Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report April 9th to 15th 2016

BILLFISH:  Marlin numbers were up slightly from last week, but are still nowhere as good as we would like them to be.  We checked last years’ fish report and saw that it was pretty much the same as this year.  The weather is still pretty cold for this time of year and it has been rather windy on the Pacific side, which could be a contributing factor.  Captain Orlando out on his 28 ft. Andrea started out the week well, as he heading to the 11.50 spot and Punta Gorda with Andres Villafante and friends from Mexico on board; they were very fortunate to release two striped marlin, one a baby at 40 LBS and the other perhaps it’s daddy at 140 LBS.  They also caught and released a 90 LB pilot shark on live caballito.  This same day Bill Collector had an action packed day, fishing a little further up in the Sea of Cortez at Destiladeras with our very own Melissa Espino and friends on board.  They were able to release a striped marlin, hammerhead shark snapper and couple of triggerfish.  We were surprised to see a couple of early season sailfish, but then again water is warmer than normal. Adam Padgett released a nice 75 LB sailfish twenty five mile out from San Jose aboard Pisces Listo.  On April 11th the crew of the Tracy Ann were able to show off their marlin skills and were able to release a couple of striped marlin that were estimated at 130 & 160 LBS at the 11.50 spot from New Jersey anglers the Moore family.  Another boat that had a two marlin day was Andrea for David Mays, who got both of his fish also at the 11.50 spot on live bait.  There were plenty of boats that spotted marlin but just could not get a hook up. Pisces anglers caught a total of 19 billfish this week; all but one released.

OTHER SPECIES:  Where the marlin lacked, the smaller game took up the slack with multiple catches possible of a variety of fish in a day.  Let’s take the Andrea with the Zelms from Arizona aboard: they released a large 220 LB hammerhead shark, and caught a sheephead, 6 ladyfish, 2 grouper, 3 triggerfish and 2 pintos.  Or Tracy Ann fishing at Migrino on the Pacific for the Murray party; they caught 12 grouper, 10 babosas, 2 sheephead, 6 red snapper, 1 ladyfish, 2 mulejinos and 1 sea bass in other words a total of 35 fish on a day trip.  One of the most enviable catches was aboard Hot Rod who caught two wahoo for John Pritchard.  There were some tuna catches this week but the fish tended to be small at no more than 15 LBS and catches of up to eight fish, usually at San Jaime.  A couple of small dorado were also caught.  To summarize plentiful catches of grouper, triggerfish, ladyfish, some snappers, sierra, skipjacks, yellowtail and sharks.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 74 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, petrolero.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report March 26th to April 8th 2016

BILLFISH: Marlin have been conspicuously absent from Cabo the past couple of months with just a few caught each week and though many more were sighted, getting them on a hook was a real challenge.  Nevertheless towards the end of this report we began to see more of them and more anglers were rewarded with hooks ups and some even had multiple marlin days.  It looks like things are about to change!  Pisces Bill Collector had an outstanding day for Todd Huerkamp and Laney Dobbs from Texas, fishing of Punta Gorda, where they manage to release THREE striped marlin on live bait, in the 100 to 130 LB class.  Yahoo had given up on the day and was heading back in when they were able to hook two striped marlin just three miles off of Lands’ End for Scott and Jim from Chicago.  Andrea was the only other boat to have more than one marlin in a day, with a double header for Dane & Blake Wilson from Montana.  Our boats caught a total of twenty six marlin this week, with many others spotted but not tempted.  However, Pisces anglers caught plenty of fish this report easily adding up to over 1,000 fish, between all the different smaller species.  In a way it’s been good that the marlin have been slow, as captains have been forced to try new techniques and fish for other species, developing skills that may have rusted a bit when the marlin is so plentiful.  Some of the best catches were the mixed bag days that was perfect for families fishing over Easter as everybody on board got to catch something.  A group visiting from New Jersey, fishing aboard Bill Collector and managed to release a striped marlin as well as a 150 LB pilot shark for the group headed up by Don Michael.  Lake Schiefelbein and family had a great time on Ruthless released a striped marlin at Migrino then caught eight groupers, six ladyfish and a yellow tail.  The Staver family from Chicago must have been tired after their outing on Valerie with a 160 LB striped marlin released as well as twenty one triggerfish, two groupers and a roosterfish to boot.

OTHER SPECIES:  Eighty percent of our charters caught small game fish this week, though a few boats did get “skunked”, mainly those that opted for a half day.  Those that took the full day had a bonanza on triggerfish – fun on ultra-light tackle- roosterfish, snappers, lady fish, Barbosas (slimeys), jack crevalle, sheephead, skipjacks, jack crevalle, sierra and various types and sizes of grouper.  One of our pangas released a 150 LB hammerhead shark for Tom Kledzinski from Chicago, who also caught three skipjacks. Twenty eight foot Andrea had a busy day with anglers from Reno, Nevada on board, with a pilot shark released, fifteen ladyfish, three babosas and a grouper.  Pisces Tiburon (which means shark) aptly released a large hammerhead shark for Mark Shmiedl from Ohio as well as good numbers of trigger and lady fish.  The Saline’s and Bienkowskis from California fished together on Andrea and released a 100 LB thresher shark, eleven ladyfish, a grouper, yellowtail, ten triggerfish and two babosas.  Tracy Ann had a nice day catching eight groupers, two of the unusual and beautiful sheephead, plus trigger and ladyfish.  Yellowfin tuna catches were slow with just five percent of boats finding  this species.  Bill Collector was able to catch fourteen up to 25 LBs at San Jaime for Sam Sheriden and friends from Canada.  The Richter party from Fayetteville, North Carolina were out with the crew on Knot Workin’ who are tuna aficionados – they got the anglers into the tuna and managed to land eight up to 40 LBS.  Pisces Adriana caught a really nice 56 LB grouper for the Stephenson’s from Colorado who also caught another grouper, two sheephead, three red snapper, eight ladyfish and a couple of triggerfish. 

WEATHER: Quite windy and overcast some days on Pacific, now clear and flat. Calmer seas on the Cortez.
LOCATION: Pacific for smaller game and tuna, Migrino, Margaritas, San Jaime, marlin starting to show up on Cortez side between Santa Maria and Punta Gorda.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report December 19 - 24, 2015

BILLFISH: This week saw steady catches of striped marlin for a little more than half of the boats, with a few sudden spikes of multiple catches per single boat.  Weather has been colder and windier, which meant boats couldn’t always fish the Pacific where more marlin were believed to be.  One of the top catches in a single day goes to Pisces Yahoo for six stripers up to 140 LBS at Pozo de Cota for the Hattners from Keller, Texas on December 20th; they also caught two dorado.  Tracy Ann had the only sailfish of the week, a big one, estimated at 110 LBS, plus two striped marlin released for Swedish anglers Ola Eklund, Peter Mucander and Johan Ingenmanusson; all three fish took live caballito at the Herradura.  Next day out it was Greg & Jack Sullivan who had the best day, this time aboard La Brisa as they released four striped marlin up to 120 LBS at Los Arcos.  They also managed to land two dorado for the dinner table.  It’s no wonder Tracy Ann won top marlin boat for Pisces this year; they seem to have a knack for it and proved it by releasing six marlin up to 100 LBS on December 21st for McCullough family from Fayetteville, Georgia – well done!  One of the most enviable days was aboard Flora T for a group from Dallas headed up by Darrell Overcash – they released three striped marlin and caught six dorado and two wahoo, fishing at Los Arcos. The marlin were spread out this week, with no one set location.  Boats started out fishing on the Cortez side then moved up the Pacific as far as Golden Gate.  Fifty one percent of our charters caught between one and six marlin giving us a total catch of 61 billfish.

 

 

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches were steady for most boats and could be caught over a wide area. When found, catches ranged from one to nine fish in the 15 to 25 LB class.  Pisces Valerie had an active day on dorado on the Pacific at Migrino where they caught nine dorado on a combination of ballyhoo and ballyhoo for Brad Lassila and family from Colorado.  Adriana, one of our 28 ft. boats, had some good dorado action too, with eight caught up to 25 LBS at Los Arcos and Margaritas for a group of anglers from Kansas.  Fifty three percent of our anglers caught dorado this week giving us a total catch of 129 fish.  Tuna catches were very slow this week with just a few boats even finding them.  The exception was Bill Collector who headed to Jaime Bank on the Pacific and managed to land fifteen up to 20 LBS for Ross Benson and Steve Buckley and friends from New Jersey and Massachusetts respectively.  Several boats caught wahoo this week but they are by no means plentiful and tended to be small at 15 to 20 LBS.  There was not much inshore action except for an odd triggerfish, rooster or sierra.

LOCATION: 95 spot on the Cortez side, then Los Arcos, Pedregal, Migrino, Margaritas and Golden Gate.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Windy and on the cold side, mostly overcast, seas moderate to choppy.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 77 F

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Dec 12 - 18, 2015

BILLFISH: Ho, ho ho!, it feels like Christmas time in Cabo and it looks the billfish have spread out between the steady Pacific side and some parts of Cabo, more specifically between Chileno and Cabo del Sol this week.  “Valerie” Pisces 35ft had a nice day reeling in a Striped Marlin estimated at 180 lbs., one dorado and a small tuna for Peter Karras, Carlos Goncalves and Jomar Labuschagne, visiting Cabo for the first time, coming from Portugal and South Africa!  Pisces “Cabolero” 31ft released a striped Marlin in San Jaime Bank for Jesse & Julie Prather, Mike Summers and Tim Burgarner from Caldwell, Idaho. “Poseidon” Pisces 25ft panga is not a big boat, but nevertheless kept lines busy with a Striped Marlin and four dorado up to 20lbs. for Elbert and Betty Bivins from Jackson, at the Cerros de Arena, on the Pacific side.  Pisces “Tiburon” 31ft also had a great day for a group of Swedish angling friends: Bernt Olson, Nicholas Lund, Sten Gumar and Kjell Kironvall who fought two Striped Marlins and a Sailfish in the same area. “Ruthless” 31ft Bertram headed to La Ballena, over on the Pacific and released a Striped Marlin and two dorados for Kurtis, Shayne and Tyler Millhollin visiting from beautiful Santa Barbara, Ca. “Speedwell” 38ft Pisces reeled two Striped Marlin and three dorados in San Cristobal and Pozo  Cota for Mike, Anna, Tom and Kevin Cole from Sacramento, Ca. good job Captain Piranha!  “Rebecca” Pisces 31ft reeled a Blue Marlin 200 lbs. estimated weight, the crew used a “flying” lure (volador) at the 11.50 spot for more Swedish anglers: Ola Eklund, Johan Ingenmansson and Peter Mucander, good job!  Another Blue and Striped Marlin released aboard “Bill Collector” 32ft Pisces, estimated weight 200 lbs. the crew used the volador lure as well for Frank, Neil an Nancy Muller visiting  from Woodland, California.  On December 17th the “Adriana" and the “Andrea” 28ft ´s Pisces boats did a back to back releasing  two striped marlin outside of the Cerro, for Brian, David, Joselyn & Matt Berry from Grant Bay, Ca. and Brian & Mitchell Sussman from Los Angeles, Ca. respectively.  Finally on December 18th the “Yahoo” 42ft Bertram released two Striped Marlin between 120-130 lbs. outside of the Cerro  for Charlene and John Hattner de Keller, Texas and Jonathan Beyeler from Broadway, Va.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 64 Billfish this week with most successfully released consisting of 58 Striped Marlin, 3 Sailfish and 3 Blue Marlin.

 

 

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado still being quite steady, ranging sizes from 10 to 30 lbs. “Adriana” 28ft Pisces got four dorados  at Migriño for Jeff & Sam Smith from Corpus Christy and Othis Johnson from Houston, Texas.  “Valerie” 35ft Pisces got three dorados with live bait in Pozo Cota for Kathy Sherman from Cheyenne, Wyoming and Linda & Burt Black from Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Captain Ray & Fernando aboard “La Brisa” 31ft Pisces reeled four mahi-mahi estimated 15-30 lbs., at el Cerro del Golden for John Summer group visiting from Camden, Delaware.  “Shambala” 60ft vessel caught five dorados in Margaritas for Alan & Austin Jenkins, Carter Powell & Francis Straw from Sacramento, Ca. and the “Andrea” 28ft Pisces brought six dorados at La Ballena for Jeremy & John Highfill from Fairbanks, Alaska.  Panga “Poseidon” did reel a 35lbs wahoo in front of Cabo del Sol for Jeff Smith group and the “Adriana” 28ft Pisces brought another wahoo 20lbs. at Migriño.  Pangas has been quite successful for Marlin, wahoo and tunas; Panga 23ft “Jessica” Pisces got for the Bivins group six yellow fin tunas, football sizes and really good for lunch. Pisces clients got a total of 81 dorados, 14 tunas and 4 wahoos, representing the 43% for dorado  and the 12% for the Other species.

LOCATION: Pacific side: Pozo Cota, Los Arcos, La Ballena, Old light house, Cerro Golden, Margaritas. Sea of Cortes: Between Cabeza de Ballena, Cabo del Sol.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Cooler nights and mornings, sunny and hardly any wind, it feels like Christmas time!.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: Water: 78- 74F, Air: 68- 72F

BEST LURES: Live bait: caballito. Lures: Volador, tigrillo, rojo negro, verde negro.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report Nov 20-27, 2015

BILLFISH: Another great week for late season blue marlin catches in Cabo!  We are not used to seeing all these blues so late in the year and surely this is the result of the “El Niño” current which has brought consistent warm water throughout the year and therefore steady, good catches.  Let's start with the Pisces 28ft “Adriana” who released a blue marlin estimated at 200 lbs. outside of la Herradura for Ulf Cristiansson and Lennart Arrenius visiting from Sweden. Pisces 38ft “C Rod” released another 200 lb. blue outside of el Cerro for William Gluckman and Sonia Schaeffer from New Jersey along with one Dorado and two yellow fin tuna. Pisces “Andrea” headed up to the San Jaime Bank and released yet another blue marlin for Allyson, Sean, Chris and Lizzie Park from Nashville, Texas. “Bill Collector” our 32 ft. Cabo, worked really hard and got a 350 lbs. blue marlin, forty miles out from Land’s End for Richard & Grey Simoncic and Joseph Zucarello from Paradise, Az.  To round up the blue marlin catches Pisces 55 ft. “Flora T” released 250 lbs. blue some way up the Pacific coast at Migriño, for Wade & Forrest Threadgill from Austin, TX.  Pisces “Speedwell” a 38 ft. Mediterranean released one Striped Marlin, one sailfish and one dorado for Jason Allen, Brian Van Holland and Narciso Flores from Laguna Hills, Ca. at La Antena close to Migriño.  Brian Dodd and friends from Colorado and Montana fished aboard 31ft Pisces “Tiburon” and were really pleased releasing their first Striped Marlin!  “Cabolero” released two Striped marlin and one dorado at the Old light house for John Thompson & Diana Goettle from Helena, Montana. Pisces 31ft “Rebecca” and 31ft “Tracy Ann” with our good friends Anders Lundgren of Sweden released two Striped Marlin, one Sailfish at the 95 Spot and two Striped Marlin at the 11.50 spot during their last trip of this year”.   Pisces “Ruthless” did well too with one striped marlin released and ten dorados at Elias Gaspareño for Ken & Elizabeth Kerr, Kevin and Laura Atamamuk from San Clemente. Pisces “Valerie” released two Striped Marlin and boated two dorados, two sierras and released two rooster fish at the Golden Gate for Susan, Eddie and Katie Janecheck from Costa Mesa & Sacramento, Ca.  Panga Poseidon released a striped marlin at the Old Lighthouse for Mike & Erin Elgru from South Carolina.  Eighty five percent of Pisces Anglers released a total of 79 billfish, consisting in 69 Striped Marlin, 5 Blue and 5 sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado fishing was hot this week, with seventy of our clients catching a total of 341 dorado, ranging from 10 to 25 lbs. Tuna catches were on the slow side with just nine percent of our anglers bringing in a total of 35 yellow fin tuna, ranging in size from 10 to 15 lbs.  Four of our vessels brought in wahoo, whilst others caught rooster fish, needlefish and sierras which are excellent for making ceviche.  Pisces “Bill Collector” brought in eight dorados , with one released at La Ballena, on the Pacific side for the Stein Family visiting from Miami, Fl.  Pisces Shambala a  60 ft. Hatteras, caught five dorados at Elias Calles for Manuel Araujo and Stephanie & Matthew Mason from Houston, TX.  On November 25th the majority of boats had a great day for dorado fishing, such as Pisces “Tiburon”, “Ruthless”, “Tracy Ann” over at the Golden Gate. Pisces “Andrea” caught six tunas for Paul Smith and Tom Dufell from United Kingdom at San Jaime.  

LOCATION: Pacific Side -Golden Gate, La Ballena, San Jaime, El Faro, Elías Calles, Pescadero. Sea of Cortes: 11.50, 95 spot. 

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Rain on a couple of days which cause the port to be closed for two days due to tropical storm Sandra. Cool, nice, overcast, cloudy a little choppy. The outlook is for excellent fishing.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 82F- 85FT

BEST LURES: live bait, green, pink, red/black, blue/white.

Shark Bitten Tuna! Shark Bitten Tuna!

Long time Pisces angler Rick Walsh from Cleveland was out aboard Pisces Valerie about 30 miles out from Land's End trolling a small blue and white Hoochi (squid lure) when it was slammed by a large tuna.  Rick went to work reeling hard, knowing he was in for a long fight it the fish managed to get its head turned away, even though it was down deep.  After about 20 minutes of muscle tiring work, the crew and angler knew something had changed, the line went slack.  Then they spotted coming up from the depths four of five pilot sharks that were attacking the fish as they reeled it towards the boat, now as a dead weight - the guys wanted this fish and they did not plan on sharing their hard work with freeloaders.  Captain Roberto quickly put the boat into reverse to scare the sharks off and they successfully got it on board, albeit missing a few pounds.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report September 12 - 18, 2015

BILLFISH:  Fishing was outstanding this week in Los Cabo with plenty of action for anglers; the result showing in a ninety six percent success rate overall with a generous portion of that number attributed to billfish.  The week started out on a good note with Tracy Ann catching and releasing three striped marlin and a sailfish, between the 95 and 11.50 spots for Jeremy Ross & friends from Lufkin, Texas.  The fish took a combination of bait and lures.  Our first blue marlin of the week was brought to the boat, after a two hour fight, by Ben Jones from Austin, Texas aboard Adriana.  The fish was estimated at 200 LBS & hit a green & yellow lure ten miles out from Land’s End, before being safely released.  September 14th saw incredible action for fishermen, as Bill Collector released a 350 LB blue marlin outside the 95 spot, also on a green lure for Robert & Sara Wallace, from Texas who were fishing with Chrism & Kimberly Cain & Matthew & Shelby Baugh. This same day Tracy Ann headed 30 miles out & ended up releasing FIVE sailfish & boating ten tuna for Dave Smith & friends, also from Texas.  Valerie released a 200 LB blue at the 95 spot on a live caballito for Andrew Scoggin from Memphis, Tennessee.  La Brisa also managed a blue marlin this day for Nigel Ashurst & party who also boated a 110 LB tuna.  Jay & Paige Pegel - father and daughter from Fountain, Colorado had their hands full on September 16th aboard 28 ft. Adriana as they released FIVE striped marlin & a pilot shark as well as boating six tuna – now that’s a lot of fish!  Andrea, C Rod & Knot Workin also had blue marlin released in the 180 to 250 LB category.  Hot Rod, the latest addition to Pisces had a fun day on September 18th for Gary Stricker & friends as they released two striped marlin, two sailfish & boated four tuna.  Other notable catches this same day were aboard 31ft Bertram Tiburon where two blue marlin were released forty miles out for Darwin Zavadil & Weston Smith & Tracy Ann, also a 31 ft. Bertram for three sailfish, two striped marlin & three tuna for Dave Smith, who fished several days. Pisces anglers caught a total of 82 billfish this week consisting of 39 striped marlin, 33 sailfish & 10 blue marlin.  The marlin & sailfish action was the surest catch this week.

OTHER SPECIES:  Tuna catches took off in a great way but we don’t know how long this will last as we have spotted huge commercial tuna boats in the area which may have a negative impact.  Even though anglers love to catch this challenging species we have to keep in mind that tuna is not classified as a sportsfish but rather is viewed as a commercial resource by the Mexican government.  Knot Workin started us off with a couple of nice tuna at 130 and 150 LBS each (bigger than a lot of the marlin caught), with one caught on a kite & the other on a yellow lure by David Kroczak & party.  La Brisa also had a sizeable tuna with a 158 LB fish for Tim Carson from Puyallup, WA. Nobody could top Dave Smith’s huge 249 LB & 167 LB tunas caught on Tracy Ann 35 miles out – oh & they released a sailfish too.  Tuna catches ranged from one to twenty fish, with sizes ranging from 5 LB (released) to the big fish mentioned above, with catches predominantly on the Pacific side.  Just a couple of dorado were caught this week, which makes us wonder if commercial boats are making a dent in their stocks.  Seventeen percent of our catches were made up of skipjacks, triggerfish, bonitas, grouper, amberjack & a single wahoo. 

LOCATION: San Jaime, 95 spot, 11.50 spot, 10-30 miles out from Lands’ End, Herradura, 20 to 40 miles out from the Old Lighthouse.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot & humid, some scattered heavy rain showers, seas moderate to calm.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 86 F

BEST LURES: Live caballito for sailfish, bait & assorted lures for marlin, cedar plugs for small tuna & assorted lures for large tuna.

BILLFISH:  One of the best weeks of the year for billfish, even though the port was closed for two days due to the proximity of Hurricane Linda.  The biggest fish we’ve seen so far this year was landed off of San Jose aboard a 22 ft. panga Viviana I on September 11th by local angler Carlos Cota Lucero.  The huge black marlin weighed in at 765 lbs. and took just two and a half hours to boat.  The next day this same location produced another black marlin, caught aboard Alexandriana with Captain Antonio Guluarte; this fish was 436 lbs. and took a Chiwilie lure at the Inner Gordo Bank – thanks to Erick from La Playita for passing us the news on these two admirable fish.  Early on in the week we had some smaller blue marlin, such as one landed aboard Contessa 85 feet out on a pleasure cruise; the fish was estimated at a little over 100 lbs. and was caught by the Valbh family from Florida just one mile out for the arch.  This same day Australian angler Brett Hewerdine and friends fished aboard 55 ft. Flora T and were thrilled to release a 250 lb. blue marlin they caught at Punta Gorda on a petrolero lure, as well as a wahoo, dorado and skipjack.  On September 7th Bill Collector did really well to release a blue marlin and two sailfish at the 11.50 spot for Jennifer Hill & Stephen Kelly from Texas.  This same day fellow Texan Clint Herbst and friends were out on Listo but on the Pacific side, 32 miles out form the Old Lighthouse, where they released two sailfish, a striped marlin and boated three tuna up to 120 lbs.  Tracy Ann fished in close this day at 4 miles and released a 250 lb. blue marlin for Arkansas anglers Craig and Donna Wing.  Most anglers shut out by the rain on the 8th & 9th shut out by the rain, were able to reschedule which was a good thing, as fishing seemed to get even better.  Tracy Ann picked the pace right up after two day in port and scored two striped marlin and two sailfish for Thomas & Rebecca Hobb from Pikeville, Kentucky on September 10th at the 95 spot.  To close out the week Cabolero had an outstanding catch of five sailfish and a striped marlin nine miles out from Lands’ End by Aaron & Charles Earnhardt from Tennessee.  Not far behind, it was again Tracy Ann  with three sailfish and striped marlin released at the 11.50 spot for Jeff Anderson fishing with Jeremy & Amy Ross, all on live bait, this same day.  Billfish were the most common catch this week, with seventy nine percent of our charters catching big game species.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 54 billfish consisting of 18 striped marlin, 32 sailfish and 4 blue marlin. 

OTHER SPECIES:  This week we did see an improvement on smaller game with twenty one percent of boats landing dorado, however, catches were seldom more than one or two fish and usually no bigger than 15 lbs.  Tuna catches were a bit slower at fifteen percent but some of the fish did have some size to them at the 100 lb. plus mark.  We also know of a 300 lb. plus tuna caught aboard Fourplay out of La Playita.  Wahoo were a blessing this week with catches of this tasty fish quite steady with catches of up to three fish per boat as large as 50 lbs. Inshore triggerfish, grouper and skipjacks were caught.  One of the pangas we sent, Tres Amigos, did exceptionally well to release a sailfish and a hammerhead shark and catch eight tuna up to 20 lbs. for William Morris & Frank Brown from Texas.  

LOCATION: Boats fished both sides the Pacific and the Cortez, with Punta Gorda producing some of the bigger fish, other locations were Old Lighthouse, Lands’ End, 11.50 spot and Pozo de Cota. 

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot and humid, some rain, port closed Sept 8th and 9th, seas calm to moderate. 

AVERAGE WATER TEMPERATURE: 86 F 

BEST LURES: Live bait, petrolero, chilwillie, green colors.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report August 22nd to August 28th 2015

BILLFISH:  Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin and Sailfish are here! We are just a week away from our hot September!, that means humidity and hard core fishermen  focusing on one thing: Big game and upcoming Tournament Season.   Pisces Ruthless is on fire!  Two striped marlin up to  160 lb., one sailfish estimated at 80 lb., one dorado close to 25 lbs at  Pozo de Cota and Los Arcos, on the Pacific side gave an outstanding day to the Todd Schafer group visiting from California, all billfish successfully released!  Andrea our 28 ft Uniflite managed to released a 190 lb. Blue Marlin and a good sized Sailfish at Punta Gorda with the Ferreiro group from New Jersey.  Listo  released a Striped Marlin and a Sailfish at the 95 Spot in the Sea of Cortes with the Bryan Keene Group from New Mexico and Oregon, good job!  On August 23rd Pisces Rebecca hooked up an 185 lb. Blue Marlin for the Wilson-Lundquist  & Taquino-Hendrix Group from San Francisco, California.  Mr. Phong  Vuong and friends from Houston, Texas celebrated his 50th birthday  aboard the 42ft Pisces Yahoo and his favorite  boat , 38ft CRod where he released a 60 lb. baby Striped Marlin and reeled in some good size tunas up to 40 lbs. on the Pacific side, Happy Birthday again! Pisces Rebecca released a Sailfish on August 24th from Brian Reynolds visiting from Boise, Idaho.

August 25th Pisces Tracy Ann gave the fight with two Sailfish to Hailey group visiting as well from Hauser, Idaho. 31ft Pisces Tiburon over Punta Gorda released Striped marlin around 120 lb. for Brian Bowen and group from Saginaw, Texas.  Also 31ft Rebecca got a busy day for Alan and Sandra Younger with two striped marlin one sailfish and a pilot shark.  Ruthless did it again with a 350 lb. Blue Marlin outside of Punta Gorda, with Jason Charo, Jeff Dewease and Tom Sands from Houston, Texas.  Another Blue Marlin for Mahmood Somani visiting from London released aboard the 42ft Yahoo!;  32ft Pisces Bill Collector fought another Blue Marlin of 200 lb. outside of la Herradura, Sea of Cortes with David-Winfrey Group from New York, Georgia and Texas.  On August 27th 35ft Listo released one good size Sailfish 130 lb. in San Jaime for David and Messie Almasy from California.  The last day of our week, we had lots of action for billfish: Pisces 28ft Adriana, released Striped Marlin in Cerro de Arena and two yellow fin tunas (20 lb.)  for Reeves-Snuffer group from West Virginia; Andrea and Tracy Ann released Striped marlin and yellow fin tunas in Los Arcos  for Rob Kellog from Texas and Adam Shrout from Los Angeles, California. 31ft  La Brisa and  Ruthless got hooked on Sailfish one over Punta Gorda for Cristina and Craig Downer from Kalamazoo, Mi. and the second over San Jaime for Dewease Group visiting from Houston, Texas.  Our  46ft Attitude Adjustment behaved releasing a Blue Marlin estimated 200 lb. for the Ginilli Group from San Francisco, Ca.  Pisces anglers released a total of 44 billfish this week, consisting of 24 Striped Marlin, 14 Sailfish and 6 Blue Marlin.

OTHER SPECIES:  Tuna, tuna, tuna good sizes!  Starting on August 22nd with Pisces Knot Working with 30 lb. tunas over San Jaime for the Keene Group from Arizona and New Mexico;  August 23rd the 28ft Andrea got a 40 pounder in the same area for Powell-Cooper-Wolcott from Roseburg, Oregon;  28ft Andrea fought two yellow fin tunas ranging from 20 to 45 lbs. in Cabrillo, Sea of Cortes for Ferreiro family visiting from New York.  On August 25th Knot Working again gave a fought to 40 minutes and lost a 150 lbs. tuna over the Pedregal area.  31ft Cabolero got a 40 lb. in Cerro de Arena, for Jack Hunter Group from Strongville, Ohio.  And 24ft panga Poseidon got two tunas from 30 to 50 lb. for Cody Wood from Alpine, Texas. Two Wahoo were spotted this week, one 35 lb. aboard the Pisces Listo and one 25 lb.  on Rebecca, over the 95 and San Jaime area.  We got some action for Mahi- Mahi as well ranging from 10 lb. to 25 lb. aboard Pisces Andrea & Ruthless over Pozo Cota, Cabeza de Ballena & 95 Spot. Panga Poseidon caught two as well!  We also saw some Sharks!  Yes, sharks! Three Sardine sharks over 100 lb. and one Pilot shark  75 lb. with La Brisa and Rebecca all of them over Punta Gorda.  For inshore besides the great tuna and dorado in pangas we saw lots of skipjacks and pierna fish which is great for lunch.  We had a total of 36 big game species this week, 24 yellow fin tunas, 10 Mahi Mahi, 4 sharks and bunch of skipjacks.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report July 11 - 17, 2015

BILLFISH:  This week we have a much shorter report than normal as the port was closed for three days due to the proximity of hurricane Dolores.  The storm caused no ill effects in Cabo except for big surf and a smattering or rain but as a precaution the boats were told to stay in, leaving many anglers frustrated as they didn’t get to fish.  The fishing was exactly as it should be at this time of year, with a bit of a drop on striped marlin and an increase on blue marlin and sailfish.  We had several blue marlin this week; David Gonzalez from Houston, got a nice fish on Speedwell as did the Bowen family from Emmett Idaho, who caught a blue marlin estimated at 160 lbs. at the 95 spot aboard Rebecca.  July 13th saw 28 ft. Andrea catch a 300 lb. blue marlin at the Herradura on an orange and black lure for Claude & Kathy Callahan from Virginia.  This same day Tracy Ann had a smaller blue in the same area for Houston anglers, the Villarreal family.  Surprise of the week was for Cody Jeffcott from North Carolina, who had rented a panga by himself; he was shocked to catch a 360 lb. blue marlin just five miles off of Lands’ End as well as four tuna and two dorado. Buddies Jaxon Bates and Brad Jacobs from Boise, Idaho & Snohomish, WA, respectively were thrilled with the fishing and service they received aboard Tracy Ann where they were able to release a striped marlin each in the 120 lb. class on July 14th.  The majority of the fishing was on the Pacific side this week with a good success rate, though there were some boats “skunked” mostly those who opted for half days.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 27 billfish this week consisting of 17 striped marlin, 5 sailfish & 5 blue marlin.

OTHER SPECIES:  It was nice to see the dorado starting to appear this week – right on time for the Dorado Shoot Out at Los Barriles and another dorado tournament out of Cabo San Lucas.  The fish however tended to be on the small side, though some medium size fish were caught, such as a 25 lb. fish on Rebecca who had a total of ten ranging in weight from 10 lbs. upwards to the largest mentioned here.  Some of the dorado were as small as 3 or 4 lbs. and were released. Our total dorado catch was of 68 fish with some boats catching as many as fourteen in a day.  Tuna catches were of small school size fish with catches of between one and thirteen fish for thirty seven percent of our charters.  No real size to any of the tuna this week in the Cabo area, though we did hear of a 300 lb. plus tuna out of San Jose.  With the big surf inshore fishing was not great but we did catch triggerfish, skipjacks and needle fish.  A few wahoo were caught whilst trolling but none over 40 lbs.

LOCATION: Herradura, San Jaime, Pozo Cota, Old Lighthouse 3-10 miles out, Migrino, Golden Gate.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Port closed three days, big waves, partly cloudy skies, seas now flat.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 83-86 F

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report June 27 to July 3, 2015

Brian, Chris, Ed, Scott and Tom from Florida and Georgia were the lucky anglers aboard our 31 ft Cabolero, who caught (and released) 2 striped marlins, 6 dorados and 2 yellowin tunas, all in one fishing trip. 

 

BILLFISH: Wow what an incredible week; fishing was hot with multiple catches of blue & striped marlin as well as sailfish.  The week culminated in the Stars and Stripes tournament, a fun, well run event, which raised over two million dollars for charity. One of our top boats was Pisces Listo which on June 27th released ten striped marlin & a 300 lb. blue marlin for team SoCal anglers during the Stars & Stripes event.  Samantha Everhardt from Texas released a 320 lb. blue marlin, which took her just an hour and 15 minutes to subdue, whilst her companion Kyle, released a striped marlin  around 120 lbs.; both fish were caught at Destiladeras aboard Pisces Rebecca.  Blue marlin are a definite goal for anglers that have been fishing Cabo for years and have released striped marlin, but these bigger fish are more elusive and fewer and farther between, this week though we had first time anglers as well as repeat clients that were able to get a blue.  Jen, Brad & Mark Hoffman from Gainesville, Florida had a blue marlin that took them four hours to fight to the boat before releasing the approximately 300 lb. fish – they also released a striped marlin aboard Pisces Andrea.  Rick Walsh, long time Pisces angler was able to release a blue marlin close to 250 lbs. aboard Rebecca also at Destiladeras.  Ruthless, Speedwell & Cabolero each released a blue marlin in the 200 to 250 lb. class on July 2nd with lures of various colors the trick to getting a hook up.   Deddi & Eddie West from North Carolina were some of the only anglers that went to the Pacific side; Captain Julio guided them to San Jaime aboard Tracy Ann where they released six striped marlin & boated a wahoo.  La Brisa had a super busy day Tom Ginn & friends on June 29th, they took up a huge space on our fish report with three striped marlin, a sailfish, two pilot sharks, two yellowfin tuna and four skipjacks.  Remember the hotter the weather the hotter the fishing.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 71 billfish, consisting of 54 striped marlin, 8 blue marlin and 9 sailfish released.

OTHER SPECIES:  There were some good yellowfin tuna catches with some boats able to catch up to 24 in a day, mostly of school size but there were also some sizeable ones, such as 155 lb’er caught aboard Shambala by Tampa, Florida anglers who also released two striped marlin.  This same day Bill Collector landed a 147 lb. tuna for Mark Chiavetta, the largest of fourteen caught by this group, as well a striped marlin release.  The pilot sharks don’t seem to want to leave as they are still mixed in with the striped marlin and we had ten released this week.  Dorado catches were on the slow side with just a few caught here and there.  We did have some nice roosterfish, such as a 45 lb. fish caught aboard Pisces Valerie; these anglers lucked out as they also caught seven dorado and eleven skipjack.  Jack crevalle, amberjack & skipjacks rounded out the rest of the catches.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report June 13 - 19, 2015

BILLFISH:  Cabo San Lucas experienced great fishing again this week with striped marlin remaining steady and more sailfish starting to appear.  As well as billfish we are starting to see more table fish showing up, with dorado starting to put in an appearance as well as some nice tuna and a bunch of inshore fish.  The honeymoon with the 11.50 seems to be over for the time being as the fish moved on to other locations.  With the concentration broken up boats were able to manage catches of one to four marlin per day, when not heading out in search of tuna.   Pisces Listo released four stripers up to 140 lbs. off of Lands’ End for the Moore family from Colorado Springs – the fish a took a combination of live bait and lures.  This same day, June 17th, Pisces C Rod also released four marlin between Lands’ End and the lighthouse, all on caballito for a group from Brea, California.  The fish were spread out from Land’s End to Palmilla and on some days were closer to Chileno.  A few sailfish were picked up with the marlin and averaged 70 lbs.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 99 billfish this week with all but two released – 96 striped marlin and 3 sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES:  This week was a virtual bonanza with wahoo, tuna, dorado, sharks, jack crevalle, triggerfish, bonita, roosterfish, needlefish, grouper, snapper and amberjack caught.  What anglers were most excited about were the tuna, with some huge fish being caught well over 100 lbs., whilst others caught school size fish in the 15 to 25 lb. class.  Some of the better catches of tuna were out of the 180 spot and Destiladeras, which is up past San Jose.  Brett, Brianne, Tyler & Briley Bradford, from Texas had a great day aboard Rebecca landing dorado and a tuna that nudged in over 100 lbs.  Only twelve percent of our boats targeted tuna but they managed to catch a total of 42 fish.  Dorado catches were a little slower, but this won’t be for long, as the summer progresses their numbers should climb.  It was nice to see some wahoo of a good size in the 40 to 50 lb. class.  Doneene Loar from Treasure Island, Florida landed a beautiful 51 lb. specimen aboard Pisces Andrea as well as a dorado.  Sharks remain in the area, mostly pilot sharks in the 70 to 80 lb. class, as well as one black tip – all were released.  Michael Sandman from Ellenberg, Washington caught a very nice roosterfish, estimated at 50 lbs., as well two huge sierras one was reported to be 18 lbs., which if they had verified would have equaled the all tackle world record set in Ecuador in 1990.  Lots of jack crevalle this week with boats catching a marlin or two then fishing or jacks closer in with catches of up to seven fish in a day.  Many boats had fantastic mixed days, such as Flora T with two striped marlin released, a 40 lb. wahoo and three jack crevalle for a group from Dallas.  Another example would be C Rod with two marlin released, a pilot shark released, one tuna and three jack crevalle.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Windy on the Pacific, sunny but breezy, seas mostly calm on the Cortez side with wind in the afternoons.

LOCATION: Pacific for roosterfish, needlefish  & other small game, near the lighthouse, other species at Cabeza de Ballena, Lands’ End, Cabo Real, Palmilla.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 77-80 F

BEST LURES: Live caballito, orange/black, black/green, green/yellow.

BILLFISH:  With hurricane Blanca close to Cabo last week, the Port Captain closed the harbor to all navigation for three days as a precaution, so numbers are lower this week, due to the fact that simply less boats went fishing.  The water was a bit different after the storm in that it was quite green, but did not have much debris, as rains were not heavy.  It’s generally true that after a storm it takes a couple of days for fishing to settle down as the crews have to relocate the fish, currents and water temperatures and this was the case this past week, where for the first few days after the port was opened, quite a few boats were “skunked”.  On the other hand we had some nice catches of blue marlin, which are a little early this year due to hotter than normal weather.  The largest blue for us was caught aboard 38 ft. Pisces Speedwell  estimated at 350 lbs. caught the 11.50 spot by James & Sally Sullivan from San Antonio, Texas  on a guacamaya lure;  they also released a striped marlin estimated at 120 lbs.  On June 9th Pisces La Brisa fished the same location and released a 250 lb. blue marlin which took a live caballito as well as a striped marlin for the Burnell family from Lafayette, Louisiana.  This same day Pisces Rebecca had an exceptional day for Frank & Ulrike Hevener from Pennsylvania, with a blue marlin a little under 200 lbs. and three striped marlin; all were caught at the 11.50 on live bait.  The Panga Poseidon fought a 250 lb. blue marlin six miles out from Chileno before eventually losing it.  They weren’t the only losers; Pisces C Rod released a pilot shark for Thomas Hathaway and then spotted a swordfish which they successfully hooked up on live bait at the 95 spot.  The fish was a good size between 250 and 300 lbs. and very tough on 50 lb. test.  They reeled away for hours, until the anglers were exhausted and handed the tackle over to the crew, who also pumped away at the rod until they had it almost to the boat, where it broke off after the six hour fight.  We did hear of another swordfish the same day, making it back to port around 150 lbs. on another boat – the green water always seems to draw them in.   Striped marlin action was good this week with catches of one to three marlin common per boat.  Our hottest boat was Pisces Cabolero with six released on June 10th for David Clarke and friends from Anderson, South Carolina. The fish ranged from 90 to 130 lbs. and took live bait at the 11.50 spot.  June 11th, saw Pisces Tracy Ann & Rebecca, both 31 ft. Bertram’s, have almost identical catches, as they each released four striped marlin and a pilot shark each.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 63 striped marlin, 3 blue marlin and 1 sailfish this week – only two fish were kept.

OTHER SPECIES:  Most of the action other than marlin this week for Pisces Sportfishing boats concentrated on smaller game aboard pangas, where we saw good numbers of roosterfish, fair amounts of grouper, jack crevalle and the odd snapper and triggerfish.  Pilot sharks are still around and found amongst the marlin but not in the same numbers as previous weeks and are now a little smaller in the 60-70 lb. class.  We only had a couple of small dorado and tuna but know that some other boats did find some big tunas in the 50 to 150 lb. class.

LOCATION:  11.50 and 95 spots.
WEATHER:  Stormy weather with winds up to 70 mph on the Pacific and some rain, followed by bumpy seas for a couple of days, then calm.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report May 29 - June 5

BILLFISH:  Even with a full moon this week, billfish catches were very good. The striped marlin are still present in good numbers with the 11.50 spot still holding as the top location.  As the week progressed the weather became very muggy as a depression formed below us that turned into Hurricane Blanca – not all bad, that kind of weather, when it gets really hot, produces blue marlin and we had two this week.  Speedwell had anglers Dave Thelen, Scott Wolf & Emily West on board when they hooked blue marlin on a guacamaya lure that was estimated at 230 lbs.  - they also caught a 20 lb. dorado.  On the last day of this report Valerie  had anglers from Alberta, Canada n board, headed up by Daniel Loeb – their fish also took a lure, but a yellow and green one and was estimated at 250 lbs.  The striped marlin stuck to live bait and Yahoo was fortunate to release five marlin up to 150 lbs. just below the 11.50 spot for Carey & Richard Kernion and friends.  This same day, June 1st, Tracy Ann was not far behind with four marlin in the same class for the Ross family from Lufkin, Texas.  There were plenty of other catches of one to three fish per boat per day and even a sailfish.  Marlin were by far the most abundant species this week accounting for sixty nine percent of the catch.  Pisces anglers caught a total of 73 billfish consisting of 70 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin and 1 sailfish – 98% were released.

OTHER SPECIES:  Over a decade ago catching sharks was quite common, then we went through dry years where hardly any were caught and when they were, they were small in the 20 to 40 lb. class.  Thing have changed and they have made a comeback with multiple shark catches common right now and of different varieties.  For instance on May 30th Yahoo had an outstanding day for the Bryan family from Mississippi, releasing two striped marlin two thresher sharks over 100 lbs. and one pilot shark around 80 lbs.  D.J Novotney also released two thresher sharks around 120 lbs. plus a striped marlin aboard C Rod and Valerie released three pilot sharks between 70 and 80 lbs. as well as landing our only tuna of the week for David McBride and party from Louisiana. Our only wahoo of the week was a 40 lb’er caught aboard  Bill Collector by Mark Chiavetta.  The pangas we sent out caught jack crevalle, grouper, triggerfish, sheephead and bonitas.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report May 23 - 28, 2015

BILLFISH:  A superb week in Cabo with superb catches throughout the week.  The good old days are back!  Striped marlin were thick and a few sailfish and blue marlin were in the mix too.  The Papazyam family from Los Angeles had one of the best catches of the week when they released six striped marlin in one day aboard 28 ft. Adriana at the 11.50 spot, which has been holding impressive numbers of marlin for the past two weeks.  This same day May 24th Valerie released five marlin for another family from Los Angeles – these fish weighed from 100 to 150 lbs.  and were all caught on live bait, also at the 11.50 spot.  On May 26th, Flora T did very well to release six marlin for Robert & Trevor Patel from Atlanta.  A really outstanding day was had by C Rod for Robert & Debbie Adams and friends; they released four striped marlin, a 180 lb. thresher shark, 120 lb. pilot shark both released and a 20 lb. dorado for the table.  Ruthless released five marlin for John & Katie Staples and we had many catches like this as the week went on.  Anglers regularly caught and released between one and five marlin, as well as many sharks.  Attitude Adjustment was our only boat to catch a blue marlin, just under 200 lbs., and this one was caught five miles outside the 11.50.  Pisces Sportfishing anglers caught a total of 154 striped marlin, 1 blue marlin and 2 sailfish; all but two fish were released.

OTHER SPECIES:  A lot of sharks were caught this week and many of a good size in  the 80 to 180 lb. class.  The most abundant was the pilot shark, which we believe is a silky shark – we had twenty two of these this week, as well as three thresher sharks, one bull shark and one mako shark.  Some boats caught as many as three sharks in a day.  It should be noted that all sharks are being released at this time as there is a ban on taking these until July 31st.  Just a smattering of dorado were caught.  Inshore fishing had some slow days, where pangas got skunked but on other days they did well on jack crevalle, grouper and triggerfish.  Roosterfish, wahoo, group and skipjacks were caught in lesser amounts.
