40 LB class. The only other fish we caught this week were a few skipjack and a single lemon shark.

WEATHER: Clear sunny skies, some wind on the Pacific especially towards the end of the week, when it blew hard in the week. Moderate seas.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report October 17 - 23, 2015

BILLFISH:  An exciting week in Cabo culminating in the Bisbee Black & Blue Marlin Tournament resulting in a huge payday for Costa Rican charter boat Tranquilo, not only did they win the Bisbee Offshore they took third place in the Black & Blue with a 327 lb. blue marlin, but because they were in all the different jackpots they took home more dinero than first or second place - $2,511,462.00 USD was added to the cash they had already won a few days before to give them a grand total of $2,971,662.00 and yes, that is dollars.  First place was taken by local charter boat Rondinella for a 500 lb. blue marlin on the last day for a group of Canadian anglers headed up by Tyler Squire which netted them $356,255.00.  Second place also went to another local charter boat, what a Journey for Texan anglers who landed a 356 lb. blue and took $156,937.00 in prize money.  Although regular charter business was brisk and productive the same could not be said of the tournament fishing resulting in one of the slowest Bisbee’s we can remember.  Of the 121 teams competing over three days only three qualifying fish were weighed in.  Pisces Sportfishing boats competing did quite well with Ruthless releasing a blue marlin each day, unfortunately though the anglers had not entered the release division (take note….always enter the release division).  The top release boat only had two and won $72,000.00!  In regular business we had some superb catches; Tracy Ann released ten striped marlin on the Pacific side for Patrick & Jeanne Neville from Bradenton, Florida on October 17th – this same day the panga Gloria managed to release four marlin for British angler Devine Jones.  Tiburon released a 300 LB blue marlin and boated eight tuna for Barb & Keith Mehlenbacher at the Jaime Bank.  Tracy Ann cranked it up again on October 20th and managed to catch eight striped marlin at Golden Gate for the Roxbergs from Minnesota.  This same day 28 ft. Andrea released five striped marlin up to 180 lbs. for Doug Logan and friends from Seattle, who also boated a dorado.  Though not in the tournament our 35 ft. Cabo Knot Workin landed a 354 LB blue marlin for a group from Texas on a day where no qualifying fish were weighed at the tournament.  Boats fishing in the tournament were only targeting blue and black marlin, so our catch rate is a little lower than it could have been, as there was plenty of striped marlin around.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 135 striped marlin, 11 sailfish and 9 blue marlin.

OTHER SPECIES:  Tuna catches were good this week with a total of 228 fish caught by our anglers, with catches ranging from one to eighteen fish in a day.  A little under half of the boats managed to land this tasty species and some were of a good size which bodes well for the upcoming WON Tuna Tournament.  Flora T II  landed a nice fish that weighed in at 147 LBS which they caught with a skipjack (is that cannibalism?) for angler Andre Gauron.  On October 19th 28 ft. Andrea had a great day for Felix Forjet and friends at San Jaime, where they caught seven tuna up to 110 lbs. and released a striped marlin too.  Cabolero did well with Alaskan anglers on board when they caught nine tuna up to 100 LBS, plus a nice wahoo and sailfish released.  Lots of sharks around at the moment – Bill Collector released five pilot sharks and boated a dozen tuna for Richard Prather & Meli Baum from Texas. Another one of our boats released an aggressive bull shark.  Other catches were the odd roosterfish, skipjacks, wahoo and a couple of early sierra.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report September 12 - 18, 2015

BILLFISH:  Fishing was outstanding this week in Los Cabo with plenty of action for anglers; the result showing in a ninety six percent success rate overall with a generous portion of that number attributed to billfish.  The week started out on a good note with Tracy Ann catching and releasing three striped marlin and a sailfish, between the 95 and 11.50 spots for Jeremy Ross & friends from Lufkin, Texas.  The fish took a combination of bait and lures.  Our first blue marlin of the week was brought to the boat, after a two hour fight, by Ben Jones from Austin, Texas aboard Adriana.  The fish was estimated at 200 LBS & hit a green & yellow lure ten miles out from Land’s End, before being safely released.  September 14th saw incredible action for fishermen, as Bill Collector released a 350 LB blue marlin outside the 95 spot, also on a green lure for Robert & Sara Wallace, from Texas who were fishing with Chrism & Kimberly Cain & Matthew & Shelby Baugh. This same day Tracy Ann headed 30 miles out & ended up releasing FIVE sailfish & boating ten tuna for Dave Smith & friends, also from Texas.  Valerie released a 200 LB blue at the 95 spot on a live caballito for Andrew Scoggin from Memphis, Tennessee.  La Brisa also managed a blue marlin this day for Nigel Ashurst & party who also boated a 110 LB tuna.  Jay & Paige Pegel - father and daughter from Fountain, Colorado had their hands full on September 16th aboard 28 ft. Adriana as they released FIVE striped marlin & a pilot shark as well as boating six tuna – now that’s a lot of fish!  Andrea, C Rod & Knot Workin also had blue marlin released in the 180 to 250 LB category.  Hot Rod, the latest addition to Pisces had a fun day on September 18th for Gary Stricker & friends as they released two striped marlin, two sailfish & boated four tuna.  Other notable catches this same day were aboard 31ft Bertram Tiburon where two blue marlin were released forty miles out for Darwin Zavadil & Weston Smith & Tracy Ann, also a 31 ft. Bertram for three sailfish, two striped marlin & three tuna for Dave Smith, who fished several days. Pisces anglers caught a total of 82 billfish this week consisting of 39 striped marlin, 33 sailfish & 10 blue marlin.  The marlin & sailfish action was the surest catch this week.

OTHER SPECIES:  Tuna catches took off in a great way but we don’t know how long this will last as we have spotted huge commercial tuna boats in the area which may have a negative impact.  Even though anglers love to catch this challenging species we have to keep in mind that tuna is not classified as a sportsfish but rather is viewed as a commercial resource by the Mexican government.  Knot Workin started us off with a couple of nice tuna at 130 and 150 LBS each (bigger than a lot of the marlin caught), with one caught on a kite & the other on a yellow lure by David Kroczak & party.  La Brisa also had a sizeable tuna with a 158 LB fish for Tim Carson from Puyallup, WA. Nobody could top Dave Smith’s huge 249 LB & 167 LB tunas caught on Tracy Ann 35 miles out – oh & they released a sailfish too.  Tuna catches ranged from one to twenty fish, with sizes ranging from 5 LB (released) to the big fish mentioned above, with catches predominantly on the Pacific side.  Just a couple of dorado were caught this week, which makes us wonder if commercial boats are making a dent in their stocks.  Seventeen percent of our catches were made up of skipjacks, triggerfish, bonitas, grouper, amberjack & a single wahoo. 

LOCATION: San Jaime, 95 spot, 11.50 spot, 10-30 miles out from Lands’ End, Herradura, 20 to 40 miles out from the Old Lighthouse.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot & humid, some scattered heavy rain showers, seas moderate to calm.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report September 5 - 11, 2015

BILLFISH:  One of the best weeks of the year for billfish, even though the port was closed for two days due to the proximity of Hurricane Linda.  The biggest fish we’ve seen so far this year was landed off of San Jose aboard a 22 ft. panga Viviana I on September 11th by local angler Carlos Cota Lucero.  The huge black marlin weighed in at 765 lbs. and took just two and a half hours to boat.  The next day this same location produced another black marlin, caught aboard Alexandriana with Captain Antonio Guluarte; this fish was 436 lbs. and took a Chiwilie lure at the Inner Gordo Bank – thanks to Erick from La Playita for passing us the news on these two admirable fish.  Early on in the week we had some smaller blue marlin, such as one landed aboard Contessa 85 feet out on a pleasure cruise; the fish was estimated at a little over 100 lbs. and was caught by the Valbh family from Florida just one mile out for the arch.  This same day Australian angler Brett Hewerdine and friends fished aboard 55 ft. Flora T and were thrilled to release a 250 lb. blue marlin they caught at Punta Gorda on a petrolero lure, as well as a wahoo, dorado and skipjack.  On September 7th Bill Collector did really well to release a blue marlin and two sailfish at the 11.50 spot for Jennifer Hill & Stephen Kelly from Texas.  This same day fellow Texan Clint Herbst and friends were out on Listo but on the Pacific side, 32 miles out form the Old Lighthouse, where they released two sailfish, a striped marlin and boated three tuna up to 120 lbs.  Tracy Ann fished in close this day at 4 miles and released a 250 lb. blue marlin for Arkansas anglers Craig and Donna Wing.  Most anglers shut out by the rain on the 8th & 9th shut out by the rain, were able to reschedule which was a good thing, as fishing seemed to get even better.  Tracy Ann picked the pace right up after two day in port and scored two striped marlin and two sailfish for Thomas & Rebecca Hobb from Pikeville, Kentucky on September 10th at the 95 spot.  To close out the week Cabolero had an outstanding catch of five sailfish and a striped marlin nine miles out from Lands’ End by Aaron & Charles Earnhardt from Tennessee.  Not far behind, it was again Tracy Ann  with three sailfish and striped marlin released at the 11.50 spot for Jeff Anderson fishing with Jeremy & Amy Ross, all on live bait, this same day.  Billfish were the most common catch this week, with seventy nine percent of our charters catching big game species.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 54 billfish consisting of 18 striped marlin, 32 sailfish and 4 blue marlin. 

OTHER SPECIES:  This week we did see an improvement on smaller game with twenty one percent of boats landing dorado, however, catches were seldom more than one or two fish and usually no bigger than 15 lbs.  Tuna catches were a bit slower at fifteen percent but some of the fish did have some size to them at the 100 lb. plus mark.  We also know of a 300 lb. plus tuna caught aboard Fourplay out of La Playita.  Wahoo were a blessing this week with catches of this tasty fish quite steady with catches of up to three fish per boat as large as 50 lbs. Inshore triggerfish, grouper and skipjacks were caught.  One of the pangas we sent, Tres Amigos, did exceptionally well to release a sailfish and a hammerhead shark and catch eight tuna up to 20 lbs. for William Morris & Frank Brown from Texas.  

LOCATION: Boats fished both sides the Pacific and the Cortez, with Punta Gorda producing some of the bigger fish, other locations were Old Lighthouse, Lands’ End, 11.50 spot and Pozo de Cota. 

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot and humid, some rain, port closed Sept 8th and 9th, seas calm to moderate. 

AVERAGE WATER TEMPERATURE: 86 F

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report August 29 - September 4, 2015

Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 86%

Numbers at a glance: Billfish 51%, Dorado 32%, Tuna 15%

BILLFISH:  The numbers of anglers visiting Cabo took a nose dive as August came to a close and kids headed back to school so only a few boats were heading out each day, which means less boats out, less fish caught.  With that said we still saw a good mix on billfish with striped marlin dominating the pack.  Our hot boat this week was the Pisces 31 ft. Bertram La Brisa, for releasing a 450 lb. blue marlin just half a mile offshore at Las Margaritas for anglers John Nguyen, Mike Babieau & Nick Back.  It was a bit unusual that this large fish took a Caballito; as a bonus to this nice catch they also caught two wahoo for the table.  A couple of days before this La Brisa had another blue marlin on the Pacific side at Pozo de Cota, not as large this time at around 200 lbs. but nevertheless a strong fish that was released in a healthy condition.  Anglers on board Elise Mesayer, Cathy Veaze, Jake Verret & Dusty Hoffpauir from New Iberia, Louisiana had their work cut out for them though as they went on to boat a hefty  130 lb. yellowfin tuna.  Hiroshi Kakamura & Wataru Nagazumi from Tokyo were out on 28 ft. Andrea when they landed a 200 lb. plus blue marlin at the Golden Gate.  Another notable catch was aboard 28 ft.  Adriana for two nice striped marlin, up to 120 lbs. and two wahoo up to 35 lbs.  The only other boat that had more than one billfish was Tracy Ann fishing at the 11.50 spot with David McDonald & friends on board; they managed to release two sailfish up to 90 lbs.  There were some hit and miss days this week but more anglers were catching fish than in previous weeks, this is attributed to a bunch of wahoo appearing and boats going for a more sure thing than perhaps searching offshore for billfish.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 12 striped marlin, 4 blue marlin and 6 sailfish this week; all but two were released.

OTHER SPECIES:  The water has really been way too hot for inshore fish but this week we were thrilled to have an influx of wahoo – which meant a lot of tackle got lost, bitten off by their sharp teeth but a lot were caught too.  Flora T had a bumper day with seven wahoo up to 30 lbs.  and a skipjack for Dan Brinker & Dennis McAndrews along with their party of six , fishing at Las Margaritas; the fish were taken feathers and cedar plugs.  Many boats were able to get a wahoo or two, which is considered the best eating fish you can find.  Other than wahoo, there were a few more dorado this week, but nothing to write home about.  The dorado were small, seldom exceeding 20 lbs. and tended to be right around the 10 lb. mark, many just too tiny to keep were released.  Catches of dorado were on the Pacific and were of one to three fish.  Tuna catches were on the slow side with just fifteen percent of our charters catching one to three fish, with the exception being the 35 ft. Bertram Valerie who had eight of them up to 40 lbs.  plus a striped marlin released 20 miles out from the Lighthouse for Jesse Celestino and friends.  Just one 70 lb. pilot shark was released aboard Listo.  The only other catches were skipjacks and then again usually just a single fish.

WEATHER CONDITIONS:  Hot, partly cloudy, a local storm that lasted around 20 minutes brought strong winds and drenching rain to Cabo San Lucas, causing the power to go out for three hours.  Seas have some swell but mostly calm.

LOCATION: Mostly Pacific, lighthouse, Pozo de Cota, Margaritas, San Cristobal, Golden Gate and 95 spot on Cortez side.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 87 F

BEST LURES: Live caballito, cedar plugs, feathers, green/blue, pink/blue.
